Lian Yuan Rui is studying at the Dan Slave Military Academy in Central City, where she handles secret technique-related tasks in the student council. The captain of the law enforcement force standing before her, Foster Ward, not only also graduated from the Dan Slave Military Academy but serves as the student union president for that prestigious school. Despite having shifted his primary focus to the law enforcement force two years ago, the school authorities continue to trust and heavily rely on him, and have considered no succession until Foster officially graduates.
Lian and Foster, having enrolled in the same year, absorbed into the student council in the same month, and becoming leaders on the same day, share a very close relationship. Whenever the two are together, a harmonious and pleasing scene unfolds, whether in the academy’s student council or in the law enforcement force office.
Sitting behind a desk handling documents, Foster Ward, and Lian Yuan Rui, either reading by the window with the best lighting or quietly standing beside him with a smile while holding a folder, have long been the top scenery in the law enforcement force, above even ’Spence in casual clothes with her twin tails down’.
By any consideration, Foster and Lian should be a model couple. In fact, the subtle and harmonious atmosphere between them indeed deters many admirers, yet after so many years, they have still not developed the kind of romantic relationship others think is just a matter of time. Nevertheless, they are much more intimate than merely ’friends’, causing some impatience among those around them.
However, the two involved seem largely unconcerned by this, whether deliberately or unintentionally. They just interact naturally without minding the intangible boundary between them.
"Maybe I should have explained earlier."
Foster leisurely picked up a ’report’ that Lian had placed beside him, casually swept through it while saying blandly, "That lady you unknowingly saw before is in no way a friend to me. At best, we can only say she’s a ’senior’ in one of my other workplaces."
Lian chuckled and gathered the bag of handmade tea leaves — low in cost yet rich with the thoughtful intention of the cultivator — which members of the law enforcement force and student council receive periodically, and said amusedly, "Did I ask you to explain anything?"
"I just think you should know. That person’s mood is very unstable; though out of some concerns, she wouldn’t lay hands on me as a junior, that may not be the case for others."
Having finished the report, Foster turned to his gentle-natured partner beside him and said seriously, "Unlike me, those people are not easy to deal with."
Lian nodded slightly, then tilted her head and asked, "And? What are you trying to say?"
"I hope you don’t get too deeply involved in this matter, Lian."
Foster rarely looked serious, furrowing his brow as he said, "I’m not trying to hide anything, purely for safety concerns."
Lian nodded with a gentle smile, "I understand."
"Mm."
Foster exhaled softly, revealing a look of relief.
Clearly, in his view, though Lian’s abilities are indeed impressive, and her background is something a ’common student’ like him could never match, character-wise, she’s better suited to every day spent in leisurely elegance within the Ivory Tower than dealing with noisy trivialities.
Despite Academy City lacking any actual Ivory Tower, and her family adopting a laissez-faire approach to the ever-adored girl since childhood, Foster incidentally created a comfortable enough ambiance in the Dan Slave Military Academy’s student council and law enforcement force.
He didn’t deliberately do anything for her.
She never asked him to do anything.
And this subtle and harmonious relationship...
"Will eventually come to an end one day."
Suddenly, Lian turned her head away and muttered abruptly.
Foster raised an eyebrow, with a flash of surprise in his eyes: "What?"
"Life here."
Gazing at the night sky outside the window, the elegant and peaceful Lian softly said, "At the academy or the law enforcement force, these fulfilling, joyful days will have their end, Foster. We are in sixth grade now, just a year away from graduation."
Foster Ward nodded, "Exactly, to be precise, less than a year."
"If I remember correctly, you’ve been planning for post-graduation since two years ago."
Lian smiled as she paced to the window, looking down at the lights, slogans, greenery in the law enforcement force courtyard, and the peeking Spence at the duty room. She spoke gently: "A bright and brilliant future awaits you; I have no doubt Foster Ward will one day gain fame."
Foster touched his nose and cleared his throat lightly, "Are you implying I am somewhat less than discreet?"
"No."
Lian shook her head and sighed softly, "I’m just a little worried whether, in planning your future, you left a space for those who once surrounded you."
Foster’s gaze slightly sharpened.
"Some people may not mind, like Spence from the law enforcement force, or Ji Liang from the student council, but others quite enjoy the comfort circle around you, Foster Ward."
