Secretively sneaking everyone over to the classroom door, Ji Xiaoge whispered as she peeked over the door’s edge, "Sure enough, I can’t understand a thing. I thought Dabus at this academy would teach something like force, electricity, sound, light, or heat."
"Perhaps the classrooms booked by Dabus might talk about that, but such knowledge is definitely non-mainstream here. If you want to listen, we can try our luck at the main building later."
Standing with his ear to the door listening to the old gentleman inside giving a lecture, Motan shrugged and said, "You could probably understand what Dabus is teaching."
"No! I managed to rid myself of those things with great difficulty, I don’t want to recall them!"
Ji Xiaoge pouted and murmured, "Besides, didn’t we say before that we should try not to go while Dabus is giving a lecture, in case Anthony sees us..."
Jadka chuckled and chimed in, "That child would probably come running over, shouting ’Sister Yege’ while waving his arms and legs."
"Wang misses Wang Dony!"
Ya Ya instantly crowed with delight, but after Motan gestured for silence, she obediently drooped her ears and whispered softly, "I do miss him!"
Motan tousled Ya Ya’s silver hair and smiled as he asked, "Shall we continue wandering?"
"Ooh, Wang wants to nap a bit."
Ya Ya said, crouching beside Motan, deftly curling her tail around his ankle, hanging her little head as she mumbled, "Mo Wang seems to like listening to this, so Mo Wang will listen for a bit and then sleep for a bit, wang ooh... Zzzz..."
And with a surprisingly fast speed, she clutched Motan’s leg and fell into a light nap.
"That’s some quality sleep!"
Ji Xiaoge remarked enviously, then leaned closer to Ya Ya and used her wings to shield her, asking Motan without lifting her head, "So, you really enjoy listening to this?"
Motan chuckled and, instead of answering directly, said, "Whenever I receive our textbooks, I always first read through the language and history."
"Hehe, I usually doodle in the books."
Ji Xiaoge stuck out her tongue and crouched beside Ya Ya, gently shifting her weight from Motan’s right leg to her own shoulder, smiling as she said, "But since you’re quite interested, let’s listen at the door for a while."
Genuinely interested in the class being taught inside, Motan touched his nose and then looked inquisitively at Jadka.
"I’m fine with it."
The Old Mage stroked his beard, looking quite enviously as he peered into the classroom at the students busy scribbling notes, "Honestly, compared to our Diesel Family’s ’hands-on teaching’ model, this is way better."
Ji Xiaoge blinked, curiously asking, "What’s ’hands-on teaching’?"
"Scolding while hitting."
"..."
Meanwhile, the senior lecturer at the podium continued speaking eloquently—
"Many people know that Glittering City was once the most steadfast vassal of the Sun Dynasty, and only declared independence after the latter’s total collapse under seemingly peaceful abdication."
The old man raised an eyebrow, curling his lips into a mocking grin as he lightly slapped the ’textbook’ in front of him, "But in reality, like most bloodless wars, the so-called ’abdication’ was merely a flashy excuse. Alphonse’s domination of Glittering City wasn’t as simple as it sounds."
Hundreds of students taking this elective nodded uniformly, their expressions as earnest as they could be.
However, the old man didn’t seem entirely convinced by their ’earnestness’, only pausing for about two seconds before he lightly said, "Why are you looking at me? Take notes, this is all important—it’ll be on the exam."
And so, amidst a chorus of despair, the students drooped their heads and prepared to take vigorous notes.
"Kana Joe, I suppose many might be unfamiliar with this name. She was the last City Lord before Glittering City was completely dominated by the Alphonse surname, and also Baghdad Alphonse’s knight apprentice."
The old professor smacked his lips, laughing lightly, "After conducting some not particularly rigorous investigations, I personally think poor Kana was in love with her childhood friend, who was also her family’s mentor’s son, Lems Alphonse. Unfortunately, the latter wasn’t planning on changing his surname for her."
The students exchanged gossip-filled glances while scribbling diligently on the parchment in front of them, serious as ever.
In fact, if not driven to a dead end by the end-of-term comprehensive assessment, this elective course taught by Isaac Comprehensive College’s chief professor, Rabinsky Cliff, each punctuation mark could become a test point.
To be honest, Professor Cliff is an excellent educator. He’s witty, humorous, clear-minded, and quite charismatic. Although he’s a bit portly, he’s still a charismatic old gentleman, akin to the charming elder Jadka—we should expect that few would dislike his class...
But!
But!!
Rabinsky Cliff, however, has one big flaw: he especially—especially! He especially loves to digress!
For example, a class content about ’species transition in the Spirit Monster Wilderness over the past four hundred years’ might very well start with ’an anecdote about a Centaur Tribe by the Jin Hui River’ and end with ’three centuries ago intelligence warfare between the Cloud Traveler Inn and Thief Guild’. Knowledge about Spirit Monster Wilderness might only occupy ’3%-5%’ of the class, and yet... will all be tested.
That’s not the scary part—since as long as everyone pays attention to the keywords, most of the time, they can respond at the time when Professor Cliff switches to the main topic, and can either listen to or jot down everything related.
However, listening only to the important bits while slacking off at other times simply won’t work!
Because Professor Cliff also has a knack for digressing and yet he remembers exactly what he ’digressed to’, and ’where he digressed to’, then turns all of this content he indeed lectured on... into test points.
This is the frightening bit!
Since in most cases, even if everyone doesn’t listen closely during regular classes, they can conduct targeted reviews based on the semester (or academic year’s) learning tasks during pre-test cramming, so even if the exam doesn’t go too well, it usually won’t turn out disastrous if you seriously cram.
However, Cliff’s elective is supposed to have ’learning tasks’, in most cases... these things are worthless.
Hence everyone can only choose to listen attentively to the entire class voluntarily, hardly needing any reminders.
By the way, today’s class was supposed to be discussing the history of elven craftsmanship development. Heaven knows how the old gentleman veered onto Glittering City’s power shift history.
"After Kana passed away under suspicious circumstances the year after she got engaged to Lems Alphonse, and half a month before her untimely demise, the only person Lems feared, his loyal father Baghdad Alphonse also died of illness."
Professor Cliff mockingly laughed, spreading his hands as he said, "Honestly, we can hardly believe there’s no connection between these two events."
Though he didn’t clarify things, those who understand, understand—and those who don’t... probably will after the test.
"Let’s imagine the situation back then."
Cliff clapped his hands emphatically, saying in a deep voice, "Old knight Baghdad and current City Lord Kana Joe passed away successively within a short period; the old City Lord Sang Qiao, who had lost his legs and even lacked sight capability, was forced back to his position, meanwhile most of Glittering City’s affairs were held by the shrewd young man, Lems Alphonse, and all this..."
"All this?"
A student with high emotional intelligence, eager to cooperate, cheekily asked after Cliff’s cliffhanger.
"Will be organized, analyzed, hypothesized, and summarized into an essay no less than two thousand words, submitted by the day after tomorrow."
