Four Split Personalities

Yi Dong is Motan’s best friend, bar none. Although the latter loves to mess with his buddy A, creating far more trouble for him than solving it, no one would ever question the friendship between the two. In fact, if they weren’t both normally oriented males, all the romantic subplot in this story could probably be cut out.

Fortunately, they are both men and both are heterosexual.

Yi Dong understands every personality of Motan, even...yes, he even vaguely sensed a side that drifted outside the three regular mental states of his friend. But they were too young at that time, and when they met again, Motan only displayed three kinds.

As Motan’s best friend, he always does his utmost to provide help, and even though they hardly exchanged money due to the latter’s insistence, everyone would agree the two were practically joined at the hip growing up.

Of course, that’s nonsense, since Yi Dong is taller than Motan; they couldn’t possibly wear the same pants.

In short, whether in the past, present, or future, if there’s only one person who Motan could trust unconditionally, it would be Yi Dong. Leave aside jokes, banter, and teasing, there have never been real lies between them, not even well-intentioned ones.

Up until now, if anything would make the ’Chaotic Neutral’ Motan abandon his fun, make the ’Orderly Good’ Motan commit a crime without hesitation, or make the ’Absolute Neutral’ Motan willingly stand in the spotlight, that person would most likely be Yi Dong.

Similarly, to protect Motan’s personal safety, Yi Dong would do anything heterodox. If necessary, he would even go against his parents.

"At worst, we just go on the run together."

Anytime the topic of ’mental illness exposure’ comes up (Motan often being in his ’Absolute Neutral’ state), Yi Dong would impatiently say to Motan, "Even though I’m not as capable as you, bro, I’m still on the elite track, so I wouldn’t starve or drag you down."

And whenever Motan suggests he would run away without involving Yi Dong, wishing the latter would just live a normal life (often in his ’Orderly Good’ state), Yi Dong would impatiently interrupt him, saying this is not a ’topic open for discussion’.

Clearly, buddy A’s attitude is very firm.

Countless times, when "Gu Yan Yue" jokingly asks their son if he had to choose between ’Motan’ and ’parents’, Yi Dong would answer without hesitation, "Don’t kid around. I’ve known him way longer than I’ve known you two."

Even though it’s just a joke, even Yi Dong’s cool dad has said, "As long as you two don’t develop anything beyond friendship, of course we support you being lifelong friends," which has a slightly teasing nature, but Motan can still sense the helplessness and bitterness from both elders at those moments.

To be honest, this isn’t Yi Dong’s fault.

Because unlike Motan, he’s not an orphan. He has loving parents, a well-off family, and all the enviable things of most peers. Yet he spent the early years of his life, the most critical years for a child, in an orphanage with Motan. For a relatively mature person, those were the years when one’s worldview was formed.

He had no reason to be sent to such a place, even though that orphanage wasn’t bad at all. It could even be considered a model within the industry. The staff were all very kind, and there were no ’abuse’ scenarios, but he still had no reason to be sent there.

Sometimes, Motan feels very grateful, because if Yi Dong hadn’t been sent to the orphanage, as a ’special person’, he might really have only been ’one’ special person. Though he would likely still grow up smoothly, the existence of a close friend truly makes him feel more ’human’.

But he also can’t help feeling indignant for Yi Dong, because all of this is so unjustifiable.

Perhaps if Yi Dong hadn’t gone to the orphanage, he would have become a spoiled rich kid, or a badly behaved aristocrat, but that possibility is very slim. Look at Kanglan, Wanyang, and Cui Xiaoyu; they’re in the same social class (second-generation wealthy, and Cui Xiaoyu’s father and grandfather frequently trading erotic materials purely out of interest), yet they maintain high standards. Though young people in modern society might not have perfectly righteous views, these individuals have impeccable character.

In short, Motan cannot understand, regardless of which personality he’s in.

He can’t deceive himself into believing Yi Dong’s parents dislike the child, even if that’s what he initially thought. True, Yi Dong was a bit ugly as a child (perhaps due to some genes from the Gu Family), but after getting to know Yi Nan and "Gu Yan Yue," Motan can almost be sure that this couple loves their son dearly, just like most parents do.
