Four Split Personalities

Chapter 2667 - 1262: Leisure Time in the Preparation Area (2)

As soon as those words came out, the shy and introverted Yu Chen should’ve instantly panicked, gone bright red, and become way too flustered to use Yizou to tease Motan anymore... or at least, that’s how it was supposed to go.

At least, in Motan’s calculations, that’s how it was supposed to go.

The result—

"Nngh!"

The girl did blush a little, but she didn’t completely lose her cool like Motan had imagined. Instead, she wrinkled her nose and mumbled under her breath, "Liar!"

Motan was dumbfounded on the spot.

Liar?

Lie about what?

How am I lying now?

"Mhm~"

As if she’d seen right through his thoughts, Yu Chen let out a little hum, pursed her lips, and said softly, "If I remember correctly, on February nineteenth you already spent time on the same bed with a girl who wasn’t me."

Motan: (O_O)?

Yu Chen shot him a glance and asked lazily, "Need a hint?"

Motan nodded like crazy, desperate to prove his innocence.

"Misha County, Doe Hill, the mobile Alchemy Workshop."

Yu Chen tiptoed closer and murmured into Motan’s ear.

In an instant, a scene shot up from the depths of Motan’s memory.

The viewpoint was first-person. The main subject was a girl—described in more detail, a petite girl in a Silver-Gray Old Robe, with pale golden hair, named Luna Lynch—dozing lightly with her hefty Alchemy Notes clutched in her arms, just inches away from the owner of that view.

"Luna!"

Motan let out a short exclamation, turned bitterly toward the now smug-looking Yu Chen.

"What?"

A dreamy, ethereal voice sounded behind him.

"I didn’t do it on purpose!"

Motan clenched his fists, flailing his arms as he tried to explain to Yu Chen, "You know I didn’t do it on purpose!"

"Didn’t do what on purpose?"

The ethereal voice seemed to have moved closer.

"Didn’t sleep with her on purpose!"

Motan glared at Yu Chen in exasperation, just hoping she’d stop playing dumb and teasing him.

Then, about a tenth of a second later, Motan suddenly snapped back to himself, spun around on the spot, and stared in disbelief at the girl who had somehow appeared behind him without him noticing, blurting, "Luna!"

"What?"

The girl named Luna Lynch rubbed her eyes sleepily and stifled a tiny yawn, drawling in that uniquely languid tone of hers, "I never said you slept with me on purpose..."

"Uh!"

Motan mimicked her and rubbed his own eyes, and one second later arrived at the conclusion that "No, I’m not hallucinating, the person we were just talking about a few seconds ago is actually here now!"

Sure enough—on the very first day of the official Warfire League, in the competitors’ prep area, apprentice alchemist Luna Lynch, clutching her massive Alchemy Notes as usual, belt clinking with bottles and jars, had inexplicably appeared in front of Motan and Yu Chen, the corners of her lips curved in the faintest of smiles.

"Luna, you’re here!"

As if she’d known Luna would show up, Yu Chen ignored Motan, quickly ran over to the swaying Luna with the big book in her arms, and happily wrapped her arm around Luna’s. "Why didn’t I see you just now?"

"I was lying over there reading."

Luna pointed at the row of seats toward the back not far away (two young contestants there had been sneaking glances over), then slowly turned her head to look at Motan and said seriously, "I never said you slept with me on pur—"

"Stop!"

Motan immediately and forcefully cut Luna off, giving a sheepish laugh as he changed the subject, "So, uh, Luna, you..."

"About the bug—still no real findings."

Luna didn’t wait for him to finish and jumped in first. "I did a very thorough study on the remains you gave me. Mm... maybe a little too thorough. But even though I’ve completely figured out its components and construction—if necessary I could even make an identical one—I still couldn’t pin down its origin or trace it back to its user. Sorry... they covered their tracks very carefully."

On the face that was half-asleep most of the time, a rare hint of apology appeared.

"No, that’s not what I was going to ask."

Motan gently shook his head and looked at her smooth, fair forehead. "The injury on your head—is it okay now?"

"Injury!?"

Yu Chen froze, then turned to Luna in alarm. "You got hurt? When! Where? How bad is it?"

She truly lived up to the phrase "Kind Heart of a Doctor." Her intense reaction was exactly what Motan had expected. In fact, that had been one of his goals. After all, his level in Healing Divine Technique and in proper medical knowledge was completely amateur, nowhere near Yu Chen’s. So as long as he "accidentally" let it slip that Luna had been injured, then no matter how stubborn the latter was, she’d still end up being thoroughly examined.

Motan still remembered how at their last meeting in the Alchemist Guild, Luna had kicked him out using that bizarre line, "I plan to take your advice, wash up and then get some sleep. Wanna join?" But that sort of tactic did not work on Yu Chen.

Sure enough, under Yu Chen’s rapid-fire barrage of questions, Luna started to become overwhelmed. She didn’t even get a chance to shoot Motan a reproachful look before Yu Chen grabbed her small hand and ran her through Eye of Dawn and a string of other Divine Arts, checking her from head to toe. Judging from the looks of it, she wasn’t getting away anytime soon...

Motan chuckled, stopped watching Yu Chen grilling Luna about how she’d gotten hurt, and walked away from the two girls with a light step, randomly finding a spot to sit down.

Luna Lynch had always had a habit of pushing herself too hard. To put it less nicely, she didn’t seem to treat herself like a person at all. Her daily habits were a complete mess, and she tended to view herself from the bizarre angle of "as long as I’m not dead, I’m healthy."

This bad habit had always been a huge headache for both Motan and Yu Chen. After all, Luna wasn’t a Player. As an NPC, she only had one life—once it was gone, it was gone.

And given her downright chaotic lifestyle (including but not limited to: forgetting breakfast/lunch/dinner, regularly staying awake for forty-plus hours, reading while walking without looking at the road, and having at least five explosions out of every ten experiments), both of them pessimistically figured she was a lot more likely than others to lose that life.

For various reasons, Motan usually couldn’t do much about Luna, while the gentle Yu Chen could often persuade her into doing things she didn’t want to do—like going to bed or eating an extra half-bowl of rice.

So Motan, who had always worried about Luna’s health and had grown even more concerned after learning she’d been injured, had deliberately said what he did earlier.

[I really am a genius~]

Having solved two problems in one go (Yu Chen’s teasing / Luna’s health), Motan closed his eyes and thought contentedly.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?"

He didn’t even get to enjoy five seconds of peace before a somewhat familiar voice rang out beside him.

Motan looked up in puzzlement and saw a handsome young Fox Tribe Half-beast standing in front of the chair next to him.

"Oh, Batty."

Motan blurted it out on reflex.

The Holy Spear Knight Academy ace student, who had recently lost by a hair to the Diser Delegation in the team finals of the dueling tournament, Batty Arthur, froze on the spot. "You know me?"

"Ah, no, it’s just that I was there to watch the tournament finals that day. You performed really well."

Motan reacted quickly and covered for himself, nodding. "No one’s sitting next to me."

"Thanks, thanks."

Batty thanked him repeatedly, then turned his gaze toward Yu Chen and Luna not far away, saying over his shoulder without looking back, "The view’s great from here~"

Motan’s expression stiffened.

"By the way, friend, you’re a contestant too, right?"

"Mm, you could say that."

"Tsk tsk, I haven’t seen you before. Judging from your clothes... Church of the Dawn?"

"Yeah, Church of the Dawn."

"Which academy are you from? Radiance? Then do you know a student named Richard Ryan? He’s Church of the Dawn too, and he seems pretty strong."

"I don’t study here, but I do know that student Richard Ryan."

"Haha, really? Then you—"

"I’m Hei Fan from the Holy Church Union delegation. Not long ago, because that Richard tried to harass my girlfriend—yeah, the black-haired girl you were just staring at nonstop—I had someone beat him half to death."

"Uh..."

"Oh right, Batty, what was that you said about the view being great?"

"Bro! Misunderstanding! Total misunderstanding!!!"
