Motan had to admit, he made a terrible start.
Despite even Lei Er Si, known for her sharp words, expressing amazement after realizing the concept of ’uninterrupted forced march,’ and the subsequent tactical changes of the three army groups on the blue side not offering any opportunity to the opponent, it still didn’t change the fact that Motan’s initial strong assault was far from ideal.
Not many people could realize this, at least not the young talents from Academy City, such as La Ersi, Lei Er Si, Batty, Richard, who didn’t sense anything amiss. Quite the opposite, compared to the flawless defense of ’Foster Ward,’ they were more impressed by the Black Vatican Priest’s initial stunning assault and the subsequent series of adaptive tactics.
Full of speed and passion, especially the boldness exhibited when directly colliding back without a scratch after deep infiltration into enemy territory, was truly exhilarating.
But in reality, Motan suffered considerable losses in this initial engagement.
No need to beat around the bush. We all know he mistook the opposing ’Foster Ward’ as Foster Ward, but that ’Foster Ward’ was actually Theresa Tarosa, who had swept to victory in the last Warfire League tournament with overwhelming power.
Putting aside achievements and abilities in other domains, at least in the field of war simulations, no matter how excellent Red Heart K might be, he’s not comparable to the Witch replacing him today.
If Motan was merely an unfamiliar ’Hei Fan’ to Foster, it would have been fine. Given his personality, he would have taken serious precautions, knowing the opponent was a top-seeded player, and wouldn’t have played so aggressively.
But the problem was that he had another alias in this game called ’Tan Mo,’ which made him quite familiar with Foster in a certain sense.
Even without interaction or practice in this regard, Motan still had a good grasp of Foster’s level; in his view, Foster was only at the level of someone like Batty Arthur in this domain, with almost no further potential to tap, and posed no threat to him.
So he confidently executed a rather flamboyant opening move, just as he had claimed before, to show off a bit.
And as a result... he showed off a bit too much.
Simply put, he underestimated the opponent.
This might not have happened with someone as earnest as Teresa, who, in his ’Orderly Good’ persona, always respects opponents no matter the circumstances. Nor would the ’Chaotic Neutral’ persona, who tends to act according to his own rhythm, seldom considering others’ feelings, make this mistake. But as it stands, Motan, currently in his ’Absolute Neutrality’ persona, did underestimate the opponent.
Unlike in Misha County or Sumer, Motan sitting in the simulation command room wasn’t responsible for any lives. Whether victory or defeat, no one would be harmed due to his actions. In such circumstances, unencumbered, he became complacent.
This subtle psychological difference might not even be noticed by himself, but objectively speaking, he indeed became complacent, underestimated the opponent, and grew cocky.
It’s not really a fault, just a common mistake made by most people, and Motan under his current persona just happened to be one of the majority.
And then Motan found himself in an awkward situation.
It’s like a graduate student being thrust back to the sixth grade after being hit by a truck, thinking the math test the next day would be a breeze, only to find... oh no, it’s advanced calculus!
It’s not that he doesn’t know how, but being completely unprepared, his state would definitely be affected, especially when first seeing the test paper.
In such a case, a test he could originally score 95 on might barely pass.
On the other hand, over at Teresa’s side, knowing from the start that the ’Black Vatican Priest’ was formidable, this girl had not only prepared thoroughly but even crammed all night before the exam (practiced against Foster in simulated exercises), ensuring her state was exceptional.
Therefore, when the purpose of this test isn’t just to ’pass,’ but to achieve a higher score than the opponent, the likelihood of Motan messing up becomes significantly high.
Despite both being highly skilled players, one ready for battle, the other thinking ’I must show off a bit,’ the result was obvious.
After having his overly aggressive first move intercepted, Motan’s tempo fell behind.
It’s like two ultimate masters standing on a snowy peak, ready to engage in an exhilarating duel, where the one who can’t resist attacking first is actually more passive.
If his strikes would hurt the opponent, that’s fair, but if the initial move lands without effect, it’s easily entrapped into the opponent’s rhythm, pressed from start to finish! Pressed to death!
From a God’s Eye View, without any sense of ’disconnection’—
"Foster didn’t give Hei Fan any opportunity for a breakthrough, instead pressed forward subtly, forcing the latter to retreat. Not only that, taking it easy, he didn’t even sacrifice his two mobile units, gaining a significant psychological advantage and, more importantly, holding the rhythm in his hands."
Ramollok, while lazily polishing his monocle, chuckled as he spoke to Jiawen sitting beside him, "The red team directly mobilized twice the army strength to press forward directly, while narrowing the blue team’s solitary unit’s operating space and unhurriedly nibbling away at the neutral territory between both camps, leaving the blue team with a bad and a worse choice."
