A stack of instruction cards had taken the place of her folding fan, sometimes lightly covering Teresa’s mouth, sometimes stirring a gentle breeze.
Ever since the moment she became sensible, this girl named Theresa Tarosa had not been this excited for a very, very long time.
She was without question a genius. Even if she was a bit clumsy in daily life, capable of tripping and falling flat on level ground, even if she had no Talents whatsoever in combat and her Physical Fitness was not even as good as a Common young adult outside the game, she was still a genius.
Geniuses are Lonely; this has nothing to do with their own personalities, but with how hard it is for them to find people who are both like‑minded and of a similar level, with those same Traits.
Even though in everyday life a severely unbalanced genius like Teresa could still get along famously with her friends, living every day boisterously and happily, that did not mean she was not "lonely."
The reason she had recently been touching professional Knowledge like military analysis and simulated engagements less and less was not that Teresa had lost interest in these things, but that within the range of her vision there was no one left who could stand shoulder to shoulder with her.
Of course, Richard and Andre, who treated Teresa like their own daughter, undoubtedly qualified—but as a girl in the bloom of youth, even though she was very fond of these two elders, she still did not want to pester them every single day to accompany her in "playing."
On the one hand, there was a generation gap between them, and Teresa was now at the age of rebellion.
On the other hand, the keenly intelligent girl could vaguely sense that whether it was Richard or Andre, they held rather complicated feelings toward her Talents—put bluntly, perhaps it was equal parts gratification and worry, with even a faint trace of fear.
So she began consciously distancing herself from this entertainment she loved most, the pastime that had once opened her heart, hiding away the side of herself that made her out of place with everyone else, and doing her best to be a Common girl.
During this period she had been thinking all the time about whether she should just slowly grow up, graduate, then pull some strings to become an intern teacher at the Dan Slave Military Academy, spending every day in this uncontentious City in an easy, relaxed way, remaining at her post after everyone in their little circle had gone their separate ways.
On ordinary days she would be Lecturer Teresa, Professor Teresa, Director Teresa, Dean Teresa?
And when everyone managed to find the time to come back and visit, she would still be that youngest, most sensible, most clumsy little sister.
When the two "fathers" who had no children of their own grew old, she would take over the work in their hands and be filial to them as though she were their own daughter... no, even more devoted than a real daughter.
She would have one or several romances, sweet with a tinge of sourness, then marry and have children, and eventually become a respected old lady.
Perhaps every once in a while she could also write a few papers and publish them in those popular journals.
She would not deliberately bury her Talents as though she had never possessed them, but would only display them in her work, staying far away from the storms and clamor that those who cared for her did not want her to be exposed to.
This somewhat prematurely mature girl had thought about many, many things.
She knew very well that if you wanted to gain something, you had to set something down.
War is like a game of chess; life is like a game of chess as well. So Teresa, who had been very good at fighting Wars since childhood, could also see through life far more clearly than most of her peers.
Not worrying the elders who cared for her actually occupied only a very small part of her motivation.
At root, Teresa just wanted to make her own life a bit more comfortable, a bit more relaxed, a bit happier.
If she could live out her entire life as described above, she would surely be very happy.
This was the answer the girl arrived at after thinking day and night for who knows how long.
But this answer had begun to waver over the past two days, after she watched the matches of that Chief Priest Ramollok from the Dream Teaching Country.
And that wavering was torn to shreds after she flipped through the battle records of that Black Vatican Priest in the opposing command room.
Teresa was suddenly shocked to realize that although she stood in a high place, she was not alone.
Or to put it another way: when enough people are lonely, one is no longer lonely.
Beside the mountain peak where she had once stood in solitude, two more figures suddenly appeared.
One of them wore a windbreaker whose original color could no longer be seen, having been dyed a blood‑red by countless stains. He was tall and slender; that delicate, androgynous face of his was wreathed in a smile, as warm as a spring breeze.
The man named Ramollok sat there at his ease, narrowing those long, beautiful phoenix eyes, gently caressing the bone throne beneath him—cast from countless filth like corpses, Abominations, resentment, and blood—as he sipped that sweet despair and listened to those melodious wails.
Without a doubt, he was the type she hated most. If she could, she really wanted to slap that handsome face hard and smash to pieces that nauseating bone seat beneath him.
But even so, this man’s existence still proclaimed that she was not alone.
And the other person...
He was a young man who did not look remarkable at all, wearing an equally unremarkable Priest’s Robe, never fixed in a single scene.
At the first blink, he was strolling along a bustling street, soon swallowed up by the crowd.
At the second blink, he was sitting in a solemn, austere city hall, his stiff face tense and uneasy.
At the third blink, he was clumsily lighting the oil lamp at the corner of the table, curled up in his chair, scratching his head furiously.
