"So you're really just going through the motions, not even pretending, huh?"
Ansheng's forehead was covered in black lines as he accepted Li Wenkang's cola and looked back at him.
Li Wenkang had brought some cigarettes and liquor as a formality, but the real gift for Ansheng was a chilled bottle of cola inside.
"Isn't it almost Lunar New Year? Just getting into the spirit..." Li Wenkang handed another bottle of cola to Ah Qing, and after secretly glancing at Little Angel, he chuckled and said.
"Let's talk more at the bureau! There are some things I need to discuss with you later."
Joking with Master Fuli, Li Wenkang casually tossed the gift box to Ah Qing, turned around, and led Master Fuli and Ah Qing into the Security Bureau office.
The office of the Xia East Security Bureau isn't like the office complexes of Chang'an City.
This office is just for administrative work and also a temporary detention and interrogation area.
Li Wenkang had things to discuss with Master Fuli, but it was clear they weren't urgent. He simply led them through the inquiry corridor.
"Hmm? That thing looks a bit familiar..."
As they walked past the inquiry room corridor, Ansheng's peripheral vision unknowingly caught sight of something familiar, and he immediately patted Little Angel's head, prompting her to reverse course.
Little Angel took two steps back in three quick strides and eventually stopped in front of a one-way observation window.
In the roughly ten-square-meter room, it was empty except for a large floor-to-ceiling fish tank and several heating lamps, sitting quietly in the inquiry room.
A light blue jellyfish and a pink jellyfish floated in the tank, conversing at its edge.
"Isn't that Jellyfish Lady from Chang'an?" Ansheng, with a surprised expression, glanced around the room and said.
"One couldn't pay the ransom, and the other came for a visit, so they both ended up here."
Li Wenkang shrugged as he looked into the room and said.
The pink jellyfish was clearly Triss, a knight whose ancestors were once the richest in the world.
Master Fuli had conveniently brought her back from Furui City to the Imperial Capital, intending to pressure her family for gold coins.
However, their family couldn't come up with bail money, so she had to be temporarily detained.
Triss and Feina both had jellyfish, and both belonged to the local royal camp, so they were naturally familiar.
When Feina heard about Triss's arrest, she chivalrously went to the detention center to share her hard days with her friend.
"Weren't her ancestors the richest in the world?" Ansheng quipped with a face full of black lines.
"It's old news from the Victorian Era. Their family wasn't invited to the Longevity Club, so they're either poor or have very decentralized family power, lacking a decisive leader,"
Li Wenkang explained to Master Fuli, then laughed and continued, "If you're interested in pressuring for gold, I actually have some related research papers."
"One sure thing after another, yet they have to reluctantly accept it all."
"You're the man, Old Li!" Master Fuli did not hold back on praise, giving a thumbs up.
Among the group, only Little Angel was full of black lines, even feeling the urge to report these actions.
A large-scale, systematic ransom industry chain—isn't this persecuting us, the local gentry?
Walking together with Old Li, Ansheng's demeanor unconsciously became more arrogant, and even Ah Qing unknowingly adopted a loiterer's gait.
"Wasn't I just handing over work to a colleague? How did I end up in the inquiry room?"
Arriving at the inquiry room where the Corgi was detained, a Forest Ranger, looking puzzled, pushed open the inquiry room door with paper and pen and came out.
But as soon as he stepped out, he froze, staring bewilderedly at his colleagues filling the corridor seat.
"Huh? Why haven't you guys handed over yet? What are you doing squatting at the inquiry room door?"
"What we're doing? Charging the electric baton!" Field colleagues each quipped, and three to five people teamed up to lift the colleague who stepped out, sticking electrode patches on his cheeks, running them at full power.
"Damn! I remember now, I was just taking a statement from the Corgi; stop it, it's already burned!"
The electrocuted Forest Ranger's eyes widened, his body shuddered, and he gritted his teeth, shouting:
"I've had enough of this ridiculous shift. I'd rather be out on duty confronting Spirit Beasts than take statements here."
Within an hour of starting his shift handover, he'd already had the full-powered electrotherapy three times to jolt his memory back.
He got shocked so much, he learned to tap dance on his own.
"Is that thing really so troublesome?" Ansheng asked, watching the scene in the corridor with a puzzled expression.
"Not really troublesome. The only difficulty might be the language barrier." Li Wenkang said to Master Fuli.
The Corgi's abilities are quite peculiar and clearly belong to the path of the Second Epoch.
It can use its confusion traits to beguile surrounding creatures and influence some memories.
But these effects are not permanent as long as one stays away from the Corgi and gets a bit of stimulation, the enchantment cast by the Corgi can be broken.
The Spirit Beast Gang and the Security Bureau surrounded it and caught it without much effort.
However, they were stuck with the process now.
Within the Xia East Security Bureau, there are only a few Forest Rangers who are proficient in canine languages.
They took turns entering to take statements, but the Corgi resisted the organization's interrogation tooth and nail.
As soon as people left, it would employ confusion methods to trick the Forest Rangers outside the inquiry room.
"It's so arrogant, do I need to teach it a lesson?"
After listening to Li Wenkang and the staff's accounts, Ansheng was nearly amused with anger, standing straight up on Little Angel's shoulders, rolling up his sleeves, prepared to enter the room and give the Corgi's little pert behind a good kicking.
You, a Corgi, have no respect for me, so I guess you're not from the same world as me. You don't even respect Brother Fuli.
You, Doggy, don't even give face to Ah Bai; do you really take our Spirit Beast Gang as mere decoration?
"Why don't I give it a try..."
Seeing the little fox furiously lifting up a corridor's stainless steel bench to challenge the other side, Ah Qing crouched down, hugged the little fox's waist, saying:
"If you hit it with that, it could be fatal to the dog! I'm actually quite good with negotiation and communication..."
"You wait at the door for five seconds first." Ansheng lifted a paw to Ah Qing's face, opened the inquiry room door, and barged in.
"Awoo! Woo woo—"
"Whee!"
Amidst the noisy sounds, after a moment, Master Fuli pushed open the inquiry room door.
"Ah Qing, the other side is behaving well now, go in and take a statement."
The Forest Ranger at the door and the fieldwork team members all looked at Master Fuli coming out with strange expressions, then turned to look inside the room where a Corgi stood with a lampshade around its neck, spinning in place on the chair.
Master Fuli had gone in, picked up the table lamp, and placed it on the Corgi's head, stunning the Corgi with stars in its eyes.
Then, he lifted it and kicked its behind...
Estimate that now, the Corgi's greatest regret is that its paws are too short to rub its aching bottom.
"Did you even put on the Elizabethan Collar?"
Ah Qing opened the inquiry room door with one hand, looked at the little fox in amazement, giving a thumbs up:
"You really are thorough, little fox! This way it can't even bite me..."
Little Angel: "......"
An Elizabethan Collar isn't metallic; that thing is clearly a lampshade.....
