"You ever heard of Marilyn Star?"
Elven reporter Ava Copperman put a finger to her lip, looking up as if to find the answer written on the ceiling. "Ummm... isn’t that a kind of sandwich?"
Karl Krass, owner, operator, and chief editor of the Morning Wood, chuckled and leaned back in his chair. It was a nice chair.
Heavy and plush, and though it required some extra cushions on account of him being a dwarf, Karl didn’t mind.
He took the cigar from his mouth and blew a cloud of smoke, watching the acrid eddies as if scrying tea leaves in the bottom of a cup. "She’s a singer. Big in the new opera house. All the ladies and lads of New Larrin are besotted with her. Can’t get enough of her. Concerts sold out every night."
Ava snapped her fingers, beaming. "That’s right! I saw her posters all over. But they called her the Queen of Dawn. Is she a queen?"
"Nah," Karl said as he took the cigar between his teeth again. "But you wouldn’t know it by the way they talk. But more to the point, she’s popular with everybody! And word is, she has a hot little lover on the side."
"Good for her," Ava said brightly.
Karl eyed the elf through the smoke.
He liked eying her, to be fair. In her prim blouse that always seemed a size too small, the elf’s plump breasts were teased through undone upper buttons, her pants always delightfully tight around her pert rear.
And of course, her elven beauty, seemingly impossible to fade, was always worth a gander. Immortal. Stunning.
Honey blonde hair and pouty pink lips. Even Karl, whose preferred ladies were of the meatier variety, had to admit she was lovely.
Yes, Karl liked her, and not only because she was pretty, but because she was one of his best reporters.
But elves were very different from humans and dwarves, and even after two years of living in New Larrin, she still hadn’t adjusted to all the cultural norms. Better known as common sense.
"Right," Karl said as he ground his cigar into an ashtray. "But also, no."
"No?" Ava said.
"No. See, Ava, humans don’t like the idea of a hot gal having a side piece. At least, not a girl that they like. A girl like Marilyn is lovely and proper and needs to seem... available."
"Why?"
"So people can dream of getting a chance of bending her over and pounding her proper pussy until she gushes."
"Wow," Ava said. "That does sound fun!"
"Yeah," Karl said as he dug out another cigar, snipping off the tip expertly before lighting it with an embossed lighter. "Exactly. So, if someone were to find out if she does have a side piece, they’d be doing all those fans a service. Get me?"
"Gotcha," Ava said, nodding. Hesitated. "And... that someone is me, right?" Karl pointed his cigar at her, grinning. "Bang on."
Ava jumped to her feet. "Don’t worry boss! I’m on it. I’ll get you that story!" "Atta girl. Best of luck!"
Ava beamed, grabbing her hat off a nearby hook before bouncing out the door, Karl’s eyes glued to the firm outline of her ass until it was gone.
He leaned back in his chair, exhaling another plume of smoke.
Some had thought him mad for hiring an elf right out of the groves; one who had never seen a newspaper before arriving in New Larrin, but Karl had sensed something in the blonde when she leaned over his desk and begged for a chance.
Call it a reporter’s instinct, call it a horny old dwarf getting an eyeful of elf tits, but anyone who had managed to get into his office without an appointment deserved something of a chance.
Karl grinned as he puffed at his cigar, folding his arms behind his head. And he’d been right.
The elf had broken over a dozen headlines. The public loved the lascivious stories she’d brought him, even if Ava never fully understood why people loved them.
She had a naked honesty about things that delighted and disturbed people.
Everyone assumed reporters lied, which was fair enough, but the stories Ava found were so outlandish they had to be true.
Karl chuckled, admiring the framed front pages of the Morning Wood that filled the walls of his office.
Oh yes. Ava had been a prize. And he had a feeling the Queen of the Dawn story was going to be the biggest one yet.
