Rampaging spirits tore through enemy lines, flying spirits dove from the skies with razor-sharp talons, and agile spirits darted between legs, ripping throats with spectral fangs.
What had been a desperate defense moments ago had become a savage counterattack that left the Coalition ranks reeling.
This was precisely one of the reasons the Coalition had gathered such a massive army to crush the measly number of Veynar.
In this world, humans possessed something no other race could claim... the power of spirit manifestation.
It was a unique and terrifying ability that allowed even the weakest human to contend with far more physically powerful races.
When a human warrior gets their spirit, they could call forth a powerful ethereal beast that fought alongside them, multiplying their combat strength several times over.
This gift had allowed humanity to carve out territories and survive in a world filled with monstrous tribes and ancient predators.
Different races utilized essence in vastly different ways. Low-level tribes like the Zerith Stalkers and the Gray Marauders simply absorbed essence directly from the atmosphere, using it to harden their bodies, enhance their strength, and sharpen their senses.
Their power was straightforward, brutal, and heavily reliant on raw physicality and bloodlines.
While the higher levels ones had their own mysterious and powerful ways.
The Zharun, being human themselves, also possessed the potential for spirit manifestation.
However, due to a combination of bloodline dilution, cultural practices, and some other reaons their ability to awaken spirit warriors was significantly weaker than that of the mysterious Veynar.
Their manifested spirits were often incomplete, unstable, or far weaker in presence.
As a result, the Zharun had long relied on a different strategy... attacking surrounding weaker human tribes, absorbing their populations, and rapidly swelling their own numbers through conquest and forced assimilation.
The reason they dared to attack the Veynar now was the result of years of calculated attrition.
The Veynar had lost large numbers of their elite warriors during a series of "natural" beast tides that had mysteriously intensified in recent seasons.
Combined with the efforts of ambitious internal traitors and systematic border skirmishes designed to bleed them dry, the tribe’s fighting strength had been declining faster than it could recover.
This created the perfect opportunity for the surrounding forces to strike, conquer the Veynar, and each claim their share of the tribe’s most closely guarded secrets... including the methods behind their unusually powerful spirit manifestation.
Even so, no single tribe had been confident enough to face the Veynar alone.
Only with the miraculous birth of new Layer 4 powerhouses among their ranks did the Coalition finally decide to band together and launch this all-out assault, hoping to overwhelm the weakened Veynar through sheer numbers and coordinated might.
Yet as the battlefield now clearly showed, even a diminished Veynar tribe remained a terrifying force once their spirits were fully unleashed.
...
Up above, the two fully materialized Layer 3 spirits clashed in mid-air with earth-shaking force.
BOOM!
The Golden Lion lunged upward in a blur of radiant light, its massive glowing jaws snapping shut around the Vulture’s throat with bone-crushing power.
Golden fangs sank deep into ethereal flesh, and a shower of pure, golden essence exploded outward.
The Vulture let out a soul-rending shriek... a sound so sharp and poisonous that nearby warriors clapped their hands over their ears as blood began to trickle from their eardrums.
Its miasma-dripping talons raked furiously across the Lion’s golden mane, tearing deep furrows through the radiant fur and sending waves of poisonous green fire mixed with golden sparks raining down onto the battlefield below like a deadly meteor shower.
The ground shook under the impact of the spiritual duel. Every collision between the two spirits sent shockwaves rippling outward, cracking the already blood-soaked earth and forcing lesser warriors to stagger back in terror.
Below the clashing monsters, Thorne and Thauren moved in absolute, deadly synchronization with their spirits.
Thorne’s blade danced like an elusive venomous snake, striking from impossible angles and leaving trails of acidic green smoke that hissed and sizzled wherever they touched the air.
His movements were fluid, unpredictable, and laced with deadly precision.
Every slash carried the same toxic miasma as his Vulture spirit, forcing Thauren to constantly shift and adapt or risk being poisoned with a single scratch.
Thauren, however, answered with pure, overwhelming force.
He relied on the unyielding, crushing weight of his golden broadsword, swinging it in wide, devastating arcs that carried the same righteous fury as the Golden Lion above.
Each impact of his blade against Thorne’s thinner sword sent out booming shockwaves of golden light.
He drove Thorne back step by step, his face set in a mask of pure, unrelenting wrath.
CLANG! CLANG! BANG!
Bone met bone in a furious exchange.
Thorne twisted like a serpent, narrowly avoiding a downward cleave that would have split him from shoulder to hip, then retaliated with a lightning-fast thrust aimed at Thauren’s throat.
Thauren parried with the flat of his broadsword and answered with a brutal knee strike that slammed into Thorne’s ribs, forcing the traitor to cough up a mouthful of blood.
Above them, the Golden Lion finally tore free of the Vulture’s grip and roared... a sound like a golden sun exploding. It charged again, slamming its massive body into the poisonous bird and sending both spirits tumbling through the air in a chaotic tangle of claws, feathers, and radiant light.
Thorne’s eyes flashed with malice.
He suddenly dropped low, sweeping his blade in a wide horizontal arc that released a wave of green acidic mist.
Thauren raised his broadsword and slammed it into the ground, creating a golden barrier of pure essence that deflected the toxic cloud.
The mist hissed and boiled against the golden light, filling the air with the acrid stench of corroding energy.
"Despite having a Vulture Spirit, you always were a snake, Thorne!" Thauren roared, pressing forward with renewed fury. "Today I will cut the head off this traitorous viper myself!"
Thorne only laughed, blood staining his teeth as he circled. "Haha, It’s not so easy to survive in this jungle and what better than tricking your enemy. Come then, Golden dog. Let’s see if your righteousness can overcome my venom!"
The two men crashed together once more, their blades locking as their spirits continued their apocalyptic duel in the skies above... golden light and poisonous green fire colliding in a storm of pure destruction that lit up the entire battlefield.
