The first volley of venomous arrows came down in a dark, hissing arc.
They cut through the humid air with a wet, ugly sound, the greasy green sheen of swamp-viper toxin catching what little light filtered through the overcast sky.
Shafts hammered into raised Veynar shields with a steady, irregular drumming.
Most thudded harmlessly into layered hide and wood.
A few did inevitably skip off rims or found narrow gaps between overlapping barriers.
One warrior in the second rank grunted as a tip scored his upper arm; he snapped the shaft, flung it aside, and kept moving. Zephyra’s earlier working had already thinned the potency of the venom across the approach.
Even though the wound burned a bit, it did not drop him, which means the only thing left was for his essence to slowly burn the venom away.
Even through the intense volley of arrows, no one in the Veynar column broke stride.
They did not treat the defense as a battle that needed to be won.
They treated it as an obstacle that needed to be cleared without ruining what lay behind it.
Thick essence stirred around her in a controlled, compressed haze ... strong enough to make the air itself feel heavier, but deliberately restrained.
She could have ended the entire defense in a single full release... shattered the palisade, flattened the gate, and crushed the spearmen in the shallows under raw Layer 4 pressure.
But she did not.
Now that they had won the war, they had no existential threat where they just needed to kill as many enemies as possible.
Now the focus had been shifted to post war management.
So, a settlement reduced to splinters and corpses was worth far less than one taken mostly intact.
The Veynar urgently needed numbers. They needed labor, outposts, and living populations that could be folded into their growing strength. Pointless destruction served none of that. So she held the greater part of her power in check and used only what was required to break resistance without erasing the place itself.
A focused pulse of pressure rolled across the bog approach. The softest sections of mud compressed with wet sucking sounds. Several hidden sinkholes belched foul water as they were forced open.
Several of the crude spike traps buried beneath the surface tilted or snapped, their points no longer aligned for clean kills.
The Zerith spearmen braced in the shallows felt the weight settle over them like a physical thing and staggered despite bracing themselves.
"Hold formation," Veylara ordered calmly. "Shields up. Advance."
The Veynar moved forward in good order.
To the left, Thauren’s detachment broke along the firmer root banks exactly as instructed, cutting a clean opening through the western thorn barrier and forcing the archers to divide their attention.
Weapons rose and fell. The living wall, already stressed by the shifting ground and the residual effects of Zephyra’s working, finally parted under determined blows.
Within moments a ragged opening existed. Zerith archers on that side of the ramparts were forced to turn and loose into the new threat, splitting their attention exactly as intended.
As the Veynar archers also took their positions and fired arrows, Sol’s girls weren’t idle either.
Kira’s arrows picked off the most exposed bowmen on the ramparts with clean, efficient shots.
Her first arrow took an archer through the shoulder as he leaned out to fire. The man spun, lost his footing on the wet boards, and went over the edge with a short cry. She was already nocking the next shaft.
Zeyra did not bother with ranged attacks, she stayed close to the main element, daggers ready for anyone who came within arm’s reach. Sol walked near Veylara, his crimson gaze tracked the ramparts and the spearmen in the shallows with cold assessment.
When the column reached the spearmen in the shallows, the difference in quality became obvious.
These were secondary guards and older line warriors... men left behind while the true strength of the Zerith had marched to the pass and died there.
They held their shields and stabbed with desperate determination, but they had no answer for a Layer 4 Warchief who had decided not to kill them all in a single breath.
They could not even truly threaten the Veynar force that had already broken stronger enemies. But they could still set their feet in the mud and try to make the price of entry bloody.
But alas, Veylara did not give them the clean defensive stand they wanted.
Veylara swept her spear in a tight, controlled arc. The burst of essence that followed was precise rather than catastrophic. It shattered the center of the shield wall, threw men backward into the mud, and opened a path without tearing the entire gatehouse apart.
"Forward."
Veynar warriors flowed into the gap at once.
The thirty Zerith spearmen met them with desperate determination.
Spears thrust from behind locked wicker shields in a tight, practiced rhythm. The first impact was a messy, close-quarters collision of wood, hide, and bone as the Veynar front rank slammed into them in the knee-deep murk.
Mud sucked at every step. Water sprayed with every impact.
Bodies strained against each other in the narrow, unstable footing of the shallows.
The Zerith being another race, had their own advantages
Their limbs were longer and more sinewy, built for the wet terrain. Their reaction speed was noticeably sharper... the kind of twitch-fast responsiveness that came from a different bloodline entirely.
More than once a Veynar warrior committed to a cut only to find the Zerith already shifting, spearhead angling in from an unexpected line.
Their fingers ended in hard, elongated nails that carried a natural venom; when the press grew tight enough, those nails raked across exposed forearms and necks, leaving burning lines that smoked faintly in the humid air.
But ultimately, the speed and venom were not enough.
Almost every Veynar warrior in the assault line stood at Layer 2 Peak or full Layer 3. They were battle-hardened, freshly blooded from the destruction of the Coalition’s true strength, and still carrying the momentum of unbroken victory.
The Zerith, by contrast, rarely reached even solid Layer 2.
The difference showed immediately.
A Zerith spearman lunged with blurring speed, aiming for the gap beneath a Veynar shield. The Veynar warrior... the same one who had taken an arrow through the gap in his armor earlier... roared a curse against the Zerith’s ancestors and met the thrust head-on.
His Layer 3 strength drove through the attempt. He smashed the spear aside with his shield rim, stepped in through the mud, and brought his own blade down in a sharp arc.
The Zerith twisted with that superior reaction speed, venomous nails flashing toward the Veynar’s neck, but the warrior caught the wrist, crushed it, and rammed his forehead into the Zerith fighter’s face. Cartilage broke. The Zerith staggered.
The Veynar finished him with a short, brutal thrust and shoved the body aside, still cursing through gritted teeth as the earlier arrow wound burned.
All along the line the same pattern repeated.
Zerith fighters used their speed to slip thrusts past guard and their nails to rake burning cuts across arms and cheeks.
In a contest of pure reflexes they often moved first. But when the blades and shields actually connected, the Veynar’s higher layer strength decided the exchange.
And with High Shaman constantly supporting them from behind, they did not have to worry about the their venoms.
