The morning was already bright when Dayo opened his eyes.

For a few seconds, he stayed where he was, listening to the quiet sounds coming from the other side of the room. Luna was moving around, and Jennifer had started making small noises from her cot.

Dayo turned toward the sound.

Luna was standing near the wardrobe, holding the red dress against herself again.

She caught him watching.

"You’ve been looking at me for a while."

"I was trying to decide if I made the right choice."

Luna looked down at the dress. "You did."

Dayo sat up. "Good."

She walked toward the mirror and held the dress against her body again. "You really liked this when you saw it?"

"I did."

"You didn’t just buy it because you wanted to surprise me?"

"I wanted to surprise you too."

Luna smiled at her reflection. "You don’t usually do things like this."

"I know."

"Maybe I should be worried."

Dayo laughed softly. "You should enjoy it."

A small cry came from Jennifer’s cot before Luna could answer. She turned immediately, but Dayo was already getting out of bed.

"I’ve got her."

Luna watched him walk over.

Jennifer was standing against the side of the cot, holding on with both hands. The moment she saw her father, she began moving toward him with the uneven confidence she had recently discovered.

"Papa."

The word was still imperfect, but it was clear enough.

Dayo stopped.

He looked at her for a moment before reaching down.

"You said it again."

Jennifer reached for him.

He picked her up and kissed her cheek. "My girl."

She laughed and grabbed his shirt.

Luna watched them from beside the wardrobe. "She’s going to keep doing that because she knows what it does to you."

Dayo turned toward her with Jennifer in his arms. "She can say it as many times as she wants."

"Even if she says it all day?"

"Especially then."

Jennifer reached toward Luna.

"Now she wants Mama."

Luna took her from him. "Come here, baby."

Dayo watched the two of them for a moment before looking back at the red dress.

"You’re wearing it today?"

Luna glanced at him. "I was thinking about it."

"You should."

"You really like it."

"I really like you."

She shook her head, but the smile stayed.

Breakfast took longer than usual because nobody seemed interested in rushing. Luna prepared something simple while Dayo stayed with Jennifer in the kitchen, keeping her occupied as she sat in her chair and watched everything happening around her.

Every few minutes, she reached toward something on the counter.

"No," Dayo told her gently.

Jennifer looked at him.

"That one too."

Her hand stopped.

Luna looked over from the stove. "She doesn’t understand you."

"She understands."

"She just doesn’t agree."

Dayo looked at his daughter. "That’s different."

Jennifer made a small sound and reached again.

Luna laughed.

Once breakfast was ready, they sat together. Jennifer was between them, trying to decide whose plate looked more interesting.

"Don’t give her yours," Luna said when she saw Dayo moving a piece toward her.

"I’m not."

"You are."

Dayo pulled his hand back. "She was looking at it."

"She looks at everything."

Jennifer reached for the food again.

Dayo gave in.

Luna shook her head. "You’re the reason she’ll never listen to me."

"She listens."

"Only when you say something she likes."

Dayo smiled and continued feeding Jennifer.

The meal ended with food on Jennifer’s clothes and a small amount on Dayo’s sleeve. Luna cleaned her daughter’s hands while Dayo wiped his own shirt.

Nobody seemed particularly bothered by the mess.

After breakfast, they stayed in the living room instead of separating into their usual routines. Dayo sat on the floor with Jennifer while Luna folded some clothes nearby.

Jennifer had become more confident with walking. She held onto the sofa, moved a few steps, stopped, and then looked toward her father.

"Come here," Dayo said.

She let go.

For one second, she stood without support.

Then she fell forward.

Dayo caught her before she reached the floor.

"Got you."

Jennifer laughed and immediately tried again.

Luna watched them. "She’s going to keep doing it until she gets it."

"That’s fine."

"You know she’ll eventually walk away from you."

Dayo looked at his daughter. "She can walk anywhere she wants."

Luna smiled. "That’s the answer I expected."

His phone vibrated on the table.

Dayo looked at it.

Felix.

The screen stayed lit for a few seconds.

Luna noticed but said nothing.

Dayo reached for the phone, read the message, and placed it face down again.

"You don’t have to ignore him because of me," Luna said.

"I’m not ignoring him."

"You didn’t answer."

"He said nothing was urgent."

Luna folded another piece of clothing. "What did he say?"

"Everything is moving. Nothing needs me right now."

She looked at him.

Dayo picked Jennifer up and settled her against his chest. "I told him I was taking today."

Luna nodded slowly.

"Good."

Dayo looked at her. "I should have done this earlier."

"You’ve been busy."

"That’s not an excuse."

"No, but it is a reason."

He was quiet for a moment.

Luna put the folded clothes aside and sat beside him.

"I don’t need you to feel guilty every time you’re home," she said. "I just want you to be home sometimes without thinking about everything else."

Dayo looked down at Jennifer.

"I know."

"Do you?"

He met her eyes.

"I do now."

She leaned closer and rested her head against his shoulder.

Jennifer reached up and touched Dayo’s chin.

He smiled.

For the rest of the morning, the phone stayed on the table.

Dayo did not pick it up again.

By the afternoon, they decided to leave the house.

There was no security detail following them this time. Dayo had asked his driver and bodyguards to stay back. He wanted to drive himself, and Luna had not argued with him.

Jennifer sat safely in the back while Luna settled beside her.

"You really want to drive?" Luna asked as she closed her door.

"Yes."

"You’ve been driving less lately."

"I know."

She looked at him for a second before fastening her seat belt. "All right."

The drive was quiet at first.

Dayo kept his eyes on the road while Luna watched the city through the window. Jennifer made occasional sounds from the back seat, especially whenever she noticed something outside.

"Look at her," Luna said.

Dayo glanced at the mirror.

Jennifer was staring out of the window.

"She likes going out."

"She likes looking at everything."

"She gets that from you."

Dayo smiled. "You keep blaming me for everything."

"Because you’re usually responsible."

He laughed.

They drove for a while without talking about work.

No one mentioned Michael.

Silas did not come up.

Felix stayed out of the conversation.

Dayo had spent enough time thinking about those things. For one afternoon, he wanted something else to occupy his mind.

When they returned home later, Luna took Jennifer upstairs while Dayo stayed downstairs for a few minutes.

His phone was still on the table.

The screen lit again.

Another message from Felix.

Dayo read it.

Everything is fine. Enjoy your time.

He stared at the words for a moment.

Then he put the phone away.

Upstairs, he heard Luna calling him.

"Dayo."

He walked toward the stairs. "What?"

"You need to come and see what your daughter has done."

He smiled as he climbed.

"What did she do?"

"I don’t even know where to start."

Dayo entered the room and found Jennifer sitting on the floor with several pieces of clothing scattered around her.

Luna stood nearby, looking at the mess.

Dayo looked at Jennifer.

Jennifer looked back at him.

"Was this you?"

She smiled.

Luna crossed her arms. "Don’t encourage her."

"I didn’t say anything."

"You were about to."

Dayo picked up one of the clothes and placed it back where it belonged.

Jennifer reached for another.

"Leave that one," Luna said.

Dayo stopped.

Jennifer looked between them.

For a moment, neither parent moved.

Then Dayo laughed.

Luna tried to stay serious but eventually smiled too.

The evening passed quietly after that.

Dinner was simple. Jennifer ate more slowly than usual, and Dayo ended up feeding her while Luna cleared the table. Afterward, they took turns getting her ready for bed.

When Jennifer finally fell asleep, Dayo and Luna returned to their room.

The red dress was still hanging near the wardrobe.

Luna walked toward it.

"You still like it?" Dayo asked.

She touched the fabric. "I do."

"Good."

She turned toward him. "You know what I liked more?"

"What?"

"That you thought about me when you were somewhere else."

Dayo didn’t answer immediately.

Luna stepped closer and placed her hand against his chest.

"You’ve been thinking about everybody lately," she said. "The company, the campaign, your people, all of it. Sometimes I wonder if you remember to think about yourself."

"I don’t."

"I know."

He covered her hand with his.

"I’m trying to remember what matters."

Luna smiled. "You don’t have to figure everything out tonight."

Dayo leaned down and kissed her.

The kiss was gentle, unhurried.

When they separated, Luna rested against him.

Outside their room, the house remained quiet.

For once, Dayo did not feel like he was waiting for the next problem.

He was exactly where he wanted to be.

His phone stayed untouched on the table.

The world could wait until morning.
