Zunoder took the receipt from the lockbox without touching it.

The paper lifted to his hand because the route wanted to hear him. Ty let it happen, and that annoyed JJ more than the receipt did.

"Why are we letting him hold that?" she asked.

"Because he has been waiting to say something true," Ty said.

Zunoder smiled with the old face. "You are becoming practical."

"I am becoming tired of your easy lies. Use the hard one."

The receipt turned over. The signature line stayed blacked out, but three marks appeared below it.

CART RESPONSE.

B.H. RESPONSE.

RETURN AFTER CORRECTION.

Zunoder placed the marks on the hallway floor like stones across water. The first brightened under repeated calls. The second answered to repeated tasks. The third lit for repeated return after correction.

"None require personhood," he said. "A bell answers when pulled. A door opens when pushed. A trained handler returns when summoned because the system has shaped him to return."

The hallway listened and accepted the ugliness because it fit too well.

JJ's ledger shook against her arms. "Do not compare him to a bell."

Zunoder looked at her. "Then give me a better description for a label used to request service."

He tapped the first stone with one knuckle.

It rang.

The sound was thin and useful. A service desk bell. A call button. A thing designed to be struck so nobody had to raise a voice.

Ty's hand moved before he meant it to.

Yun-Jin caught his wrist. "Do not break the example."

"I hate the example."

"That is why he chose it."

The bell-stone rang again without being touched. The sound pulled at the old hallway memories: porter calls, desk buzzers, a nurse knocking a clipboard against a counter because storage hands let her stay seated.

The route liked all of those. It stacked them beside Zunoder.

BUZZER RESPONSE.

DESK CALL.

STORAGE HANDS REQUESTED.

Ty watched the stack form. Some calls had nothing hidden inside them. Just use. He had gone because the floor taught him what happened when he stayed still.

Zunoder's old face softened by a fraction, which was almost worse than mockery. "You see it."

"Yes."

Ty looked down the hall at the cart, the badge, the warning slip, and the lockbox. He had answered all of them. Bad requests. Empty rooms. Small protected things hidden inside insults.

"Function happened," he said.

JJ turned toward him.

"I know," he said before she could argue.

Omina held up one hand. "Let him make the wound exact."

Ty hated the kindness in that.

The bell-stone rang a third time. Ty put his foot on it hard enough to kill the sound under his heel.

"Function happened," he said again. "It gets one column."

He looked at Zunoder. "Some calls used me like a thing."

The hallway wrote the line at once.

HOSTILE FACT ACKNOWLEDGED.

Zunoder bowed with the receipt, and Ty warned him not to get comfortable before the old face could enjoy the admission too much.

"I never do," Zunoder said.

Ty pointed to the cart note first, and JJ wrote it under utility call. The badge came next, shorthand that might be shame or convenience but still belonged under dirty call. The warning slip and punch clock went under returned after cost.

The lockbox receipt trembled.

"The part you keep skipping," Ty said, "is what changed while I was there."

Zunoder's smile thinned. "A useful function can produce protective results."

"Yes."

The answer hit the room wrong. Erebos printed:

PROTECTIVE RESULT CANNOT PROVE PURPOSE ALONE.

"Good," Ty said.

JJ made a strangled sound. "You keep saying good at terrible things."

"Because terrible things that stand still can be cut."

Yun-Jin looked at him from the edge of the hall. "That sounded almost like a plan."

"Do not make it bigger than it is."

JJ drew a third column between utility and help.

CALL CHANGED.

Omina nodded. "There."

Zunoder read it. "Convenient middle."

"Necessary middle," Omina said. "People often begin wrong and change under pressure."

"Or pretend to change after the tool works."

"Yes."

The hallway accepted that too, and JJ hated the hallway very openly.

She placed the cart note under UTILITY CALL, the badge under DIRTY CALL, and the warning slip under RETURNED AFTER COST. The lockbox receipt hovered over CALL CHANGED and refused to settle.

The private message from the shelter appeared beside it.

ASK WHY HE CAME BACK BEFORE YOU ASK WHO I AM.

Zunoder touched the message with one finger. "Anonymous witness. Admits shame. Requests control over the order of questions. Attackable on motive before they speak."

The message tried to fold inward as if the witness could feel him touching it.

Jade's text came through at once.

LEAVE THE MESSAGE ALONE.

The hallway considered whether a text order counted. Waddell added his own line before it could decide.

ORDER FROM WADDELL, NOT REQUEST.

The message unfolded by one corner.

JJ marked:

WITNESS LIMIT DEFENDED BEFORE TESTIMONY.

Jade answered from the shelter feed. "They asked for a limit."

Zunoder looked toward the feed. "Limit or manipulation?"

"Both can be checked," Jade said. "If they vanish, they vanish alive."

The hallway put Jade's answer under cost. Zunoder let it stand because it hurt Ty's side too.

"And your side loses weight."

"Yes," Jade said, and the answer landed harder than a refusal.

Ty watched the private message and tried to find a clean reason for why he had come back. Hunger had been there, along with fear, habit, anger, the file, the bracelet, the child behind the door, the porter who asked badly, and the porter who later sounded scared.

The route waited for him to select one. Ty gave it none and pushed the hearing forward before the hallway could turn that refusal into another category.

"Purpose is next," he said, and Erebos answered before Zunoder could make the pause his.

CONTINUITY INSUFFICIENT WITHOUT PURPOSE UNDER COST.

Zunoder spread his hands. "Then we agree again."

JJ's mouth tightened, but Heissman took the receipt from the air before she could spend the disgust badly. "Agreement can be useful or ugly."

"Better than your first version," JJ said.

The receipt finally settled in CALL CHANGED.

It landed between help and utility. Changed, and still contested.

Ty accepted the smaller win because fighting for a bigger one would make it lie.

The hallway floor opened along the line between the columns. Below it waited another memory, a call that began with a laugh and broke before the person speaking could pretend it had been kind.

Someone said, "B.H., wait."

The voice belonged to the same person who had scratched the letters into the badge.

Zunoder looked down into the opening and smiled. "Let us see whether shame is the same as purpose."
