From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 795 - 795: The First Origin FailsThe question arrived plain enough for everyone to use.
Why did Bone Half return?
It sat across the hallway floor where Ty could not step around it. Zunoder looked comfortable with the wording, and that told Ty the question had already been built with room for every ugly answer.
"Conditioning," Zunoder said. "Hunger. Supervision. Repeated response to institutional call. Fear cues from staff. Duty pressure. Pick one if you want mercy. Pick all if you want accuracy."
JJ opened her ledger with one hand. The other still held the broken pencil from the last fight with the record. "You do not get to make a menu out of him."
"I am naming what the witness gave us."
The turned-wristband witness stayed behind the chair with the bracelet facing inward. No legal name. No face. No child. The limits made the room smaller in a way Ty liked, even while they left him exposed where Zunoder wanted him.
Omina stepped close enough to read the floor without blocking the witness. "Purpose review cannot begin by assigning motive from outside."
Zunoder lifted one finger. "Then ask him."
The hallway leaned toward Ty. Yun-Jin moved before the pressure reached his ribs and set one boot on the first line of the question.
"No," she said.
Erebos tried to write around her boot that subject testimony was available. Yun-Jin kept her foot in place. "That is bait."
"Everything is bait to you," Heissman said.
"Most things here have hooks."
Ty looked at the question and felt old pieces shifting behind it. Food held back. A torn sleeve. The warning box with its slot open. A bracelet in his hand. A person asking too late. He could answer, but the answer was already trying to dress itself for whoever would use it next.
Fast answers performed for the route. Clean answers turned hunger into decoration. Ugly answers gave Zunoder both feet on the floor.
The witness saved him from the first mistake. "I cannot confirm why he came."
JJ turned toward the chair.
"I can confirm I called," the witness said. "I can confirm he returned. I can confirm he made me sign. I cannot climb into him and call that truth."
Omina nodded once. "Record the limit."
The route accepted the witness limit as inner purpose not confirmed. Zunoder accepted it too, which meant he had already found the piece he wanted.
"Then their testimony is continuity, not purpose," he said.
"Yes," Omina answered, and JJ shot her a look.
Omina did not soften it. "Yes. That is the limit."
Ty needed that kind of accuracy even when it cut. A defense that lied kindly would only give Zunoder a cleaner blade.
The witness's wrist turned inward again. "I called him B.H. that day, but I was not the first."
The hallway changed like a cabinet unlocking somewhere behind the wall.
JJ's pencil found the page. "Say that again."
"I was not the first."
Zunoder's comfort sharpened into interest. The route pulled the letters from the earlier file, then broke the prior assumption apart. The turned-wristband witness had used B.H.; the witness had not created it.
Ty stared at that failed origin and waited for loss. Tiredness came instead.
"Storage was already using it," the witness said. "Not every time. Not on every slip. Enough that I picked it up because it was there."
Their thumb moved along the taped bracelet edge. "There was a board by the supply room. White board. Names wiped off badly. Initials stayed longer because initials took less space and less courage."
JJ wrote that B.H. was preexisting staff shorthand and the witness adopted it. She kept the sentence ugly.
"Who wrote it first?" Omina asked.
The witness's hand tightened on the chair arm. "No name I can trust."
The answer cost them. Ty saw it in the wrist, not the voice. The wrist wanted to turn the bracelet farther inward, as if hiding the name side could hide the failure too.
Omina entered the limit before Zunoder could call it weakness. First writer unknown.
Heissman leaned in with the timing of a man who knew he was about to be hated. "That makes the origin worse."
"Useful insight. Terrible bedside manner," JJ said.
"I am not at a bedside," he said, and JJ told him to act like one might appear before the witness heard too much of him.
Yun-Jin looked at Ty instead of the argument. "Feel that?"
He nodded. The hallway was trying to offer him Zunoder's answer. Staff shorthand. No first choice. Hunger and fear waiting nearby with handles. If Ty reached for the first solid thing, it would be the thing Zunoder had already prepared.
"It is offering me his answer," Ty said.
Yun-Jin's mouth went flat. "Lazy."
Zunoder almost laughed. "Efficient."
Omina stepped between them. "Invalidating one origin grants no hostile purpose."
"It removes a clean witness origin."
"Clean witness origin was never offered."
"Then thank you for agreeing that Bone Half began as staff shorthand."
The words hit the floor hard enough for the route to like them. Staff shorthand. Ty felt the liking under his feet.
JJ stabbed the page with her pencil. "Source is not ownership."
"Source matters."
"So does change."
Zunoder turned toward the witness. "Did he choose the letters?"
The witness stayed quiet. Omina recorded silence as silence, not admission. JJ wrote the limit anyway: no confirmed choice at origin.
The line cut. Ty let it.
He had spent too much time fighting facts because someone ugly had spoken them. That kept handing ugly people the cleanest weapon in the room.
"The first call was not mine to choose," Ty said.
The hallway snapped toward him. Yun-Jin's hand lifted, then stopped.
Ty made himself finish. "I chose some answers after."
Zunoder smiled. "Some."
"Yes."
The word carried badly. It still carried.
Heissman looked at Ty with academic approval and personal discomfort mixed together. "That is narrower."
"Narrow is still a place," Ty said.
JJ wrote the meaning before the route could make it pretty. The route replaced her phrasing with the harder version: origin from staff shorthand, choice at origin unconfirmed, later response contested.
Zunoder stepped back from the question with a satisfaction Ty wanted to hit.
Ty held still. The restraint cost less than it used to and more than he liked.
Erebos opened the next rule under the failed origin. If origin was imposed, purpose had to be proven by cost-bearing change.
JJ read it twice. Omina's face tightened. Heissman muttered that this was where systems became most dangerous, then had to explain when JJ looked ready to bite.
"Origin was imposed," he said. "Later action is contested. Purpose becomes the remaining way to prove change without pretending the origin was clean."
"Awful," JJ said, and Heissman gave the small yes of a man who had already surrendered comfort. When she called it useful too, he said ugly things often ended up on the same shelf.
Ty kept his eyes on the failed origin line. Staff shorthand. First writer unknown. Choice at origin unconfirmed. The words stayed where JJ had pinned them.
Every later answer would have to bring its own cost.
The witness turned the bracelet inward until the tape edge scraped the chair again. "I can tell you when it changed for me."
Zunoder looked pleased.
Ty looked at the witness and shook his head once. "Only if the limit holds."
The witness's hand stopped.
Jade answered from the shelter feed before the route could. Limit holds.
Waddell added the practical terms under it. Camera off. Name off. Child out.
Erebos accepted the boundary, but the floor stayed hard. The first origin had failed, and the witness reached for their cup and missed it on the first try.
Ty watched the water shake against the paper rim while Zunoder waited for the next word to belong to him.
