From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 809 - 809: The Empty Contact LogThe contact log tried to win by repeating itself.
It gave the same times, the same blank boxes, and the same authority stamp at the end of the line. Ty watched the entries crawl across the drawer again and understood why the file liked repetition. People got tired. Once they were tired enough, an empty box could start to look like an answer.
Family contact had been deferred at 22:44, deferred again at 22:51, then deferred by authority code at 23:03.
JJ sat on the drawer edge with her marked wrist tucked against her body.
"If it prints deferred again, I am suing paper."
Heissman said that might be the first complaint the room understood. JJ told him to save encouragement for people with healthier hobbies.
The log printed again anyway. The ink came out clean each time, like cleanliness could make an absence behave. Ty watched the blank name field and felt the trick in it. Blank looked harmless. Blank looked like nobody had been harmed yet. The times beside it said otherwise.
Omina stood between the log and the name lanes. She had already written family absence weight reduced twice because the drawer kept trying to bury the line under older ink.
Ty watched her shoulders. Omina's body gave away less than most people's, but effort showed in how still she had become. He had learned from Jade that stillness could be labor.
Zunoder waited until the third print cycle ended.
"The contact log remains empty of actual contact."
Omina kept her hilt across the reduced-weight line.
"Temporarily, because effort now has its own line."
"There is still no family in this room."
Yun-Jin's cost line still glowed weakly. Association had lost family-priority standing in this review. Zunoder looked at it as if it were a receipt.
"That is correct, and it still matters differently."
The yes helped Zunoder. It also kept the board honest. Ty hated honest boards, but they still beat clean lies.
The shelter feed flickered. Rose stood behind the taped visitor line, not beside Mara. The tape had been moved two feet farther from the table, measured so neatly that Ty hated it more than he would have hated a ripped strip. A ripped strip could be fixed by hands. This one had been made official.
Mara sat at the table with both hands around a paper cup. The tea had gone untouched. Jade stood near her but left space, and when Mara's thumb bent the rim, Jade placed a fresh cup nearby without touching her hand.
The shelter had learned how to help without giving the room a handle.
Rose spoke from behind the tape.
"Mara recognizes the deferral pattern from records work."
Mara's fingers tightened.
Jade turned toward Rose.
"Can she answer without reentering the side hall again?"
Rose looked at Mara instead of answering for her. Ty had started grading people for that without noticing when it began.
Mara read the tablet text. The contact log reflected in her glasses, three deferred entries stacked where a family should have been. Her thumb had crushed the rim of the old cup flat on one side. She noticed, set it down, and took the fresh one Jade had left within reach.
"Deferred means somebody wanted the next person kept out until later."
The route grabbed the sentence too broadly as procedural memory. Rose lifted one hand. The tape kept her where she could only say the limit, not act on it.
"Limit the memory to the work rule only."
Omina marked Mara's procedural memory as limited with no side hall expansion.
Zunoder objected at once.
"Then the memory enters with very little weight."
Rose answered before Mara could be tempted.
"Limited weight is the cost we accepted here."
Mara looked down at her tea. The answer cost her. The room wanted more from her, and Rose stood too far away to do anything except help her stop.
The visitor tape made the distance exact. Rose saw Mara's fingers bend around the cup and heard when she swallowed wrong. The tape held Rose's hands away from the table, the fresh cup, and the tablet angle. The room had turned care into a measured gap and then made everyone watch the measurement work.
Jade moved one step closer to the table.
Mara kept looking at the cup.
"I can give one more work sentence today."
Rose's hand closed against the tape.
"One sentence, and then the door closes again."
Mara swallowed.
"Deferred is an action entry, not an empty box."
She said it like someone repeating a work rule, not a memory. That made it easier for the room to take and harder for Ty to watch. Rose stayed behind the tape with her hand closed at her side, spending the little access she had on stopping Mara from giving more.
The contact log stopped repeating. The route accepted the limited procedural memory. Deferred became an action entry instead of blank absence.
Zunoder looked irritated for the first time in several pages.
"Still no contact reached a family member here."
Yun-Jin answered without turning from the log.
"Still an action against contact by the office."
The empty boxes remained, but the deferred entries darkened. Omina underlined action. The drawer tried to fade it.
JJ lifted her marked wrist a few inches.
"I pay nothing today and still glare professionally."
The word held.
She lowered her wrist slower than she had raised it. The sponsor mark stayed dull this time. That dullness mattered. The room had learned to expect payment whenever resistance appeared. JJ made it accept attention instead, and attention cost less only because she had already paid too much.
Heissman leaned toward the log with his hands behind his back.
"EA-0 can defer contact without naming the lower office."
JJ looked at him.
"Protects the chain from what, exactly, Heissman, here?"
Heissman let his eyes stay on the line.
"Review, blame, interference, and families asking human questions."
Ty looked at him.
"Say people instead of families asking human questions."
Heissman nodded once.
"It protects the office from people reaching it."
Erebos let that sentence stand. Correction would have felt safer.
Zunoder recovered.
"Or it protected procedure during emergency handling conditions."
Omina moved the hilt so its edge split the blank space between both claims.
"Enter both possibilities and keep them separated visibly."
Two possibilities appeared with space between them. Authority code could indicate emergency control. Authority code could indicate contact avoidance.
Omina checked the spacing and moved the second line one column to the right. The drawer tried to stack them again. She pressed her hilt across the gap.
"Separate possibilities with one shared authority source visible."
The gap held. Ty understood the danger in that spacing. If the office could stack every possibility into one shape, emergency would swallow every hand that used it.
He looked at the two lines until his fingers loosened. Emergency had saved people before. It had also covered for people. The room wanted those facts pressed into one stamp because one stamp was easier to swing like a hammer.
The consent line came forward from the bottom of the page, still sealed.
It moved differently from the contact log. The log had repeated like a tired clerk. The consent line waited like a locked office with someone still inside.
JJ stood too fast and grabbed the drawer to keep her balance. Omina reached toward her, then stopped before the room could spend the gesture.
Rose spoke from behind the shelter tape.
"Do not let it make the missing answer into consent."
Mara said something too low for the tablet to catch, but Jade heard enough and typed the useful version. A missing answer stays outside consent.
The sentence entered the hallway.
Zunoder looked at Ty.
"Then show the refusal that should stop the file."
The blank refusal record opened beside the consent line. The file reported no refusal record found.
Ty stared at it. He remembered no refusal. He remembered no question. The file had made those two absences fight each other.
That was the ugliest trick so far. It offered him a blank and asked him to disprove it with a memory nobody had allowed him to make. His hand opened at his side, closed again, then opened because breaking the drawer would only give the file one more response to capture.
Erebos opened the consent seal one inch.
Under it, a new line waited.
