From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 862 - 862: Dorsey Closed The Old DeskMercy General sent Caelin through three extensions before Administrator Elaine Dorsey answered from a stairwell.
Her breathing came hard over the phone. A fire door struck the wall behind her, followed by somebody asking whether she had found security.
"I found them, and I need to know why your office believes my hospital reopened a desk that was removed last winter."
Caelin placed the call on the speaker beside his aide. "The retired credential created a false interview at the shelter and exposed Mr. Hollis's room. Protect him before you search anything."
Dorsey stopped climbing. "Security is outside his room, and his name is gone from the public directory. Moving him requires medical clearance."
Mr. Hollis's daughter was already on the other line. Caelin merged the calls after asking her permission.
"My father is asleep, and the doctor says another move could hurt him," she said. "I will approve a room change when his doctor does. I will not let an office hide him in a closet because its computer failed."
Dorsey leaned against the stair rail. "You have my word that he stays in a patient room. I can lock the floor and change his directory name while the doctor decides."
"Use a name I can remember, and tell the nurses before security starts frightening them. When he wakes, explain why everyone is calling him Henry. I do not want him thinking he lost his mind."
Dorsey chose the alias Henry Lake, repeated it to Mr. Hollis's daughter, and made the charge nurse repeat it back. The nurse promised to explain the alias before the next medication check. Security closed the visitor elevator while leaving the staff lift available for patient care.
Only then did Dorsey continue toward the retired desk.
At the shelter, Jade listened with Waddell beside the parking monitors. Grant's car was gone. The second reporter still sat beyond the roadblock, but his camera pointed toward his own steering wheel.
"I can send two deputies to Mercy General," Waddell said. "They will arrive after hospital security has already touched everything."
"Keep them here until Hollis moves or the doctor refuses the move," Jade said. "The shelter cannot empty itself every time the route changes buildings."
Tessa stood in the cafeteria doorway with a fresh bandage and no phone in her hands. "I am staying with the families. Nobody needs me at the hospital to prove a desk exists."
Jade handed Tessa the shelter radio. Tessa checked the battery and walked back toward the family rooms while Jade opened the hospital floor plan on paper.
Dorsey reached the old public corridor with a facilities supervisor named Luis Park and one security officer. The desk had been built into an alcove between the chapel elevator and a family waiting room. A sheet of construction plastic covered the counter. Somebody had cut a rectangle from the plastic where the keyboard used to sit.
Park pulled on work gloves. "This alcove lost power when we renovated the waiting room. The network jack should be dead too."
"Check it while I stand here watching your hands," Dorsey said. "Nobody needs to explain later what you might have touched."
He removed the lower cabinet panel. A live network cable ran from the retired wall jack into a small switch mounted beside the old family-notification printer. The switch carried a Mercy General inventory tag. A newer cable entered through a hole drilled into the back of the cabinet.
Park followed it with a flashlight. The cable disappeared into the wall toward the night routing room.
"This hidden line is still carrying live traffic," he said. "If I pull it now, I could drop the family update portal for the entire east wing."
Dorsey called the charge desk and asked how many families were using that portal. The answer came back at sixty-three, including relatives waiting for updates from surgery and intensive care.
Caelin heard the number through her phone. "My staff can take calls while you rebuild the route. I have four people and an office already paying overtime."
"Four people cannot answer for sixty-three families."
"They can answer for the first hour while your supervisors build a phone tree. My office created part of this access problem, so my staff carries part of the shutdown."
Dorsey looked through the glass wall at the family waiting room. People were charging phones along the baseboards, eating from vending machines, and watching a muted television for information it would never carry.
"Give me twenty minutes to put humans on every update list," she said. "Park cuts the line after those twenty minutes."
Across the route, Ty set the hospital feed beside the earlier temporary-desk record. Both paths used an empty work label to move a burden somebody had hidden.
"The retired information desk is another route host," Ty said. "The bridge operator kept the old address and changed what it was sending."
Heissman compared the public credential with the earlier routing mask. "The first mask hid child and body burdens from a downstream worker. This one hides witness consent behind a confirmed appointment."
JJ tapped the hospital cable on the office feed. "Same trick, better clothes. The worker sees a clean task, while somebody upstream keeps the dirt."
Omina kept the child fields sealed and opened only the authority comparison. The route accepted the common operator class without naming a person. Zunoder remained at the far edge of the corridor, close enough to listen and too careful to argue before the cost appeared.
"A public appointment still uses a living worker," he said. "The reporter cancelled after receiving a better offer. His bargain proves only that Caelin paid with a more useful story."
Ty turned from the corridor to the gate recording. "Grant's screen said Tessa confirmed. Tessa never touched it. The desk issued the credential and the appointment three minutes apart. You can call that coincidence after you find a third person who gave the yes."
Zunoder spread Ty's old hands. "Public systems confirm appointments without signatures every day."
"Then public systems can lose the desk that abused the shortcut."
Dorsey spent the twenty minutes walking from nurse to nurse. She assigned each family to a staff member, gave Caelin's four workers the overflow list, and wrote her personal number on the intensive care desk board. Mr. Hollis's doctor refused the room move and approved a locked-floor hold under the Henry Lake alias. His daughter stayed beside him.
Park returned to the cabinet when the last family portal user had a phone contact. He photographed the cable, the switch, and the serial labels before reaching for the plug.
Dorsey put her hand over his wrist. "Tell me what dies when you remove it."
"The east-wing portal loses this bridge. The retired public desk loses its network path. Night routing keeps its main line unless somebody tied them together wrong."
"Pull it, and leave the cable where security can bag it."
Park removed the plug.
Phones began ringing throughout the east wing. Caelin's office received eleven calls in the first minute. Nurses answered the rest from handwritten lists while Dorsey stood beside the dead switch and listened to people do the work the portal had hidden.
The false interview disappeared from the archive search page. Grant's cancelled appointment remained in the public log, but its issuing credential changed to suspended at source. Caelin's aide took screenshots before the archive could rewrite the label.
On Ty's side, the public credential lane broke away from the old desk. The protected verdict stayed where it was. Zunoder kept the Hollis rescue action and lost the hospital's shortcut to new witnesses.
Two minutes after Park pulled the cable, a woman called Dorsey from Station Four and asked why sixty-three family updates had arrived in her work queue at once. Dorsey asked whether the station had received anything else from the retired desk.
The woman checked her screen. "One public interview request came through before the family queue buried it. The witness field is empty, and the request says a staff escort can complete confirmation."
Dorsey looked at the cable on the floor. "Leave the request unopened and lock your station door. I am coming to you with security."
