The woman in the tank looked past Erebos and found Kegaku's ruined hand.

Her right palm opened against the glass. The graft copied her from across the room, peeling itself off the black table while Kegaku fought to keep his elbow down. Its surviving teeth opened around a piece of burned white thread.

The woman's mouth moved inside the cloudy water.

Her voice came through the graft, thin but still understandable.

"Bring my hand to the glass before the collector cuts again."

Kegaku stared at the woman. His lips parted around an answer, but the curse marks under his collar pulled tight before he could give it.

Erebos kept one hand on the tank's gold rim.

"The connection failed twice before, and you will remain still."

The woman flexed her fingers. Kegaku's graft clamped around his wrist hard enough to fold him over the table.

"She appears to disagree with the person speaking for her."

Jade caught Kegaku under his good arm and pulled him upright. Kieran took the other side, keeping her blade between his throat and the curse marks beneath his collar.

The Reaper came through the corridor before they reached the tank.

Ty struck the scythe with both sickles. His loose shoulder failed under the impact, and one blade spun from his hand. It skipped under the control box beside Jade's boot.

Erebos dragged shadow across the Reaper's robe. The cloth pinned to the floor while the bones inside kept walking. Its arm stretched beyond the sleeve and drove the scythe shaft into Ty's chest.

Three splinters punched through his back and struck the walkway.

"Ty, keep its blade away from the tank controls."

"I was hoping to keep it away from everything important."

He hooked his remaining sickle behind the Reaper's wrist and dropped his weight. Kieran shoved Kegaku toward Jade, then met the scythe with gold fire before its edge reached the gauges.

The blade pressed her fire down until the control box began to buckle.

Inside the tank, the woman struck the glass with her open palm.

The graft hit from the other side at the same place.

Water shivered between both hands. Black seams crawled across the graft, arranging themselves into the same pattern as the twelve wires around the woman's body. One seam ended at the missing half of its mouth. Another ran to Kegaku's elbow and pulled him close enough that his forehead touched the glass.

"I came back because I need to know which line hurts."

The graft repeated his words in the woman's voice, bent by the water and the ruined teeth.

She pointed to the fourth wire entering below her left ribs.

Jade followed it through the tank wall. The line passed behind the feed pumps without touching either one. It continued beneath the floor toward the bridge and the empty throne.

"That wire feeds the throne, and the pumps never touch it."

Erebos pulled his shadow tighter around the Reaper.

"Every line holds part of her together inside stopped time."

Jade put two fingers against the fourth gauge. Its needle stayed level while the woman pulled the wire until the skin around its contact lifted.

The pressure gauge beside it stayed level while the wire stretched.

"Her body disagrees with your explanation, so release the lock."

"You have inspected the machine for less than five minutes."

"She has lived inside it longer, and she chose the same wire."

Erebos looked at the woman. She kept pulling.

His hand left the gold rim and closed around Jade's wrist before she reached the lock.

Kegaku's graft bit the glass above the control seam.

The sound drove through every chair on the bridge. The LEGATO helm dropped from above Ty and struck his loose shoulder. Its empty face opened along the white mark, trying to close around the side of his skull.

Ty rammed his forehead into it. Bone cracked against the smooth shell, though the helm stayed attached and dragged him toward the tank.

The Reaper changed direction before Ty recovered his footing.

Its scythe tore free of Kieran's fire and cut the floor between Jade and Erebos. The split continued beneath the tank. One of the feed pumps jumped against its bolts and began coughing gray fluid into the return hose.

Jade tore her wrist from Erebos and reached the pump before he could stop her again. She squeezed the return hose shut with both hands while Kieran drove her blade beneath the pump housing to brace it.

"The feed is reversing because your floor line just opened."

"Then close the split before the filter empties into her."

"You close it while I keep your patient from swallowing sediment."

Erebos knelt beside the crack. Shadow packed into the split and hardened around the shaking bolts.

While Erebos worked, the woman twisted the fourth contact until blood rose around her ribs.

Kegaku pushed his graft harder against the glass.

"Please wait until Jade can release it from outside."

The woman shook her head. The graft spoke while its teeth scored a circle into the glass.

"He always finds another reason to make waiting sound merciful."

Erebos's hands stopped inside the broken floor, and his shadow slackened around the bolts.

Ty heard the sentence while the Legato helm pulled him across the bridge. He planted both feet, but the chair marks under the wood moved with him. The helmet wanted the tank, and the Reaper changed its grip to follow whatever the empty face had found.

He quit fighting the pull and ran with it.

The burst carried him past the scythe. He drove the helm into the tank's gold rim hard enough to dent its blank cheek. The woman's eyes followed the name burned across its face.

Fear pulled both hands away from the wire.

"Keep Legato outside the glass because that name belongs elsewhere."

Kegaku's good hand grabbed the helm at Ty's temple. He pulled while Ty worked the point of his sickle under its jaw.

"It belonged to a hero on Sycle before he disappeared."

"Then someone built this copy after the hero went missing."

The woman's answer came through the graft with enough force to reopen its burned seams.

Erebos rose from the repaired floor. His calm had returned in pieces, none fitted correctly.

"You remember one object and assume you remember its purpose."

The woman pressed her bleeding hand to the glass beside Kegaku's graft.

"I remember asking you to destroy every empty face."

The fourth wire pulled tight inside the tank.

Across the bridge, the empty throne turned toward her. Its carved arms opened as black thread raced beneath the floor toward the contact under her ribs.

Jade put Ty's fallen sickle through the lock on the fourth line and drove her heel into the handle until the metal bent.

Under her boot, the lock broke and sent its brass pin beneath the tank.

Inside the glass, the woman ripped the contact free and curled around the wound. Pressure held while both feed pumps worked against the extraction filter's slow pull.

Only the throne lost power, its black threads stalling beneath the floor.

Its back split from top to bottom. The LEGATO helm released Ty and flew toward the collapsing chair, taking Kegaku's good hand with it for three steps before he let go.

The Reaper met the helm halfway across the broken bridge.

Its scythe passed through the burned name. The shell broke open, exposing a packed mass of black feathers and a small glass tooth suspended at the center.

The tooth carried violet light beneath two black feathers.

At Omina's table, the loose end of Yun-Jin's thread had gone rigid above the frozen tablet. She looped it around her bow grip, planted one boot against the table leg, and pulled until the violet strand cut through the leather on her palm.

JJ caught the bow with both hands before it twisted out of line.

"Whatever has the other end weighs more than Ty did."

"Ty was helping from his side, while this object resists us."

Zunoder reached toward the thread with Ty's old hand. Omina set her hilt across his fingers and pinned them to the table without looking away from the sealed records.

"His body already supplied one route, and it receives no second vote."

The violet strand moved by the width of a fingernail. A hard object scraped beyond the closed road, then caught again. Yun-Jin wound the thread once more around her grip. Blood reached the feathers of her nearest arrow.

JJ leaned backward with her, one boot scraping the table leg.

"Pull on three because I refuse to lose another door."

They pulled before either woman counted, the bow creaking between them.

The tooth tore free of the broken helm and struck the tank glass between the woman's palm and Kegaku's graft.

A thin violet crack spread beneath their joined hands.

The woman looked through it toward the road Erebos had ordered severed.

"Kegaku, find my flute because we are leaving his prison."
