Jade put her hand on the tank before anyone pushed it toward the violet crack.

"The pumps cross first, and the gold rim stays here."

Ty braced his good shoulder against the tank base. Erebos spread shadow beneath the loosened mount, ready to lift. Both stopped under Jade's raised hand.

The woman in the tank pointed toward the extraction filter. Her graft repeated the gesture through Kegaku's damaged arm.

"Blood filter first because the ordinary current will move faster."

Jade shut the filter's upper clamp. Gray fluid packed against the mesh while she closed the lower side, trapping enough tank water to keep the cartridge full. Two bolts held it beneath the control box.

The first bolt turned. The second had bent when the Reaper split the floor.

Kegaku pulled his lip free from the broken flute. Skin tore against the open brace, though he kept the metal piece pinched between his fingers.

"Use this under the bolt before you strip its head."

Jade took the brace and wedged it beneath the bent edge. Kegaku leaned his good hand over hers. Together they turned until the bolt gave and the filter dropped into Jade's lap.

"You repaired the instrument with stronger metal than your master's tank."

"The tank was built to protect her, while the flute was built to survive me."

The Reaper dragged its scythe through Ty's shoulder.

Bone opened around the blade. Ty locked both sickles over the shaft and kept the edge from reaching Jade. Erebos sent a black spike through the Reaper's robe and pinned its lower spine to the map table.

"Move the filter before our cooperation becomes embarrassing."

Jade tied the filter to Yun-Jin's arrow with the fifth wire. The violet point pulled from outside and drew the cartridge into the crack.

Glass resisted the wider body. Kieran placed her gold blade above the arrowhead and pressed along the existing fracture. She kept both hands on the hilt while old control pain tightened beneath her breastbone.

"The flute is quiet, and my arm is still mine."

"Keep telling your body until the filter reaches your friends."

Kieran opened the fracture another inch. Yun-Jin pulled the filter through.

At Omina's table, the cartridge struck JJ in the stomach hard enough to fold her over it. She caught both ends before either clamp opened and lowered the filter beside the frozen tablet.

"I found the machine part, but instructions would improve delivery."

Jade's voice came clearly through the arrow's hollow shaft.

"Keep it level and leave both gray clamps closed."

Omina swept her sealed records from the center of the table and cleared a path toward the floor. Zunoder moved to take the filter with Ty's old hand.

Omina's hilt stopped across his wrist before he touched the filter.

"Hold the table steady because the route receives no bodies."

Zunoder gripped the table edge. The old fingers turned white around the wood, but he kept them away from the violet crack.

Inside the prison, Jade unbolted the first feed pump. It was smaller than the filter, though its hose remained connected through the tank wall. She filled the pump chamber, closed its bypass valve, and sent it along the fifth wire.

JJ caught the pump while Yun-Jin kept the arrow straight.

The second feed pump began shaking before Jade touched its bolts.

The woman's removed fourth contact had left blood circulating through one side of the tank. With the extraction filter outside, nothing caught the loose gray particles. They gathered around the second pump intake and struck its wheel in uneven bursts.

"We need the filter running before this pump crosses."

JJ set the filter upright on Omina's floor. Yun-Jin held the violet thread with her bleeding palm while Omina fitted the first pump's outlet against the cartridge.

The fittings came from separate machines and carried incompatible threads.

Zunoder looked at the mismatch and tore a leather strip from his borrowed sleeve. He placed it on the table rather than touching either device.

"Wrap the joint twice and tighten it against the brass ridge."

JJ checked Omina for permission before taking the leather strip.

"The advice concerns plumbing, and the hand stays over there."

Omina nodded. JJ wrapped the joint while Yun-Jin tightened the clamp with the base of an arrowhead.

The filter filled. Gray fluid began moving through its mesh again.

Inside the tank, the particles around the second intake broke apart and entered the current.

Jade unbolted the final feed pump while filter pressure held.

The Reaper ripped itself off Erebos's spike. Three vertebrae stayed pinned to the table, leaving its robe hanging around an open section of spine. It used the missing space to turn farther than a living body could and drove its scythe toward the violet crack.

Ty caught the shaft under one arm. The blade reached the opening and shaved a strip from Yun-Jin's arrow.

Violet light sprayed across the tank and marked the gold rim.

Kieran wrapped Jade's tether around the second pump and pulled it through before the crack closed on the hose. JJ caught the pump from the other side and locked it beside the first.

Both feed lines now passed through the prison wall. The extraction hose followed beneath them. Jade kept each line separated with three pieces of the broken flute.

Kegaku held the remaining mouthpiece in his bleeding hand.

"Three braces left for eleven wires and one bad plan."

"The bad plan has pumps, which makes it better than staying."

Jade checked every connection. Fluid entered through both feed lines and returned through the filter. The tank gauges held their old pressure.

She wrapped the brass rail around the gold rim and hooked its end to the violet arrow.

"Pull until the rim reaches the crack, then wait for my count."

Yun-Jin drew the line tight from Omina's side. Ty pushed the tank while Erebos lifted its base on shadow. Kieran guarded the hoses with her blade and kept the damaged flute pieces from slipping.

The tank crossed the map room one foot at a time.

The Reaper pursued behind Ty. Its shortened spine let the robe fold under each step, yet the scythe lost no reach. Ty took the shaft across his ribs and shoved it toward the nearest blank helm.

Erebos closed black thread around the Reaper's wrist.

"You receive eleven seconds because she demanded the expense."

"I will enjoy reminding you that she spent your time."

The gold rim touched the crack where Yun-Jin's arrow held it open.

Ordinary time entered the tank through its leading edge.

The woman's suspended blood dropped through the water. Her back arched as every remaining contact pulled against skin that had forgotten how fast pain moved. The pressure needle jumped twice.

A pulse appeared on the lowest gauge. It began at sixty-eight, reached one hundred before Jade found the feed controls, and kept climbing while the tank remained caught between both rooms.

The woman's graft clenched around Kegaku's arm in the same rhythm. Each pulse pulled him closer to the glass until his damaged mouth touched its surface.

Jade lowered the first pump by one setting. The pulse slowed, though the pressure inside the tank dropped with it. She opened the second pump enough to replace the loss without forcing more fluid through the woman's bleeding contacts.

"The feeds must alternate because both together raise her pressure."

JJ knelt between the pumps outside and put one hand on each control.

"Call the changes because I can match whatever rhythm survives."

The woman lifted two fingers against the glass, confirming Jade's sequence. Her body had entered ordinary time, and she remained the person deciding how it was carried.

Jade watched the clock on the control box change from a fixed line to moving numbers.

"Forty-three seconds started when the blood fell."

Ty drove both sickles into the bridge and caught the Reaper's scythe between them. Erebos gathered every loose shadow around the trapped shaft. Kieran planted her gold blade across the corridor and burned the robe when it tried to slip around Ty.

One second passed before the Reaper broke the first sickle.

At four, its scythe cut through Erebos's black thread.

At seven, the blade entered Ty's ribs and hooked behind his spine.

The Reaper pulled him off the bridge at nine.

Kieran left the hoses long enough to catch Ty's wrist with Jade's tether. Erebos caught his ankle. Together they held him across the corridor while the scythe tried to drag him toward the collection road.

At eleven, the woman struck the tank glass.

Jade kicked the loosened base with both feet braced against the floor.

The gold rim crossed into Omina's room, taking the woman headfirst through the violet crack. The tank stopped at its widest point with half the glass still inside Erebos's prison.

The control-box clock showed thirty-two seconds beside the climbing pulse.

One feed hose caught beneath the Reaper's scythe as it pulled Ty backward.
