From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 885 - 885: Waddell Sent One Pound BackThe shelter owned eleven scales, and Waddell trusted three of them.
Two came from the kitchen. The third had spent years weighing detergent after someone discovered the supplier's half-full drums. Waddell made Caelin's aide put the same iron maintenance weight on all three, then rejected the kitchen scale that came up two ounces light.
Tyree watched from beyond the second fire door. The damp blanket remained around his arms, though his heat had dried most of it.
"If the road can carry that iron, it can carry part of me without risking anyone else."
Waddell lifted the maintenance weight from the platform scale with both hands. A raised mark beneath the chipped black paint identified it as one pound.
"A scale measures your weight after you arrive. It says nothing about what the road removes on the way."
"Then the road takes my hand first, and I learn what it costs before I follow."
"You already lost enough pieces to people who called the first loss a test. Keep your hand safely behind the door."
Tyree pulled the blanket tighter. He wanted to argue, but the guards were standing close enough to hear him volunteer himself and far enough away to survive if Waddell was right.
Caelin's aide cleared the last labels from the laundry wing. She copied every witness name onto a board beyond the fire door, leaving the scale, red tape, and tools blank. The camera operator recorded from the cafeteria end of the hall with the lens aimed below everyone's knees.
Waddell slid the good platform scale toward the bolted washing-machine cover. Its pan stopped six inches from the steel. He tied a cord to the scale frame and ran it back through the barrier, giving them a way to pull the whole thing clear.
"Open the cover only high enough for an object. If cloth, wire, or fingers come through first, drop it."
Both guards worked the lifting screws by half turns. The steel rose from the floor until the black wire became visible underneath. It lay in the spilled detergent with its loose end aimed toward the scale.
The opening stayed empty while the second hand on Caelin's watch made two trips around the face. The wire dragged once, stopped, and dragged again without reaching the pan.
At Switch Nine, Palla had tied the broken corner of the monitor tile to the same line.
The Reaper's hook had taken a triangle from the numbered face. The piece weighed less than Denna's ruined key, yet it refused the seam whenever Palla pushed with her good hand. Its painted side kept turning toward Earth while the broken edge caught beneath the old keeper notch.
"Turn the finished face forward before you push it through," Toman said from the bell controls. "That is how freight labels travel through a reader."
Palla stopped pushing and turned the corner around. "If your drainage office taught a prison road to read labels, I will add that to your repair ledger."
"Put it under unpaid work because that page has room."
Toman held the crank while Palla trapped the tile corner between Denna's melted key and the black wire. She wrapped it in a strip cut from the back of her bandage, leaving the number-four scratch uncovered.
Palla kept the corner out of the seam until the funeral engine returned. Jade raised the wrapped piece at the window, and Kegaku turned his head on the pressure bed before the rear platform reached them.
"One object out and one measured weight back means two losses. I consent to mine, but her pump is not mine to offer."
Inside the tank car, the graft's palm mouth opened against the brass return. The woman's voice came through it under the noise of the wheels.
"His heart feeds my tank, so the losses do not separate. This single exchange is mine as well. Close the route after the weight arrives."
Jade lowered the corner toward Palla. "If either rhythm fails, Toman releases the wire and Earth receives no answer."
Jade kept her damaged eye closed and braced one boot beside the floor collar. Ty stood across from her with both sickles hooked beneath the grille. The Reaper had moved from the maintenance door to the bottom of the speaking platform, close enough for its hook to reach the wire if it leaned.
"The corner is not a fare, and nobody's blood is tied to it," Jade said. "Let it cross without making a claim."
The Reaper rotated its hook until the inner curve faced her. Palla took that as the only answer it planned to give.
She pushed Denna's key against the keeper notch. Toman turned the crank backward by one tooth. The corner flattened against the seam, drawing Palla's bandage with it, then narrowed until the black wire pulled it out of her fingers.
The rear platform cleared Switch Nine without Kegaku's next heartbeat.
On the rear platform, his chest remained still beneath the straps. Inside the tank car, the unnamed woman forced her torn graft against the right return and failed to close the split. JJ wrapped both arms around the sleeve while black fluid ran between her elbows.
The corner left Sadle. On Earth, the black wire lifted from the detergent and placed the wrapped triangle on the scale pan. The needle jumped, swung past half a pound, and settled at six ounces.
Waddell pulled the scale away before the wire could follow. Caelin's aide read the number from behind the fire door and wrote it on the witness board, not on anything near the vent.
The tile corner carried no blood. Its bandage strip had been cut from a used wrap, but the stained part was missing. Waddell turned the object with laundry tongs until the scratched four faced the camera.
"Six ounces returned from Room Four, and nobody treats that as six ounces of human capacity."
Tyree looked at the maintenance weight in Waddell's hand. "Send the full pound, because a limit learned from scraps stays useless."
Waddell checked the corridor. Both steel barriers held. The scale cord was clear. Two guards watched the cover, while a third stood with the cutter bag where the wire could not reach it.
He wrapped the maintenance weight in red tape. No name, date, or promise went on the iron. Caelin's aide drew the same crooked line Waddell had used on the vent screw, then pressed the tape flat with the marker cap.
"One pound goes back, and this lane closes whether they accept it or refuse it."
Tyree stepped away from the door and wound the damp blanket twice around each forearm before Waddell had to order him.
Waddell set the weight on the scale first. The needle stopped at one pound. He lifted it with the tongs, held it beneath the steel cover, and waited for the child-sized glove.
Gray fingers came through around the black wire. They searched the empty scale pan, brushed the unmarked tile corner, and reached for the red tape. Waddell gave them the iron before they found a reason to prefer anything else.
The glove closed and folded around the weight. Its cloth palm stretched until the stitched seam showed, but it held. Waddell signaled the guards, and they lowered the steel cover while the wire dragged glove and iron into the vent.
At Switch Nine, the one-pound weight struck Denna's key hard enough to knock it from the keeper notch.
Palla caught the key with her damaged hand and lost the screwdriver. The iron rolled across the floor grille while the gray glove hung from it by three fingers. Ty pinned the weight beneath one sickle before it reached the open drainage collar.
The Reaper brought its hook down toward the red tape.
Jade met the shaft with both hands. The impact drove her damaged arm against the grille, and white gathered beneath her eyelid. She kept the eye shut while Ty kicked the weight toward Palla.
"You get no receipt from me because Waddell sent hardware, not a death."
The funeral engine crossed the first window. Erebos saw the red tape and sent shadow through the gap before his car reached the building.
Kieran caught his wrist with the wrapped flute. Erebos pulled her toward the window, using the moving train against her stance, but Kieran hooked one leg around the brake frame and drove the instrument under his thumb.
"You touch that road after me, and I break the flute across the hand you use."
"Breaking it gives Regaku another set of pieces to repair."
"Then I feed the pieces through your shadow and let him repair you with them."
Kieran twisted. Erebos lost the shadow before it reached the weight, and the funeral engine carried both of them beyond the switch-house wall.
Kegaku's heartbeat followed late. The lower gauge moved one mark and stopped. Through the tank-car window, Palla saw the unnamed woman's graft peel away from the pump sleeve with the split open to its wrist. JJ had to hold the return closed with her knee while she tied the arm against a brass brace.
Palla put the one-pound weight in her lap and left the wire alone.
"That is the last test Kegaku and the woman can pay for."
Denna came down from the speaking platform with the clinic lift count written across her sleeve. Seven patients had reached the street. Four remained above the lower car, one still attached to the hand pump.
"Then stop testing and tell me which side you intend to open."
Palla turned the weight over. Its raised number fit beneath her thumb. The old hinge had a counterweight cup behind the lower pair of bolts, painted blue when the city hid the prison line beneath its drainage map.
She set the iron into the cup. The hinge settled away from Earth's wire and pulled against the complete bracket on the far side of the seam.
The Room Four tile brightened while still facing Sadle. It showed one black bar, the leg of a desk, and the gray glove's empty place beside an open flute case.
Jade looked from the room to Denna. "You should stay with the patients because their way out still depends on your voice."
"I already chose them when my key burned, so stop offering me an easier excuse."
Ty moved beside Palla and put one sickle through the grille. "Earth stays guarded, while we use the stolen door to enter the room that keeps touching it."
Palla pressed Waddell's one-pound weight deeper into the counterweight cup. The Earth wire stayed slack beneath Denna's key. On the other side, the black bar lifted from the floor far enough for the old cell bolts to begin turning.
