From Wizard Apprentice to Conqueror of Myriad Worlds
Chapter 200 - 2: I Will Step Forward, Mo Ning Catches a Wizard’s Eye AgainChapter 200: Chapter 2: I Will Step Forward, Mo Ning Catches a Wizard’s Eye Again
Anya completely trusted his judgment. "So, Princess Phoebe’s information must be correct."
She began to rattle off the information she had gathered:
"The last intake had 312 new students in total. So far, 32 have condensed their first Spirit Ring and shed their newcomer status. In addition, 88 have died, 34 have been sent back, and 158 remain."
Only one year and four months after enrollment, the elimination rate was already approaching forty percent. The academy’s cruelty was plain to see.
The Noble Lady then shared another piece of worrying news:
"According to the information Princess Phoebe found out, at least 100 of the previous year’s new students already have a Spiritual Strength above 1.0."
"They’re that strong?"
Reina was taken aback.
Although 1.0 was the threshold, under normal circumstances, most new students needed to reach around 1.1 to successfully condense a Spirit Ring.
Meanwhile, the new student with the highest Spiritual Strength in their own year was still Sitt, who had supposedly just reached 1.02.
As the top-ranked Strong Person, Mo Ning’s Spiritual Strength had currently reached 0.96. He was considered to have climbed into the top tier, not far behind Sitt.
Comparing Spiritual Strength alone, the power gap between the two groups of new students was enormous.
The atmosphere in the stone pavilion grew somber for a moment.
A glint flashed in Mo Ning’s eyes, and a smile touched his lips. "It’s fine! If those guys show up, I’ll step forward."
The academy deliberately created conflict. If he didn’t step up, this year’s new students would surely be crushed.
For reasons of both sentiment and logic, he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
The "sentiment" was the camaraderie with his classmates. The "logic" was related to the assessments; according to what he had learned from notes and journals, leadership was also a dimension of the academy’s evaluations.
Anya, however, was worried. "Last year’s new students are very strong. If they prove to be too powerful, we can take a step back."
Mo Ning chuckled lightly. "If they really dare to provoke us, I already have a way to put them in their place."
He pointed at the steaming copper pot, seamlessly changing the subject. "Let’s eat."
Anya nodded obediently.
Mo Ning picked up his chopsticks, plucked a slice of forest boar hind leg, and took a bite. A smile appeared in his eyes. "Not bad."
The hind leg meat was naturally a bit tough, but Reina had figured out a unique way to prepare it, making it exceptionally tender and delicious. She was truly an excellent cook.
The Dazed Girl immediately beamed, her eyes crinkling into slits.
*****
1:00 PM.
Mo Ning held a copy of Divination Power Analysis and Calculation in his left hand. Passing through an archway of the Mysterious Secret Hall of the Quiet Forest, he leisurely strolled into the entrance of the No. 35 Biological Taming Center.
He had chosen to "work" here because of the ample free time it offered—as long as he took good care of the one Spiritual Creature assigned to him, he could spend the rest of his time as he pleased.
That’s right!
Just "one."
And he wasn’t solely responsible for it. His main role was to be an assistant to a Second Level Apprentice—in other words, to do odd jobs.
For other new students, though, just doing the odd jobs was enough to make them tear their hair out, because that big fella was extremely hard to handle.
But Mo Ning found it very relaxing.
The moment he stepped across the Boundary Line, the surrounding scenery abruptly changed.
A colossal, ring-shaped building over five hundred meters in diameter and thirty meters high entered his view. It looked as if it had been carved from a single block of white rock, giving it a rough, primeval appearance.
Giant beast heads protruded from the ring’s outer facade. Even from a hundred meters away, the sheer visual impact was breathtaking.
Beyond the Taming Center was a lush, green jungle—that was the activity area for the creatures being raised.
The first time he came here, the Apprentice guiding him had given him a stern warning: "Don’t go in there! If you die, you die for nothing."
Mo Ning walked briskly along the wide stone-paved road toward the Taming Center.
On both sides of the road, five-meter-high stone pillars stood at ten-meter intervals, each topped with a vividly carved beast head.
As he walked forward, the beast heads turned silently, keeping him in their sights at all times.
The first time he came here to report for duty, he had been startled by their eerie gazes.
Now, after a month, he was already used to it.
The guiding Apprentice had also told him that these were Stone Soul Beasts created by the academy, essentially a type of puppet.
If the Taming Center were ever invaded by external enemies, these Stone Soul Beasts would rapidly activate and fight the intruders to the death.
Mo Ning had read through Basic Puppet Design Introduction, a book he’d received as a reward from the academy, and learned how Stone Soul Beasts were made.
Their creation was quite peculiar: through a certain Witchcraft ritual, the soul of a creature killed in battle was fused with Spiritual Materials (mainly Spiritual Stones) to create a Stone Soul Beast.
A Witchcraft ritual might sound like the bloody and cruel practices of Ancient Wizards, but in reality, it wasn’t like that at all.
In the Era of Secret Divination, Witchcraft rituals had long been completely reformed, discarding the dregs of the Ancient Wizards and greatly increasing in efficiency.
At this moment, Mo Ning glanced sideways at a leopard-like beast head a few steps away and even had the leisure to greet it. "Balute, you don’t seem to be in a very good mood."
Every day when he passed by, he would casually use the [Eye of Truth] to build analytical models of them.
By capturing the most subtle changes in their expressions and accumulating enough data, he could now get a preliminary glimpse into their moods.
*CLICK!* A soft sound.
The leopard head opened its mouth in a yawn, and its pair of stone eyes slowly closed.
The plug-in immediately gave a notification:
[Target’s current mental state: Depressed, sullen. Comparison with historical data shows a worsening trend in depression.]
Mo Ning stopped in his tracks.
He thought for a moment, walked over to the spot below Balute, and gently patted the stone pillar, consoling it in a low voice:
