"Whoa, whoa, whoa... watch it, young lady," Faye said, her shoes grinding into the wooden floor as she took a single step forward. She kept her chin high, her hands hanging loose at her sides, but her eyes locked onto Jessie with a cold, sharp glare. "Ignoring the fact that we had a brief past and you are my friend’s big sister, don’t fucking call my girl a bitch. She is the mother of my children and our future children. Watch your fucking tongue if you don’t want to see my wrath," Faye warned.
She didn’t care that Jessie had threatened her life. What made her blood boil, what made her chest heave with heavy, furious breaths, was the simple fact that Jessie had called her girlfriend names.
Jessie chuckled, a dry and empty sound that rattled in her throat.
"Faye, look around you," Jessie said, sweeping her arm out toward the rows of armed men standing in silence. "You are not just inside a dangerous zone. You are outnumbered. Everyone here hates Alphas, and they will be glad to rip you into little chunks. Don, we should kill her. It will send a message to the Kings, and they will know that the Hija Dela Luna still lives."
Malo leaned toward Faye’s ear,
"Do you see the situational irony...?" he muttered.
"Shut up," Faye whispered back, not bothering to turn her head.
She kept her focus on the woman standing a few yards away.
"Before you kill me, I have a question," Faye said, raising her voice so it echoed off the walls of the hall.
"Why do you hate Alphas, Jessie? Alpha haters hate Alphas because they took something from them. You are an Oaklander. Your family has been here for generations. So what are you doing here?"
Jessie’s smile faded, her jaw tightening as she gripped the brim of her red-ribboned hat.
"You are not in the position to ask me questions, but I will answer since this is your last day," Jessie spat, taking a short step forward. "My girlfriend Stella lost her family to the Alphas. She was just a little girl when she witnessed her village being butchered."
Faye let out a soft sigh, rolling her shoulders back. She didn’t buy the noble act for a single second.
"So you are just here because of your girlfriend, who you almost cheated on last year? And I’m sure you must have cheated with other people behind her back..."
"We are in an open relationship," Stella said, stepping forward from the shadow of the red line.
Before anyone could make a move to stop her, Stella’s arm blurred. She snatched a black handgun straight from the holster of the cowboy standing next to her. Without pausing to aim, she raised the barrel and squeezed the trigger straight at Faye’s head.
A deafening pop shattered the silence of the room. Gunsmoke flared into the air.
Just when everyone thought the bullet was going to hit Faye’s chest, the loud metallic crack froze in place. The silver slug stopped instantly in midair, vibrating violently, hanging just an inch away from the fabric of Faye’s shirt.
"Sorry, Stella. You can’t kill her on our watch," Sasha said.
Sasha stood half a pace behind Faye, her knees bent slightly, her arm extended with her palm held open. Sweat beaded at her hairline, but her fingers remained perfectly still as she held the small silver bullet in place with her telekinesis.
Faye simply stood there, never once flinching, never even blinking as the deadly metal hovered against her chest. She had her chin tilted up, looking like someone who was aura farming.
"Uno reverse," Sasha said, her lips curving into a quick, sharp grin.
She flicked her wrist forward.
The air snapped. The bullet reversed direction instantly, shooting backward across the floor at twice the speed it was fired.
A dull impact thudded through the room. The bullet pierced Stella’s chest, hitting her heart before exiting through her back. It didn’t stop there. The silver slug continued flying through the air and struck another unknown person standing in the yellow line behind her, sending them crashing against the wall.
Stella’s eyes went wide. She gasped, her hands clutching wildly at the wet red patch blooming across her shirt, and immediately fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
"No... Stella!" Jessie screamed, dropping to her knees as she watched her girlfriend lose her life right on the dusty floor.
Everyone in the room was stunned by what had just happened. The air grew completely still.
Dozens of cowboys instinctively raised their rifles, aiming their guns directly at the small group in the center of the hall, but their hands were shaking too hard to pull the triggers. Nobody wanted to be the next one to fire a bullet that might come flying back into their own chest.
Stella lay motionless on the floor, her eyes staring blankly at the high ceiling.
"You are a witch," Don said, his voice cracking as he raised his own revolver with both hands.
"No, she is not a witch. But if any of you pull your trigger, you will suffer the same fate as that dead girl," Faye said, her voice dropping into a calm, dangerous rhythm.
There was no fear on her face. Not a single trace of hesitation marked her movements.
She walked straight toward Don, she reached out and casually grabbed the steel barrel of his raised gun with her bare hand.
The man was frightened. His hands were shaking so badly that the metal rattled in Faye’s grip.
He was a man who had taken so many lives throughout his years in the wasteland, yet now he was terrified for his own.
"Just release the gun if you don’t want to die," Faye said, staring down into his pale, sweaty face.
Don stared at her for two long seconds before his fingers loosened. He slowly let go, allowing the weapon to drop harmlessly into Faye’s grip.
"You won’t get away with this, Faye!" Jessie cried as she knelt on the floor, holding her dead girlfriend close against her chest, her hands stained red.
Jessie raised her tear-streaked face, glaring through the hair sticking to her forehead.
"Even if you kill every single one of us in this room, we are the followers of the Moon Wolf, and we are everywhere. Every single corner of this world. You and the Alphas cannot stop her from coming. They failed years ago, and she has been reborn. The Hija Dela Luna will fulfill her destiny and erase every single living Alpha, including your own Alpha!"
"That is not possible."
Faye stared directly at Jessie, holding her ground without an ounce of doubt in her eyes.
"You know why?"
She smiled, a slow, dangerous grin spreading across her face.
"Because I am the Moon Wolf, and I’m not going to kill a single Alpha for any of you."
