Lukas woke up slowly, his consciousness roused by a knock somewhere outside the bedroom.
He laid there for a second, waiting to see if it had been a dream or it would repeat.
Unfortunately, there was another knock again.
He groaned softly as he pushed himself up, swinging his legs off the side of the bed.
Beside him, Melody hadn’t moved, still sleeping with one arm tucked under the pillow.
He left her there and pulled on a shirt, moving quietly out of the bedroom and into the living room.
Akira’s door was closed as he passed it, and there was no sound from inside. She’d probably worked through most of the night on her components and had only recently gone to sleep.
He kept his footsteps light, making sure to not wake her.
There was another knock on the door.
Lukas walked across the living room to the door. There was only one person it was likely to be at this hour. He unlocked it and pulled it open.
Karrakas stood in the hallway, dressed in his signature suit. The tiefling’s face split into a grin the moment the door opened.
"Good morning," he said brightly.
Lukas looked at him for a moment, then stepped back to let him in.
"You know it’s early," he said, his voice still carrying the rough edge of someone recently pulled from sleep. "And that you’re waking me up with your knocking. What is good about this morning?"
"I did think the three of you were early risers," Karrakas said, stepping inside and glancing around the apartment. "My mistake."
Lukas yawned into the back of his hand. "We’re tired. We had the mission."
Karrakas turned to look at him, a slight frown on his face. "The mission was two days ago, wasn’t it?"
Lukas gave him a flat look. "Just accept the explanation without thinking too much about it."
Karrakas opened his mouth, thought better of it, and closed it again.
"Right," he said.
Lukas moved to the kitchen, filling a glass with water and leaning against the counter. "So what brings you here?"
"Oh, yeah." Karrakas clasped his hands in front of him, his earlier grin returning. "I wanted to ask when you’re planning to head back to the Red Desert."
"Now that the mission is done, it’s time to think about getting back to work." He chuckled. "Unless the three of you need a few more days of rest first."
Lukas swirled the water in his glass, thinking.
"I’ve been considering whether we should change locations entirely," he said.
Karrakas tilted his head. "What do you mean?"
"The Red Desert made sense when I needed to complete the class change quest. That’s done now." Lukas set the glass down. "There’s no reason we have to keep going back there if there are better options. Especially with that heat."
Karrakas laughed at that. "I was actually going to suggest the same thing. I’d held off because you guys seemed to be thriving in the desert, but now that it’s finished, it opens up other areas worth considering."
"What did you have in mind?"
"Another entry level location, of course," Karrakas said. "But more than the location itself, I’d like to use the time to properly teach the three of you what you need to know about choosing spatial gates and running dungeons independently."
"That includes information gathering, resource management, and knowing when to push and when to pull back."
"My time with you won’t last for much longer. When it ends, you’ll need to be able to handle things without me standing next to you."
Lukas nodded slowly. "That’s worth doing."
"I thought you’d agree."
"I’ll need to talk it over with my wives first though," Lukas said. "Before we commit to anything."
Karrakas nodded, rising from his seat. "Of course. When should I come back for an answer?"
"Give us two days," Lukas said.
"Two days it is." Karrakas straightened his jacket and moved towards the door.
"Stay for breakfast," Lukas said. "It’s the least I can do."
Karrakas paused at the door, then waved a hand with a grin. "I’ll pass. I think I’d rather spend the time trying to find a girlfriend of my own."
He glanced back. "Watching three married people be all loveydovey before breakfast is a bit much for a single man like me."
Lukas laughed.
Karrakas gave him a small salute and stepped out.
Lukas closed the door behind him, then turned back to the kitchen.
Since he was already up and awake, there was no point in going back to bed. He checked what ingredients they had on hand, and began putting breakfast together.
The aroma slowly began moving through the apartment like flying snakes, until it filled the whole house.
Melody appeared first.
She drifted out of the bedroom in her nightgown, hair loose, one hand pressed over a yawn. She blinked at him from the kitchen doorway.
"Good morning," she managed.
"Morning," Lukas said. "Karrakas came by."
That woke her up slightly. She moved to the counter and leaned against it. "What did he want?"
"We talked about moving to a new location on the Second Floor. I suggested leaving the Red Desert behind now that the class change quest is done." He glanced at her. "I told him I’d discuss it with you both first."
Melody nodded without hesitation. "I agree. That heat was unbearable."
A yawn came from the hallway before Akira did. She shuffled into the kitchen with her eyes half closed, hair escaping in every direction.
Lukas looked at her. The dark circles under her eyes were visible from across the room.
"You need more sleep," he said.
"I would be getting more sleep," Akira said, dropping into a chair, "if you weren’t cooking something that smells like that."
She turned to Melody. "What were you agreeing to?"
Melody opened her mouth to explain, but was interrupted by a knock on the front door.
"I’ll get it," Melody said, already pushing off the counter.
She padded out of the kitchen and across the living room, pulling the front door open.
She blinked.
Standing in the hallway was an impeccably dressed, seven foot tall man.
Baldwin.
