Chapter 244: Chapter 105 – The Hell on Christmas Eve 14
"He doesn’t look hostile."Matthew said to Claude, both on top of the roof. "He’s just... Sightseeing?" Matthew accompanied the Red Rider’s movements with the binoculars the soldier lent him.
"It reminds of Ffyr when you first brought her to the School." Claude answered.
"Do you know something about demons?" Matthew asked his priest professor.
"No. Nuilynn hasn’t faced as many threats from hell as Earth. Demonology is not something we priests of the Lady in Darkness study." Claude explained. "Why?"
"I don’t think that’s Paimon." Matthew confessed. "I never heard them referring to Paimon as the Red Rider. And demons love their titles. Also, a demon I’m friends with said Paimon had no interest in Earth."
"So you think that’s another demon?" Claude questioned him.
"Yeah. But I can’t find anything on the web about the Red Rider other than he’ll bring war to Earth." Matthew sighed.
"Who would know about this?" Claude thought out loud.
"Tylith. My demon friend. But she’s hiding from them, so I won’t risk her just to know if he’s Paimon or not. Whoever he is, he is powerful." Matthew said.
"We got word from the government." Michael said, popping on the roof and calling both of them. "They’ll send the cavalry. Mahmud will lead them personally." Michael explained while Matthew and Claude accompanied him downstairs.
Mahmud was the most powerful adventurer in the country, at level 66. Because of his power, Mahmud was given the rank of General in the army and given command of the elite Adventurers in the army.
Matthew could only remember how the Carrancas were slaughtered by Valerie’s simulacrum. How Vine, weakened on holy ground, almost killed him despite the aid of Mitzrael. How Beleth, possessing a human body, was immensely strong that even Aym had trouble fighting him.
Would Mahmud and the army be enough to defeat the Red Rider?
Perhaps if he was alone and he brought the full force of the army. But there wasn’t the case.
"Something is going on." One of the soldiers commented while passing them and turned on a TV.
A drone was sent by a news station to film the Red Rider. The image was close enough for them to make out his features.
"He’s quite handsome." One of the nurses commented out loud.
"Here we see the demon that was summoned in South City. The army has lost most of its forces in the city during the events of this night. Our specialists warn that this man is very dangerous. If you are in the city, it is advised you flee with haste while things are still peaceful." The news’ anchor said. "If you can’t leave the city, search for one of the safehouses the army has set around the city. The president has already moved the armed forces and General Mahmud is already leading his forces to South City to deal with the demon threat."
The Red Rider stared at the camera, trying to understand what he was seeing.
"He’s more peaceful than most demons." Michael commented.
"Powerful demons control their urges easier than lesser demons. But most still love indulging in them." Matthew, who spent two years in hell, knew very well.
Then a small red portal opened near the Red Rider. From inside, Samil came out and shot the drone down with a fireball as soon as he saw it.
"Samil." Matthew gnarled the name.
"We got a glimpse of one of the Impiomancers that summoned the demon?" The news’ anchor asked into his ear piece. "We’re still waiting for confirmation from the authorities."
While the TV kept making sound and the news formulated theories about what was going on, Matthew went to the window and looked outside. They were far from Obongo Park where the drone was filming the Red Rider.
"You hate waiting, don’t you?" The giant Geovanna, Matthew’s hand-to-hand combat master smiled at him, gentle as ever. "Even when we’re sparing. You’re always impatient."
"I am." Matthew agreed. "I want to go there. I want to face him. But I’m also scared as hell. I know that, if I go, I’ll die. It’s... It’s hard to be in this position."
"I felt that many times. Everytime my students go out into dungeons on their own. I know that we have to let them fight alone, but part of me always wants to be with them and help." The kind professor confessed.
"We have a new drone in the sky. We’ll keep it far from the demon to keep it safe, but it seems that the Impiomancer and the demon in red are discussing something we can’t quite hear." The news’ anchor said.
"They don’t seem friendly with each other." Erin commented.
"Wait, they’re opening another portal." Mia exclaimed pointing at the TV.
The news’ anchor said the same thing. This time an army of Wechuges came out with Mahahas on the front.
Mahaha was imp sized demons with blue skin. They were thin and strong humanoids, with very long arms and fingers. Each finger also had a very long claw. They had long messy black hair and seemed to be balding which made their hair resemble hay.
"Cocytus demons." Matthew sighed. "It seems Samil only used the demons from Violentia as sacrifices."
"How long do we have until Mahmud’s forces arrive in the city?" Faralynn questioned a soldier.
"The air force is already aware and will carpet bomb the whole park. But Mahmud will take some hours to get here." The soldier replied.
True to the soldier’s words, sounds of fighter jets rang in the distance. From the window they could see them approaching, but also they could see the Red Rider flying on his winged horse matching their speed.
The jets shot their cannons at the demon, but he dodged the fire with ease. Using his huge sword he cleaved one of the jets in the middle.
While the fighter jets needed a lot of room to steer, the Red Rider used much less to turn around. While the pilots did their circle flows following what they knew about air combat, a man riding a winged horse had completely different maneuvers.
A second jet had its wing cut out and flew directly into the city below.
A third jet managed to hit him with a missile, but the Red Rider just flew out from the smoke in the sky using his sword to fell that plane as well.
"They’re being massacred up there." Michael said.
Ffyr held Matthew’s arm and shook her head, feeling that he wanted to go help them.
"Not yet." She said.
"Hey, guys." Paula entered the room they were watching the news in. "The surgery went well and Ness just woke up."
Matthew, Ffyr and Michael went to talk to her.
Her head was shaven and banded after her craniotomy. She was wearing only hospital robes and was in the ICU, with Sebastian and Eric.
"Paula told me what’s going on." She smiled at them before anything. "And I’m fine."
"Good to know." Matthew held her hand.
"It’s nice, for a change, me being the one in this bed." Vanessa teased him. Despite her joke, her voice was very weak.
Matthew laughed.
"Given what’s going on outside, I think he’ll be there too before the night ends." Michael joked.
"Let’s pray that it doesn’t happen." Vanessa sighed. Just talking was enough to make her tired.
"We should let you rest." Michael said, pulling Matthew and Ffyr out the room.
"Matt." Claude came to find them. "The army is calling every adventurer over level 35 to rally at the Ryvylin Tower. They want to establish a base of operations there while Mahmud isn’t here."
"Why there?" Matthew asked.
"It’s the only place in the city center where we already have a defensive position." Geovanna explained, while taking a pair of metal gloves from her inventory.
She was wearing cargo pants with gray camouflage, a chain mail shirt under a thick black jacket, metal bracers and greaves.
Claude came by with his black priest robe with the Lady in Darkness’ symbol on it, a light blue flame. He carried a lantern as a weapon and a sword on his waist.
Lydia was wearing a purple long dress with a deep cleavage. A small jacket covered her shoulders and arms. Combat battle boots adorned her legs. Her bare thigh held her wand in a holster like a gun.
Mia and Faralyn were going too, both armed like they usually did.
Faralynn told Karynn to consecrate the hospital to weaken any demon who tried to attack it. Karynn accepted the responsibility with pride.
"My lady." Karynn stopped Faralynn before she left. "If you find my father in there, bring him home, please?"
"Of course, Karynn." Faralynn smiled at her. "And thank you for helping us today." Faralynn complimented her subordinate.
The six of them got in two cars and drove to the Tower of Ryvylin.
All the way, Matthew kept his eyes on the sky, where the Red Rider destroyed the airforce.
"This is going to be hard."
