Chapter 246: Chapter 107 – The Hell on Christmas Eve 16

"What’s the plan?" Matthew gathered everyone in the lobby.

"Berith said he’d not fight. So I guess we have a chance after all." Catherine gave them a sad smile.

"We could abandon our position." The senior military office present said.

"No. We have a chance to drive the Red Rider away. I say we try our luck." Matthew said.

"We don’t have the men to do it." The soldier protested.

"How long until reinforcements arrive?" Geovanna asked.

"3 hours." The soldier operating the radio informed.

"We can’t hold it for 3 hours." Catherine said.

"We just need to defeat their king." Matthew interjected. "I can slip through their defenses and take the king out."

"Can you do it?" The senior soldier asked.

"We can." Matthew asserted, looking at Faynn who nodded at him. "You just need to hold long enough to give us an opportunity to take him out."

The soldier looked at the others and their faces showed faith in the young man.

"All right. I’ll position my men." He said and walked back to his men waiting behind him.

"I still have people on the upper floors." Catherine said. "They’re ready already."

"We’ll take care of the front door." Geovanna said, referring to Matthew’s party.

Berith was at the top of a building watching the intersection where the Tower of Ryvylin stood. With just a movement of his hands his troops understood what they were supposed to do.

"Pawn to D4." He chuckled to himself.

A troop of mahahas marched forward. Very different from how Lenore led her troops, the Rider of War had complete obedience from the unruly demons. They marched at a steady pace even when the adventures perched into the windows of the building started to shoot their guns at them.

"I see..." He smiled seeing how his demons were intercepted by gunfire and met at the earthen wall that the gnomes erected earlier. "Let’s try bringing in the knight."

With another hand movement, a trio of Wechuges marched forward positioning themselves behind the mahahas assaulting the wall. The larger demons created ice spikes from thin air and threw them at the adventurers shooting at them from upstairs.

That’s when Lydia got on top of the wall and infused herself with the spirit of fire she always carried with her. Her eyes were taken by a fiery light, she grew red squirrels ears on her head and a big squirrel tail from her back.

She started to shoot fireballs at the Wechuges attacking the men upstairs.

"Attacking with your bishop so soon?" Berith smiled and moved his hand again.

Another wave of mahahas attacked the wall focusing on the position Lydia was.

A group of armed soldiers met them at the wall shooting the little demons down. When they managed to climb the defenses, Geovanna met them with powerful punches.

"Good use of your tower... But I warned you not to do it..." Berith shook his head when he saw Matthew sneaking out of his base in shadow form. "You really thought I wouldn’t notice your queen moving?"

With a hand movement he sent a troop of mahahas to meet Matthew in the middle of his sneaking.

Matthew found himself surrounded by lesser demons and was forced to abandon his shadow form to protect himself. Using both his sword he carved a path in the middle of the bunch.

"Now let’s see if you’ll retreat your queen, or allow her to be trapped." Berith smiled.

A wave of pure holy mana emanated from the tower cast by Claude and weakened all the demons around the building.

"You’re really moving your black bishop when your queen is about to be trapped? You’re really going for the Scholar’s?" The Red Rider laughed.

With another hand movement a Marilith slithered forward rushing against the wall where Claude was hiding behind.

"Time to move my queen." He smiled.

Mia and Fralynn opened fire with their laser beams and arrows against the half snake demon.

Meanwhile Matthew pushed forward in the direction of the Wechuge wearing the crown. However, his pathway was blocked by a huge humanoid creature made of ice. An Ice Golem.

Matthew ignited his blades in unholy fire and covered the field in darkness. Fighting just like Faynn, going in and out of the shadows and using the darkness to his advantage.

"You’re really taking my rook?" Berith laughed. "But now you’re trapped."

With another hand movement he ordered the Matilith to come back and attack Matthew.

"Now your queen is trapped. What are you going to do?" Berith smiled.

With a punch of the ice golem Matthew was sent back sliding on the floor. Its ice was melting from Matthew’s attacks, but it was far from harmed.

Matthew knew that golem had a control core inside of them and the only way to destroy the golem was to destroy the core. But passing through layers of thick ice was hard, even with the help of fire spells.

That’s when Ffyr came flying in the sky and made rain fire over the ice golem and the surrounding demons.

"Bringin in your knight won’t help. Your queen is already trapped." Berith commented to himself, thinking out loud to put his ideas in order.

The Marilith reached Matthew and tried to cut him in half with her blades.

Ffyr was then forced to retreat when the mahahas on the ground started to shower her with arrows and icicle spells.

Surrounded by miasma and spreading the black mist around, Matthew now saw himself facing the ice golem and the Marilith on his own.

He switched his sword with his gun and shot down a couple of mahahas who tried to get him from the side. Then he immediately melted into the shadows to avoid an attack from the ice golem. In the next moment he resurfaced trying to backstab the Marilith and failing.

Matthew was fighting desperately now on his own trapped behind enemy lines.

Berith opened a smile.

"This was fun, but it’s over now." He said.

"Check." Two voices rang in his ear at the same time. One male and one female.

"What?" The Red Rider exclaimed looking to the sides. "Belial?!"

"Look at you king." Belial’s voice said.

Berith only now took his eyes from the front of the battle and from Matthew to look at his rearguard.

The Wechuge carrying the golden crown was being attacked by Faynn who sneaked even from the sight of a demon duke to backstab the enemy’s king.

"You can’t be here." Berith gnarled at the disembodied voice of the demon king.

"We are not, but we’re watching. Careful now. It’s a checkmate in two." Belial said in a playful voice. "You always lose sight of the whole board, don’t you?"

"Shut up." He said while ordering troops to retreat from the front and help the king who was desperately defending itself from the attacks of the elven spy.

"Wrong move." Belial chuckled.

Ffyr flew in from the sky, dodging the attacks of the troops below her and sent two fiery blades of air to cut the king’s arms.

"Checkmate." Belial said resolutely and an army sniper atop of the tower shot a bullet imbued with holy mana by Claude taking the king out. "Two knights and a rook. And you kept your eyes on the queen." Belial laughed.

"Shut up." Berith roared. "Why are you watching anyway? And how are you even talking?"

"The enemy’s queen. He’s mine. Now fulfill your part of the deal and stop your soldiers." Belial said in a threatening tone.

Berith took a deep breath and moved his hand, making all his demons stop.

A roar came from the tower when the soldiers and adventurers realised they had won.

Matthew breathed deeply. Surrounded by demons, he didn’t dare to put his guard down. But also he didn’t risk attacking or running away. So he just stood there.

Berith came down flying to meet Matthew and landed with his horse close to him. His eyes immediately saw Belial’s dark blade on Matthew’s hand. He smiled. That was how Belial was able to communicate with him.

"Demon slayer." The Red Rider said while dismounting from his horse and resting his enormous sword against the animal. "You got powerful eyes on you."

"Berith." Matthew greeted the duke. "We won. Leave the country."

"I shall." He responded, gesturing to his troops to retreat. "I’ll just have to meet with your king to secure a safe passage for my army and me."

"Where?" Matthew asked, finally relaxing his posture.

"Anywhere. Preferably somewhere fun. Where do you suggest? Which kingdom do you, Belial’s chosen, wish to see fall into war?" The Red Rider asked with a sadistic smile.

"The kingdom of Vine." Matthew smiled.

Berith laughed out loud.

"To wage war against Ira!" He kept laughing. "That would be fun. Fighting Vine in battle..." He rubbed his chin considering it. "But I’ve just got to the prime and I don’t intend on leaving. So... Tell me, demon slayer, where on Earth should I go?"

"I don’t want you waging war on Earth. But if you must wage war... The Arctic was taken by invading forces of another planet. Ice trolls now control a huge part of it. Perhaps you could try your hand there?" Matthew thought quickly. If he couldn’t get rid of such a powerful demon, could he at least direct him to fight against humanity’s enemies?

"I see." Berith smiled. "Clever. I’ll tell you something. I’ll consider it. I’ll uphold the terms of our wager and leave this kingdom alone. And let’s see where I should go from here."
