Chapter 248: Chapter 109 – Miracle
"What did you do?" Tylith asked Father Oluwafemi with wide eyes while the crowd stared in awe.
Some fell to their knees in prayer. Some cried. Others kept looking curious about what was going on. A part, more skeptic, started to doubt the veracity of what they just saw.
"It wasn’t me, child." The priest said, also surprised.
"You knew this was going to happen!" Tylith accused him, squeezing Michael’s hand on hers.
"I didn’t. I just thought I could convince the people that you’re not a threat to them." Oluwafemi explained.
"I don’t understand." Tylith almost fell to her knees, but Michael held her.
"Let’s take her home." Michael said, while holding her.
The crowd was so distracted by the miracle that happened in front of them, that they paid almost no attention to Lenore. Only a few directed their words to Matthew who was escorting Lenore out the cathedral, asking if she too was an angel.
For their luck, not many there knew what an erinyes was.
The crowd opened a way to them as Michael gently guided Tylith into his car. Oluwafemi, Matthew and Lenore walked closely and entered the vehicle quickly as songs of praise started to be sung.
While Michael drove away, part of the crowd walked up the stairs to the cathedral’s front door and touched and kissed its pillars, each asking for their own miracles.
Once the car was far enough, Matthew turned to Tylith.
"Did you really turn into an angel? Or was it your spell?" He asked, trying to sound gentle.
"This wasn’t me." She answered, hugging herself. "Even my mana changed." She was clearly scared.
"Did Yahweh really turn you into an angel?" Lenore asked almost in a mocking tone.
"She did repent for her sins. Weren’t you asking Him for protection?" Oluwafemi questioned her.
"I... Was. But I wasn’t asking to... Change..." Tylith’s voice trembled as she felt her new feathers with her hand.
"Didn’t you?" The priest questioned her again.
"I didn’t want to be afraid anymore! I did not ask for... This!" She gestured at herself.
"This is His answer to all your prayers, my child." Oluwafemi patted her head. "You might not understand it now, but you will. Have faith in Him."
Tylith just nodded.
Michael left the priest and Lenore at his hotel. Lenore hugged Oluwafemi suggestively while she said her goodbye to Matthew.
"Are you sure about it? She’s strong and can command your emotions." Matthew asked Oluwafemi.
"I am. The nunnery will take good care of her." He smiled at Matthew.
"Be careful. She’s not like Tylith." Matthew said.
"It’s ok. We’ll handle her." The priest eased Matthew’s worry and said his goodbyes to the others.
Michael took Matthew home next, who patted Tylith’s head, before leaving.
"You look much better like this." He smiled.
"I look hot no matter what." She chuckled for a second, but her worries crept back in her face quickly.
"You’ll be alright. I’ll stop Samil." Matthew reassured her.
"Thanks, Matt. Really. For everything." She said while holding his hand.
"Take care of her." Matthew told Michael before entering his house.
"I too... Think you look great like this." Michael blushed while driving.
Tylith looked at him with a gentle smile.
"You’ve always been so kind. It must be clear now to you that I was only using you for shelter. I won’t sleep with you. I won’t love you." Tylith was blunt. "Then why do you keep coming for me? Why are you still here? I am... I was a demon. It doesn’t make sense."
Michael chuckled and held her hand.
"At first, of course I knew you were only flirting with me because you wanted a place to sleep. But I thought: ’Why not? Perhaps I can score a hot demon lady.’" Michael was honest. "But the more time passed I realized you were just doing what you thought you needed to do. I started to see the woman behind the succubus. The woman who learned to use her own body as a weapon. A woman who was scared of feeling anything real. That recoiled under gentle touches. That tried her hardest to understand kindness that she had never felt before."
Tylith looked at Michael wide eyed.
"Then I found myself caring for you. And I eventually fell in love with you." He confessed.
Tylith started to cry, squeezing his hand with both of hers, while his other hand steered the car.
"To tell you the truth. I did ask Yahweh to give me the power to reciprocate all the kindness I received here. The power to protect not only myself, but you and your sister who opened your home to a demon, despite your own trauma. To help Matthew who keeps putting his life on the line for me. Even that kid. Marcus." Tears ran down her face. "I can’t believe how strong he is." Tylith hid her face on his shoulder, wetting the sleeve of his shirt with tears.
Michael parked the car and hugged her.
"Are you mad at God for turning you into an angel?" He asked as he caressed her hair.
"No. I’m scared of what it means. I don’t want to go to heaven. I want to stay here with everyone." She confessed. "I’m scared that Yahweh has pardoned me, in spite of my sins. I’m scared of what this means. Of what he expects of me."
"You don’t need to go anywhere. You don’t need to do anything. He would have said something, if he expected something in return." Michael said.
Tylith just held him stronger and kept crying on his shirt.
Michael placed a kiss on her hair and let her cry.
Feeling the gentleness of his touch, Tylith looked up to his face and stared into his green eyes. In a hurry, she grabbed his face with both hands and pulled him to her, placing a kiss on his lips.
For the first time in her life she didn’t do it out of lust or survival. She wasn’t trying to have a good time or to use him to her interests. She just wanted to kiss him. To feel his warmth. To make him happy.
Michael responded just as eagerly.
"You are no fun." Lenore complained as Father Oluwafemi denied all her advances.
"You know you could easily control me with your spells." He said.
"I promised Matthew I wouldn’t." She explained, looking out the window.
"Are you that scared of him?" The priest asked.
"To tell you the truth? No." She laughed. "But when we were in hell he showed me something I never saw before."
"What?"
"Love." Lenore turned to the priest with a smile.
"You’re also curious about it?" He asked her, sitting on the bed.
"You want to turn me into an angel too?" Lenore mocked him.
"No. I just promised I would guide lost souls to His grace." The priest answered.
"I’m not lost." Lenore protested. "I’m not a scared little songbird like that succubus. I’m a general. I command troops into war." She said proudly.
"Yet... Here you are. Hiding on Earth from your masters in hell." Oluwafemi smiled.
"Shut up." Lenore blushed.
"You’re ok living in the nunnery?" Oluwafemi changed subjects, since she didn’t seem open to talk about her feelings yet.
"Yeah. As long as you don’t burn me with holy mana." Lenore dismissed him. "I’ll just fly away when I get bored."
"Alright then. I’ll make some calls then to set it up. You can order room service if you want to eat anything. The church is paying." He smiled as he grabbed his cellphone.
That night, Matthew met Faralynn at her place. Karynn cooked a meal for them. Despite her trying to hide, there was a deep sadness around the priestess.
"You cook very well." Faynn tried to cheer her up, saying something nice for a change.
"Thank you." Karynn said as she washed the dishes while the other ate.
Kazan was still missing. So were Tina and Helen’s parents. They knew they were not dead, as Erin managed to contact them through her dreams, since she leveled up enough to become a Somniomancer now.
However, they were not in one of the hells as they thought. Though they did pass through Cocytus after they were raptured by the gate that summoned Berith, they were soon transported to another place.
It seemed to be another planet. A planet of eternal darkness covered in a luminous forest of giant fungi.
As they fought tooth and nail to survive in that hostile environment, Matthew and the others did everything in their power to find them.
That evening, Faralynn had called Erin, Mia and Helen as well for them to discuss their next steps.
As they ate, they talked about their alternatives and the findings of their research.
At some point during dinner, Matthew’s phone rang. An unknown number.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Mr. Lordstone? It is me, Lily Anne, secretary of Mr. Wisefoot from the Black Tower. Do you have some time to talk?"
