Chapter 171: Chapter 171: Misunderstanding
The convoy soon turned onto a side road, gradually picking up speed.
"We’re saved at last."
Cloud Fish and the others let out a collective sigh of relief.
Long Ming, however, leaned against the window, gazing outside.
Time passed slowly as the morning sun spilled across the land.
Xiaoqi and the others were growing drowsy. They could barely keep their eyes open, but sleep wouldn’t come. Every so often, they were jolted from their seats by a large pothole in the road.
Just then, an urgent voice crackled over Xiaoqi’s wireless radio.
"Emergency situation. Roadblock ahead..."
"What’s the situation?"
"Did we run into robbers?"
...
Xiaoqi and the others were instantly wide awake.
Long Ming was startled as well and quickly leaned out to look.
In the distance, a simple iron fence had been set up as a roadblock. Several men in combat gear, armed with submachine guns, stood guard.
Just then, Wu Zheng’s irritated voice came over the radio.
"They’ve got some nerve, blocking our path."
"Captain, it looks like a checkpoint set up by Aks Shelter City."
"Hmph. They act like they own this road. Ram through it."
"Yes, sir!"
Following Captain Wu Zheng’s order,
The convoy accelerated, charging toward the checkpoint.
Seeing the convoy charge at them, the soldiers on guard scrambled out of the way.
CRASH~
The barricade was instantly smashed apart.
The soldiers quickly grabbed their communicators to report.
"Captain Dan’er, a convoy just charged through."
...
The convoy hadn’t driven much farther when a second checkpoint appeared.
Wu Zheng ordered in a cold voice,
"Keep going. I’d like to see who dares stop us."
"Yes, sir!"
A chorus of voices replied.
Just then, Long Ming spotted something. On a service road to the right of the roadblock, a light tank was moving onto the main road. His expression changed, and he shouted to Xiaoqi.
"Tell them to stop, now! They have a tank."
Xiaoqi’s face paled when he heard Long Ming. He quickly grabbed his radio and yelled into it.
"Captain Wu Zheng, stop! Now! There’s a tank up ahead!"
"Halt."
Hearing Xiaoqi, Wu Zheng immediately gave the order.
The convoy gradually slowed to a halt.
Wu Zheng and his subordinates then jumped down from their troop carriers.
"Let’s get out and see what’s going on,"
Long Ming said to Xiaoqi.
Xiaoqi and the others then followed Long Ming out of the vehicle.
The opposing force drove the tank in front of the roadblock, positioning it sideways to block the path. They swiveled the turret to aim at the convoy, making it clear they weren’t letting anyone through.
Long Ming looked up, his gaze traveling past the roadblock to the right. In the distance, he could see a sanctuary city of modest size.
Faint sounds of explosions could be heard coming from the city.
Captain Wu Zheng led his men to the roadblock. He glared at the soldiers blocking their path and bellowed.
"We’re with the Mountain City Mountain forces! You dare obstruct us and interfere with our mission? Are you trying to make an enemy of Mountain City Mountain?"
"No, no! This is all a misunderstanding. I’m the captain of the guard here, Dan’er."
A middle-aged man with dark skin, a gaunt frame, and prominent cheekbones ran over, a submachine gun in his hands. He replied in a panic.
’How could they dare offend Mountain City Mountain? Every sanctuary city in this region survives on handouts from them.’
"Then why did you stop us?"
Wu Zheng demanded, staring at Captain Dan’er.
"Well, you forced your way through our checkpoint without identifying yourselves, didn’t you?"
"Hmph. Do you own this road? Do we need to report to you?"
"Haha, no, of course not. Um... may I ask what the Mountain City Mountain forces are doing here?"
Captain Dan’er asked, a troubled look on his face.
"Do I have to tell you what our mission is? Are you trying to spy on military intelligence?"
Wu Zheng demanded coldly.
"I wouldn’t dare."
"If you wouldn’t dare, then get out of our way."
"Sir, there’s a problem with the road ahead. You should take the service road on the left back to the main road."
Dan’er swallowed hard, speaking with great difficulty.
"What’s wrong with the road ahead?"
"It collapsed. In short, it’s impassable. You should get going."
"Hmph."
Wu Zheng snorted, then turned and walked back.
He issued an order to his subordinates.
"Everyone, back in the vehicles! We’re taking the left service road."
Long Ming, Xiaoqi, and the others climbed back into the armored personnel carrier.
Xiaoqi then asked Long Ming, puzzled.
"What the hell are those guys playing at? Insisting we take a detour."
"I heard explosions coming from the sanctuary city just now. If I’m not mistaken, there’s likely a coup happening in that city."
Long Ming calmly shared his speculation with Xiaoqi and the others.
’Those men probably don’t dare to offend Mountain City Mountain, but they’re also afraid we’re here to intervene.’
"No way?"
Xiaoqi and the others were startled.
"It’s not that surprising. The appearance of the wristbands gave many people power, so of course they can try to overthrow the existing order. In a way, Mountain City Mountain’s decision to regulate the wristbands might not be such a bad thing."
"Makes sense."
"But it has nothing to do with us,"
Long Ming replied indifferently.
"Mm-hmm."
Xiaoqi and the others nodded in agreement.
"By the way, how far are we from our destination?"
"Not far. We’ll be there in another seven or eight hours."
"Good."
Long Ming nodded.
...
「At dusk.」
The convoy drove to the outskirts of Ocardo Sanctuary City.
Through the window, Long Ming saw a square-shaped sanctuary city in the distance, its outer perimeter fortified by a massive stone wall.
Long lines of vehicles snaked toward the city’s entrance checkpoint.
Countless vehicles wanted to enter the city.
"Wow, look at all these vehicles trying to get in. Ocardo Sanctuary City must be making a fortune."
Cloud Fish exclaimed.
"It’s all about its prime location right now. Mountain City Mountain and other sanctuary cities all have to pass through here. I bet it’s packed to the gills inside,"
Xiaoqi remarked with a sigh.
"Every advantage has its disadvantage. If a monster tide hits, it’ll be the first to get hammered,"
Long Ming interjected with a cold analysis.
"Er, I guess that’s true."
Xiaoqi and the others were taken aback, the realization dawning on them.
"Enough about that. Are we going into the city now?"
Long Ming looked at Xiaoqi and asked.
"No. The Mountain City Mountain forces aren’t inside the city. They’re encamped in the western suburbs of Ocardo Sanctuary City."
Xiaoqi explained.
"I see."
Long Ming nodded slightly.
Just then, the convoy began to turn onto a side road.
...
------------------------------------------
「Ocardo Sanctuary City—Western Suburbs」
Rows of military tents stretched into the distance. In the center of the encampment stood a massive tent.
Numerous elite soldiers stood guard outside the massive tent.
This tent served as a temporary command center, filled with various electronic communication devices, a sand table, and other equipment.
Qiansha was seated in the main chair, resting his chin on one hand and sitting sideways.
Qian Wei, Qian Hai, Qian Lan, and the others were gathered around the sand table. Before them lay a map dotted with small flags.
Each flag marked the location of a scouted ruin.
Just then, an NCO respectfully reported to the group.
"Latest intelligence: all of our reconnaissance drones lost contact after flying over the ruins of Base No. 14 on the outer perimeter."
Hearing this, Qiansha gave a grand wave of his hand and declared domineeringly,
"I’m the leader here, so it’s only right that I take on the biggest burden. I’ll take the ruins of Base No. 14 on the outer perimeter. That way, I can also investigate why our recon drones lost contact."
"In that case, I’ll take Ruin No. 7."
Hearing Qiansha, Qian Wei’s brow tightened. He immediately stood and selected a ruin.
"I won’t argue with you. No. 11 is fine for me."
Qian Hai immediately claimed another ruin.
"I’ll take Ruin No. 8."
...
Qian Lan and the others quickly reached out to claim their own ruins.
By the time Luoxue had a chance to speak, the ruins on the map had already been carved up.
They had taken all the larger-scale sites for themselves.
Seeing this, Jing Chuan’s expression turned grim. He lowered his voice and said to Luoxue,
"This is outrageous. We were supposed to discuss how to divide up the scouted ruins, but they just went and snatched them all up."
"Let it go. It doesn’t matter which one we get."
Luoxue had no intention of arguing with Qiansha and his group.
’Of course, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to argue, but that arguing would be pointless.’
After hearing Luoxue, Jing Chuan could only suppress his anger.
