Chapter 182: Chapter 182: The Search

「Several days later.」

Deep within the Bukeao Mountain Range.

Soldiers clutching machetes hacked away at the thorny vines and dead branches blocking their path.

Luoxue led five hundred soldiers, searching for the location of the ruins in the dense forest.

The sky gradually darkened.

Just then, Jing Chuan walked up to Luoxue’s side and spoke.

"Luoxue, it’s getting late. We should stop and rest."

"Alright."

Luoxue nodded slightly in agreement.

Hearing Luoxue’s words, Jing Chuan immediately shouted to the group.

"Everyone, make camp and rest here!"

"Yes!"

The soldiers all stopped to rest.

「Under the veil of night.」

Campfires were lit one by one.

Long Ming, Luoxue, and the others gathered around a fire for warmth.

The temperature during the day was tolerable, but as soon as night fell, the forest became damp and cold.

Long Ming stretched and pulled a pack of compressed biscuits from his backpack.

When Luoxue saw this, she picked up a can of beef and handed it to Long Ming.

"Here, eat this instead."

"Thanks."

Long Ming took it and opened the can.

"This deep in the mountains... this is no place for people. And we’ve been searching all day with nothing to show for it."

Jing Chuan stretched and complained with a sigh.

Hearing this, Long Ming looked thoughtfully at Luoxue and asked.

"Luoxue, just searching blindly like this isn’t going to work. Can’t we call in a satellite to take some pictures or something?"

"What do you think? If we had satellites, would we need to go to all this trouble?"

Luoxue looked up at Long Ming.

"Huh? What about Mountain City Mountain’s satellites?"

"We’ve lost contact with all of them. If I’m not mistaken, they were probably destroyed when we docked with this civilization, or maybe they just didn’t transfer over."

"Damn... what kind of terrifying Power would it take to do that?"

"I don’t know. The point is, the satellites are gone. So, in a way, we’re completely in the dark now."

"Don’t we have any backup satellites?"

"No. You can probably guess what things are like in Mountain City Mountain right now without me having to spell it out. It’s a struggle just to keep things running, so how could we possibly divert resources to that? Besides, even if we had a backup, we couldn’t launch it that quickly. The environment here is different from what we’re used to. The atmospheric height, the magnetic field, and other factors have all changed. The probability of failure from a rash launch would be extremely high."

"That makes sense. So, you haven’t thought of other ways to explore?"

Long Ming asked thoughtfully.

"Of course we have. Not long after we entered this world, Mountain City Mountain sent out fighter jets and helicopter gunships for reconnaissance. But we lost contact with most of them. The intel they sent back was very limited."

Luoxue explained calmly.

"Sigh... This situation doesn’t feel very good."

As he said this, Long Ming raised his wristband, opened the mission log, and glanced at the displayed task.

Mission: Fire of Civilization

Objective: Break the shackles, defeat the darkness, and ignite the fire of civilization.

Reward: Survival

Failure: Annihilation

"There’s nothing we can do. For now, we can only take it one step at a time."

Luoxue said, her expression serene.

"Yeah."

Long Ming stared at the burning fire, lost in thought.

「Three days later.」

Long Ming and Jing Chuan were deep in a dense part of the jungle, searching for traces of the ruins.

"Dammit, our luck is the worst. We’ve been searching for days and haven’t found a damn thing."

Jing Chuan cursed, extremely irritated.

"That’s normal. You can’t rush a search like this."

Long Ming replied calmly.

"Sigh! If only we were equipped with advanced recon drones, we wouldn’t be so reactive."

Jing Chuan sighed.

Hearing Jing Chuan, Long Ming asked with great curiosity.

"Jing Chuan, there’s something I’m curious about."

"What is it?"

"I’ve seen that the other legions have pretty good equipment, some even have helicopter gunships and stuff. How come our gear is so basic?"

"Tch, what’s so strange about that? We may all be troops from Mountain City Mountain, but we report to different superiors. To put it bluntly, it’s no different from being a private army, so of course the equipment varies wildly!"

"Oh, so the Third Legion is relatively worse off?"

"No, the Third Legion has five battle groups in total. We’re the newly formed Fifth Battle Group, so our equipment is poorer. The first few battle groups, however, have excellent gear. They’re equipped with all sorts of large-scale weapons for land, sea, and air."

Jing Chuan glanced around before lowering his voice to explain to Long Ming.

"Oh, so that’s how it is!"

Long Ming finally understood.

’Luoxue’s group is the weakest battle group in the Third Legion. Their role must be something like logistics support.’

"Forget it, there’s no point in searching anymore. Let’s go back and regroup with Luoxue and the others. Maybe they’ve found something."

Jing Chuan was no longer in the mood to search.

"Alright."

Long Ming nodded and started walking back.

When they returned to the top of a nearby mountain peak, they saw everyone gathered around Luoxue, reporting their search results.

"No sign of any ruins in the eastern sector."

"Nothing in the southwest either."

After hearing everyone’s reports, Luoxue’s brow furrowed slightly.

Jing Chuan and the others also looked incredibly disappointed. They had searched for so long and still had nothing to show for it.

Just then, Fu Fuqing reminded Luoxue with a gloomy expression.

"Luoxue, we can’t keep searching like this."

"That’s right. We’ve scoured the entire route here and haven’t found any ruins. Besides, we don’t have many supplies left."

Zhihan added, trying to persuade her.

Hearing them both, Luoxue thought for a few seconds before asking.

"Factoring in the supplies we need for the return trip, how much longer can we last on what’s left?"

"One to two days."

Zhihan gave a clear answer.

Hearing this, Luoxue made a decision and announced it to the group.

"Everyone, we’ll press on for two more days. If we still haven’t found anything by then, we’ll pull out!"

"Alright!"

Fu Fuqing and the others didn’t object.

After all, they had come so far, and the thought of returning empty-handed was hard to swallow.

Hearing this, Jing Chuan nudged Long Ming with his arm and said.

"Long Ming, you’re the lucky one. Where do you think we should search?"

"Ahem, how would I know? Luck isn’t something you can count on every day."

Long Ming’s mouth twitched slightly.

"So where are you planning to search?"

Jing Chuan pressed.

At Jing Chuan’s question, Long Ming gazed at the rolling mountain range in the distance. His expression shifted, and he raised his hand to point at the highest peak ahead.

"I’m going to check out that highest peak up ahead."

"Oh."

Jing Chuan nodded.

"Talk later. I’m heading out to search."

Long Ming then turned and left, heading toward the distant peak.

Just then, Jing Chuan caught up to him, chuckling as he spoke.

"Hey, Long Ming, let’s search together! At least we’ll have some company on the way so it won’t be too boring."

"Sure, but don’t blame me if we don’t find anything."

Long Ming nodded.

Three hours later, Long Ming and Jing Chuan scrambled to the top of a smaller peak and gazed at the towering mountain ahead.

Jing Chuan couldn’t help but complain to Long Ming.

"Holy shit, it’s still so far! You really know how to pick ’em, kid. You chose the hardest one to climb."
