Chapter 230: Chapter 230: Growth
The inner city of Osmo City.
Long Ming sat on the city wall, gazing out at the pitch-black horizon. The night was like a voracious Fierce Beast, filling him with a profound sense of unease.
"Sigh~"
Long Ming sighed, then looked down at the wristband in his hand and opened his character interface.
Name: Long Ming (Genetic Defect)
Race: Carbon-based Human
Genetic Level: 0
Profession: None
Power: 8
Agility: 9
Physical Strength: 6
Intelligence: 8
Note: Genetic Defect status. Endurance reduced by 30%. Increased susceptibility to infection.
Long Ming looked at the numbers, a surprised expression on his face. ’My stats have actually grown this much.’ He stroked his chin, lost in thought.
He knew that prolonged combat would cause his stats to grow, but he wasn’t sure if his own growth was high or low.
He’d actually looked up posts about stat growth on the Civilization Paradise forums before.
This phenomenon wasn’t unique to him; other players’ stats also grew.
However, there was very little information about the rate of their growth, and almost everyone avoided the topic.
Of course, this was to be expected. After all, these numbers were a person’s most confidential information, and no fool would casually reveal them.
With this in mind, Long Ming closed the interface and logged into the Civilization forums to check the latest public opinion.
He found the Civilization forums were unusually bustling. Countless posts about the monster tide were popping up, and everyone was discussing the impending attack.
Just then, a post was bumped to the very top, its view count soaring past one hundred million.
Slightly surprised, Long Ming clicked on it.
An auto-playing video was embedded in the post.
In the distance, countless Blood Breath Beasts swarmed across the horizon like a tidal wave.
"Retreat! Fall back!"
...
Soldiers from Sinful City turned and fled in terror.
They rushed toward the transport vehicles, scrambling over one another to climb aboard. Some soldiers were shoved right off.
The drivers of the transports paid no mind to the fallen soldiers, simply flooring the accelerator and speeding away!
"Bastards! Wait for us!"
...
The many soldiers who couldn’t get on shouted curses, their voices a mix of shock and rage.
At that moment, the tanks forming the defensive line abandoned the attack.
They all turned around, driving past the fleeing soldiers to save themselves.
"Don’t go!"
Watching the tanks drive past them, the soldiers grew even more panicked. They began to climb onto the tanks, heedless of the danger.
Some lost their grip and fell, only to be instantly crushed by the tanks following behind.
The scene was one of utter chaos.
At that moment, countless Blood Breath Beasts swarmed forward.
The many soldiers who couldn’t escape in time raised their firearms in terror and returned fire.
BANG! BANG!
Blood Breath Beasts were gunned down, but it was tragically useless. The horde simply swarmed over the corpses of their fallen comrades and pounced on the soldiers.
"AHHH!"
In an instant, soldier after soldier was tackled by the Blood Breath Beasts and then engulfed by the monstrous tide.
Long Ming watched the video, somewhat surprised. Judging by the angle, it was filmed by a drone from directly overhead.
The question was, who would bother to specifically film these scenes and upload them to the Civilization forums?
Of course, Long Ming and the others had no way of knowing that it was Qiansha who had ordered his subordinates to film this, precisely to demoralize Sinful City.
Just then, the post was updated with another video, this one showing the troops of Star Tower City fleeing for their lives in disarray.
Fortunately, these were only the advance forces of the two cities. The main armies were still on the march; otherwise, they would have been dealt a devastating blow all at once.
Instantly, the post’s comment section exploded.
"Weren’t Star Tower City and Sinful City talking a big game before? Claiming they could handle the monster tide."
"Yeah, how are they so pathetic?"
"A bunch of spineless bullies. You really expected anything from them? In the end, it’s all up to us from Mountain City Mountain!"
"Makes sense. But that monster tide looks pretty terrifying. You think we can hold out against it?"
"What’s there to be afraid of? We at Mountain City Mountain never pick a fight we can’t win."
"True. I feel like if we can just survive this wave, the rest of this world will be ours for the taking!"
"Good point!"
...
The many people watching the forum expressed their optimistic opinions.
Long Ming glanced over the comments, his eyes returning to the monster tide in the two videos. His brow furrowed.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong.
This wasn’t a new feeling; it had been nagging at the back of Long Ming’s mind for a long time.
But now, seeing this monster tide, the feeling was stronger than ever.
Although Mountain City Mountain was well-prepared, Long Ming still felt a pit in his stomach.
Unfortunately, they had no satellites, so they couldn’t get a view of the rear of the monster tide. Their recon drones would get shot down after flying a certain distance, making it impossible to confirm the full scale of the horde.
With this thought, Long Ming turned and left to find Luoxue.
As Long Ming walked past the northern entrance of the inner city, he saw that the gate had been re-welded and repaired. Soldiers were carrying over numerous steel plates to completely reinforce and seal the entrance, after which they positioned a line of tanks to block it.
Long Ming glanced over and continued on his way.
Along the way, soldiers were everywhere, reinforcing weak sections of the inner city wall.
Clearly, Qian Luobing was preparing for a prolonged battle.
Soon, Long Ming reached the mountainside, where he saw rows of tanks and artillery pieces positioned.
Once the monster tide arrived, these weapons could open fire from their commanding vantage point.
There, Long Ming saw Luoxue, Jing Chuan, and others taking inventory of ammunition and making their final pre-battle preparations.
Long Ming walked to Luoxue’s side and spoke.
"Luoxue."
"What is it?"
Luoxue turned to look at Long Ming, asking with some surprise.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?"
Long Ming said to Luoxue.
"Go ahead."
Luoxue said with a slight nod.
"I can’t shake the feeling that something’s wrong with this monster tide. Isn’t holding our ground like this a little too risky?"
Long Ming said hesitantly.
Hearing this, Jing Chuan looked at Long Ming in astonishment.
"Why do you say that?"
Luoxue asked calmly.
"All the fighting we’ve done to get here... don’t you think it’s been too easy? If the Blood Breath Beasts are only this strong, how were the original inhabitants of this place wiped out? How were Rein and his people so terrified of them? You have to remember, their technology was far more advanced than ours."
Long Ming asked, completely baffled.
’He was even starting to wonder, were the original inhabitants just a bunch of idiots?’
Luoxue fell silent upon hearing this.
Just then, Jing Chuan scratched his head and spoke up.
"Long Ming, aren’t you overthinking this? Isn’t it possible that the original inhabitants already wore them down in a huge fight? Besides, our people are all valiant, skilled fighters, and we’re clever. In terms of weapons, ammunition, and troops, we’re at our peak."
