Chapter 233: Chapter 233: Requesting Aid

Long Ming and the others immediately raised their Forerunner rifles, picking off the Blood Breath Beasts in the sky.

BANG! BANG!

One after another, Blood Breath Bats and Blood Breath Butterflies dropped like kites with their strings cut.

However, some flying Blood Breath Beasts still broke through their fire, tackling soldiers to the ground and mauling them.

"AARGH!"

A series of bloodcurdling screams rang out.

"Bastards!"

The soldiers nearby quickly turned their guns, firing controlled bursts at the monsters on top of their comrades.

Casualties instantly began to mount among the defenders.

"Damn it, these Blood Breath Bat monsters are so goddamn disgusting," Jing Chuan said to Long Ming as he continued to fire rapidly.

"Nothing we can do. You should be thankful these flying Blood Breath Beasts are relatively weak in close quarters. Otherwise, a lot more of us would be dead."

Long Ming glanced across the battlefield. The ground-based monsters besieging the city posed little threat to them. It was these aerial creatures that were proving to be exceptionally troublesome; all the casualties they had taken so far were because of them.

"Sigh!"

Jing Chuan let out a frustrated sigh.

...

「Mountain City Mountain, City Lord’s Mansion Conference Room」

Qian Ying stood with City Lord Qian Luo, watching a live broadcast of the battles in the three major economic cities.

The live feed showed that the situation in all three cities was grim. They had abandoned saturation bombardment in favor of close-quarters defensive combat.

"Father, the scale of this monster tide... it’s larger than we anticipated."

"Mm," City Lord Qian Luo replied hoarsely.

"Big Brother’s battle plan... it’s just too aggressive," Qian Ying said worriedly.

"It’s fine. Since we’ve given him command, we shouldn’t question his decisions."

City Lord Qian Luo’s clouded eyes flickered, and he spoke weakly to Qian Ying.

"Yes, Father."

Qian Ying replied respectfully.

「Uzika City, Inner City Wall」

Qian Hai sat elegantly in a chair, while Qian Ying stood by his side, holding a mechanical bow.

A dense swarm of Blood Breath Beasts flooded the outer city streets, surging toward the inner city walls, while Blood Breath Bats and Butterflies dove from the sky.

Numerous defending soldiers manned machine guns, firing frantically while constantly tossing grenades.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Blood Breath Beasts fell one after another.

Just then, an elite Blood Breath Bat broke through the layers of fire and dove from the sky, heading straight for Qian Hai.

Qian Ying raised her mechanical bow and fired an arrow at the incoming Blood Breath Bat.

BOOM!

With a massive explosion, the Blood Breath Bat dropped straight out of the sky.

Qian Hai never took his eyes off the tide of monsters before him, his fingers drumming on the armrest as he pondered.

At this moment, Wei Sheng ran over, panting.

"Young Master, the situation isn’t good. The monster tide shows no signs of letting up."

"How much ammunition do we have left?"

"We’re not short on conventional ammo yet, but we’re down to a third of our rockets and artillery shells. The earlier saturation barrage burned through them too fast."

"What’s the status of Star Tower’s forces?" Qian Hai asked calmly.

"They’re in much worse shape than we are. They’re already engaged in melee combat. After all, they don’t have walls, and their defensive line was set up in a hurry," Wei Sheng explained briefly to Qian Hai.

"I see. Continue to hold your position," Qian Hai said after a moment of thought.

"Yes."

Wei Sheng immediately responded.

...

「Outer City, Right Flank – Star Tower’s Defensive Line」

A tank went full throttle, charging toward the incoming Blood Breath Beasts.

CRUNCH!

The tank plowed through swaths of Blood Breath Beasts, its massive steel hull grinding them to pulp.

But a second later, even more Blood Breath Beasts swarmed forward, slamming into the tank.

SCREEECH!

The tank ground to a halt, its tracks jammed with crushed bone and gore.

Swarms of Blood Breath Beasts then lunged forward, completely burying the tank.

"Bastards! For the Star God!"

Following the rousing battle cry!

KABOOM!

The entire tank suddenly detonated from the inside.

But despite the bravery of the Star Tower soldiers, their entire front line was steadily collapsing.

An extremely anxious Lair ran up to Farina, Gefens, and the others.

"Lady Farina, the situation is dire! We’ve lost a third of our tank division. Hordes of monsters have broken through the line and are engaged in close combat with our soldiers. Our casualties are devastating. If this keeps up, we’re all going to be wiped out!"

Farina turned to Gefens and said quietly, "You heard him, Gefens."

"I heard. The problem is, we can’t retreat!" Gefens said, his face grim.

"Then we can’t just sit and wait to die either."

"What do you mean?"

"I think you should call for reinforcements from Elder Fakam. Explain the situation to him."

"Reinforcements? Did you not see that the aerial Blood Breath Beasts took down nearly half of Mountain City Mountain’s bomber fleet? How is Star Tower supposed to help us right now?"

"That’s not your problem to worry about. If we request reinforcements now, at least the council of elders will have time to react. If you wait until we’re about to be overrun, it’ll be too late to ask for help."

Though Farina spoke softly, her tone left no room for argument.

"I get it."

Gefens’s expression shifted, and he finally agreed through gritted teeth.

...

「Aimengka City – Sinful City’s Defensive Line」

An elite Blood Breath Dog broke through the dense barrage of fire at incredible speed, its gaping, bloody maw wide as it lunged for Modick in his second-generation heavy exosuit.

"Courting death!"

Modick swung his massive blade, cleaving it in two with a single strike.

Blood splattered everywhere.

The sounds of battle raged all around. More and more Blood Breath Beasts broke through the tank line and charged in to clash with the soldiers.

"Modick, this isn’t working! We’re at a huge disadvantage trying to defend this position."

Padoka, clad in his own exosuit, shouted urgently to Modick as he cleaved a Blood Corpse Beast in half with his greatsword.

"We hold the line, disadvantage or not," Modick shot back through gritted teeth.

’He was already cursing Qiansha up and down in his mind. If that bastard hadn’t forbidden his troops from entering the inner city, he wouldn’t be in such a passive position.’

"The problem is this tide is endless! We can’t kill them all. If we let them wear us down like this, we’ll all die here the moment our line breaks."

Padoka felt a powerful sense of dread.

"Then what’s the plan?"

Of course, Modick knew Padoka was right.

"Let’s ask the Abyss Lord for reinforcements!" Padoka said, gritting his teeth.

Modick’s expression flickered, then he said to Padoka, "You hold them off."

"Right!"

Padoka immediately charged forward, taking over command of the battle from Modick.

「Mountain City Mountain, City Lord’s Mansion Conference Room」

Qian Luo watched the battle footage from the three cities, coughing from time to time.

"Father, perhaps you should go and get some rest?" Qian Ying said, concerned.

"There’s no need. I can manage," Qian Luo shook his head slightly, his voice raspy.

BZZT.

Qian Ying’s wristband suddenly vibrated, and a message popped up.

Qian Ying glanced down at the message, a look of surprise spreading across his face.
