Chapter 275: Chapter 275: Secrets
The night grew deeper, yet the Civilization Forum only became more raucous, as if day and night had been switched.
Countless people were anxiously discussing the failed decapitation strike and debating what to do next.
"Ugh, this is so frustrating! I want to sleep but I can’t. I want to die but I don’t have the guts. Just being alive is agony."
"What’s there to be afraid of? If worse comes to worst, we’ll fight the Blood Breath Beasts to the death!"
"Exactly! We need to unite right now, gather all our forces, and fight the monsters to the death!"
"Isn’t that just a brute-force approach?"
"Then what do you suggest?"
"What we need now is to assemble an elite force, figure out how to break through the monsters’ encirclement, and launch another decapitation strike against the King’s City!"
"I think that could work!"
"That’s a great idea!"
"Work? My ass!"
"Damn it, can you not be such a wet blanket? You might not want to live, but we do!"
"Who said I don’t want to live? The problem is, according to my intel, there’s still a Monarch-level Blood Breath Beast in the King’s City, plus another monster that’s even stronger. There’s no way we can win."
"Sigh... then what are we supposed to do?"
...
The people of the three great cities racked their brains, but no one could come up with a viable solution.
「Mountain City Mountain Military Airfield.」
Dispatchers were busy directing various types of aircraft onto the runway.
"Fighter 21, please taxi to runway 7. You are second in line, on standby."
"Roger that!"
....
Responses crackled continuously over the comms channel.
Inside the military airfield’s terminal, countless soldiers stood by, fully armed and ready.
Many of the soldiers murmured among themselves in confusion.
"Sigh... what kind of mission are we being sent on?"
"No idea. The CO said not to ask."
"Right. Feels hopeless."
"Cut the chatter. We’re soldiers. All we need to do is follow orders."
"Yeah."
...
Meanwhile, Long Ming sat in a chair with his eyes closed, resting and waiting for departure.
"It’s almost time to go. Why aren’t Qiansha and Luoxue here yet?"
Jing Chuan asked, gazing questioningly into the distance.
"No rush. The operation doesn’t start for another 53 minutes."
Long Ming said, glancing at the bracelet on his wrist.
"Fine."
Jing Chuan nodded.
Just then, the sound of approaching footsteps was heard.
Long Ming and the others turned to see Rein walk in, leading a squad of fully armed soldiers.
"Rein, what are you guys doing here?"
Long Ming stood up in surprise to greet them.
"Haha, we’re here to join the operation, of course. To fight alongside you!"
Rein said to Long Ming with a laugh.
"I’m honestly surprised. I never expected you to join!"
"To be honest, we were won over by your courage. We truly admire you for not giving up, even when there’s only a sliver of hope. If we’d had that kind of spirit, my people might not have been wiped out."
As Rein finished, he let out a desolate sigh.
"Don’t feel bad. Some things are just beyond our control."
Long Ming reached out and patted Rein’s shoulder.
"You don’t understand. Back then, even as we were facing annihilation, everyone was still fighting for themselves. If we had been as united as you are, we might not have lost."
Rein explained with a sense of utter helplessness.
"Well..."
Long Ming felt a little embarrassed. ’Truth be told, we’re not much better.’
"Sigh... Back in the day, the Aniska Empire was incredibly arrogant. They wouldn’t even deign to work with us! But I can’t blame the Aniska Empire entirely. The truth is, every nation had its own agenda and was also utterly cowardly!"
"Oh, I see."
"But that wasn’t even the main reason we failed. The truth is, when the Blood Breath Beasts first appeared, they weren’t that strong. The Aniska Empire was fully capable of wiping them out. But then they managed to extract a special life-activating substance from the beasts and used it to develop Genetic Potions and top-tier weaponry. So, they decided to try and farm the Blood Breath Beasts."
Rein spoke with deep emotion, sharing these old secrets with Long Ming.
"Farm them?"
Hearing this, Long Ming’s eyelid twitched. ’What a boneheaded move. That was just asking for death.’
"Yep. And it all blew up in their faces in the end. Ironic, isn’t it?"
"Very ironic."
"By the time the Aniska Empire realized they’d lost control, it was already too late!"
Rein sounded completely defeated.
"Sigh..."
Long Ming could only sigh at the absurdity of it all.
’Here we are, unable to win no matter how hard we fight, and those guys just threw it all away through their own arrogance.’
CLOMP, CLOMP...
Just then, the sound of heavy footsteps approached.
Long Ming turned to see Qiansha, Luoxue, and the others walking over.
"Everyone, fall in!"
Qiansha shouted, his voice grim and deadly serious.
"Let’s go."
Long Ming said to Rein and his men.
"Right!"
Rein and his men nodded.
Soon, everyone was assembled in neat formations.
Mountain City Mountain only had 15 civilian and military transport aircraft and 20 fighter jets remaining.
As a result, only 5,000 personnel would be participating in this battle.
Qiansha scanned the assembled soldiers, his expression deadly serious as he spoke.
"I know you’re all lost and in despair because the decapitation strike failed. I’m not here to make excuses for that, because it’s true: the Blood Breath Beasts have pushed us to the brink!"
Hearing Qiansha’s words, the soldiers hung their heads in silence.
"But are you really willing to just accept this fate? We still have countless family members behind us."
"We’re not!"
The soldiers roared back, their eyes bloodshot.
"Good. Even a cornered rabbit will bite back!"
"Sir, what are your orders?"
a non-commissioned officer asked, mustering his courage.
"I’ll be straight with you. We have one last sliver of hope. It’s an airborne assault plan: we take the aircraft, force a breakthrough, and head for a secret base behind the King’s City ruins to seize the Aniska Empire’s climate control device. But this operation is extremely dangerous. The probability of success is incredibly low, and for those who go, it’s a near-certain death mission. If anyone is afraid to die, you can back out now!"
Qiansha announced to everyone present.
"We’re not afraid!"
The soldiers roared back, one after another.
"Good. You are worthy of being soldiers of Mountain City Mountain. Not a single coward among you. I, Qiansha, cannot guarantee I can bring you back safely, but I promise you this: I will fight alongside you until the very last moment. You all have fifteen minutes to write your last letters. In fifteen minutes, we board the aircraft!"
Qiansha roared at them all.
"Sir!"
The crowd roared in response.
Logistics personnel immediately moved forward, handing out envelopes, pens, and paper to everyone present.
"Sir, here you go."
A young female logistics soldier with a somewhat naive face walked up to Long Ming and handed him the items.
"That’s alright."
Long Ming replied with a gentle smile.
"Huh?"
The female soldier was taken aback.
"I don’t have any family left."
Long Ming said to the young soldier, his smile unwavering.
"I’m so sorry."
The young soldier grew flustered, not knowing what to say.
"It’s okay. Go ahead and give it to someone else,"
Long Ming comforted her gently.
"Yes, sir!"
The female soldier’s eyes were slightly red as she walked toward the other soldiers.
