A short while later, Illara returned. She was wearing her nicest dress and carrying mine draped carefully over her arm.
"Is this the surprise for me?" I asked.
Illara smiled, handing it to me. "Part of it."
We borrowed the tavern's back storeroom so I could change. When we returned to the table, the soft fabric of the dress felt strange but wonderful after weeks in road-dusted leather.
"You both look so beautiful," Sera said, beaming at us.
Illara took a deep breath, clearly drawing on the liquid courage of the ale she'd drank earlier. "I got the okay from Sera for this," she started, her eyes locking onto mine. "But... Geoff, will you marry me?"
I froze, completely caught off guard by the suddenness of the question—and by the jarring, wonderful sound of my actual name spoken aloud.
"I know we have only known each other for a short time," Illara continued, swallowing hard, her voice wavering just a little. "But in that time, I feel like we have already lived a lifetime together. I never want to leave your side. I want to make it official. So... what do you think?"
She reached into her coin purse and retrieved a ring—a simple gold band set with a striking black opal.
I didn't even hesitate. I took the ring and slid it onto my finger. "Of course, Illara. Nothing would make me happier than spending the rest of our lives together."
I pulled her toward me and kissed her.
For the second time that day, the tavern erupted into massive, deafening cheers.
Sera leaned over the table, her brow furrowed in genuine confusion. "Who the hell is Geoff?"
Beside her, even Jenna managed a small, genuine smile.
We didn't pay for a single drink or meal for the rest of the evening. Patrons continually stopped by our table to offer their congratulations. Surrounded by laughter, music, and the people I loved, I felt a profound sense of contentment settle over me. I was looking forward to the long life we would spend together. As long as we were side by side, I knew we could handle whatever this world sent our way.
