At Yu City.
The battles across the surrounding plains had raged for years without end. Sin Abyss had more than once been driven back by powerful enemies to the very gates of Yu City. Each time, they had fought desperately with the city at their backs, holding the enemy at bay.
Since ancient times, Yu City had been a vital stronghold of Sin Abyss, guarding its northern gateway.
After deciding to retreat and defend Yu City, Sin Abyss had long since made thorough preparations. The arrangements within the city were as solid as an iron fortress.
Yet at this moment, the cultivators inside were filled with unease. Their faces showed confusion as they followed orders, but deep in their eyes lingered fear and uncertainty.
Several months earlier, when the Two-Domain Alliance launched its counterattack, Sin Abyss had been forced into a steady retreat. Even so, they had not been afraid.
They had believed that as long as the three great experts remained, the Two-Domain Alliance merely held the upper hand. At worst, they would give up what they had previously seized, but Sin Abyss's homeland would remain secure.
Over the years, Sin Abyss had occupied nearly half of Tianxing Highland.
Those who had survived the battlefield had amassed wealth beyond imagination. It had been the perfect time to return, rest, and consolidate their gains. But now, everything had changed!
After months of large-scale retreat, it had finally ended that very morning. All the Sin Abyss forces had successfully withdrawn and gathered in Yu City.
Although they had lost the plains and suffered heavy losses, their core strength had not been fundamentally damaged.
Furthermore, Sin Abyss had reached a reconciliation with the desert forces. The cultivators who had been tied down on the western front had also rushed to Yu City to regroup, preparing to face the incoming army of the Two-Domain Alliance.
The Sin Abyss cultivators had been brimming with confidence, convinced they could hold the enemy outside the city.
No one had expected that before the enemy even arrived, chaos would erupt within their own ranks, and among the Spiritual Infant grandmasters no less!
At the time, the cultivators had been following orders and deploying defenses in an orderly manner. Everything had been normal. As veterans of countless battles, they had long been accustomed to such tasks.
Then suddenly, Yu City shook violently! Immediately after, they witnessed a horrifying scene.
From the inner city hall where the Spiritual Infant grandmasters resided, streams of light shot into the sky. At the same time, agonized screams and furious shouts rang out.
There was more than one scream. They rose and fell in succession, each one filled with unbearable pain, like the desperate howls before death, laden with deep, bone-etched hatred.
Anyone who heard them felt a chill run down their spine. More terrifying still, these voices were all familiar. Without exception, they belonged to their Spiritual Infant grandmasters.
The next moment, those streams of light collided and tangled together in mid-air, forming a dazzling, multicolored mass that was as beautiful as it was filled with deadly killing intent.
Those with sharp eyes noticed that within the lights were figures locked in fierce combat. They were the Spiritual Infant grandmasters fighting in chaos.
Rumble... The Spiritual Infant cultivators of Sin Abyss were battling above Yu City.
Soon, it became clear that this was not a chaotic fight. They were surrounding and attacking a single person!
The voices that followed confirmed their suspicion.
"Old Devil Ye! Have you gone mad?!"
"You dare slaughter so many fellow Daoists!"
"Kill him!"
The Spiritual Infant cultivators roared in fury.
Hearing these shouts, the Sin Abyss cultivators below turned pale, vaguely piecing together what had happened.
Old Devil Ye was slaughtering Spiritual Infant cultivators, provoking universal outrage! How could this be possible?
In the past, Old Devil Ye’s conduct had indeed lived up to the title of "Old Devil." He had been capricious and ruthless, unacceptable to the righteous path.
But ever since the alliance between the righteous and devilish factions, he had restrained himself considerably and had even come to be regarded as a respected senior.
He had led from the front time and again, and under his leadership, Sin Abyss had flourished. Even the righteous path had begun to change its view of him.
Was all of it an act? That only now, with nothing left to hide, he revealed his true intentions?
As confusion spread among the crowd, more screams continued to come from the inner city, each one marking the fall of a Spiritual Infant grandmaster.
What terrified them most was that these grandmasters seemed unable even to escape with their Spiritual Infants. Their screams ended abruptly, followed by complete silence.
Old Devil Ye was reputed to be the strongest in Beichen Realm, yet he was not even a great cultivator. And still, his strength was so terrifying that he could slaughter Spiritual Infant cultivators with ease before everyone’s eyes.
The entire city was shaken. Panic spread, and morale collapsed. At last, the screams ceased.
Outnumbered, Old Devil Ye could not continue fighting. He transformed into a streak of blood-red light and shot toward the city gates, on the verge of escaping Yu City.
Canghong and the others tried desperately to stop him. But unexpectedly, the Nether Crystal Tower was destroyed by Old Devil Ye, and they could only watch as he escaped unscathed.
After such an incident, there was no way they could let him go. Canghong led a group in pursuit, though they had the presence of mind to leave others behind to stabilize the situation. Otherwise, Yu City would have already fallen into complete chaos.
The gates of Yu City were sealed shut. The city-protecting array was activated, taking the form of a massive lotus that shone with an azure radiance, enveloping the entire city.
Three figures floated in the sky. They were the Spiritual Infant grandmasters left behind to maintain order.
The Sin Abyss cultivators continued to obey orders, but their expressions were dull and lifeless.
If not for these three watching over them, many would have already fled the city. After such events, how could they still defend it? Everyone was weighed down with worry. Their will to fight had all but vanished.
Above Yu City, the three remaining Spiritual Infants stayed openly in the sky, stabilizing morale.
One of them, an old man, appeared extremely aged, his face covered in deep wrinkles. A heavy aura of decline surrounded him as he sat cross-legged in the air, motionless.
He seemed to be in meditation, yet his aura was unstable, as if he had suffered severe internal injuries. Strangely, there were no visible wounds on his body.
The other two stood on either side of him, acting as protectors.
While issuing commands, they also communicated through voice transmission, the shock and anger still evident on their faces.
At last, Yu City’s situation was temporarily stabilized.
The two glanced down at the old man, and their expressions changed drastically.
In just a short time, the wrinkles on his face had deepened, and his aura had grown significantly weaker, as if his vitality were draining away with each passing moment.
He was a founding grandmaster, once imposing and dignified. Yet now, in mere moments, his hair had turned completely white, and he had become a frail old man on the brink of death.
Fortunately, his aura had stabilized. Though there was no sign of recovery, it did not seem likely to worsen further.
The two exchanged glances, then looked toward the direction in which Old Devil Ye had fled, their eyes filled with deep concern.
"What exactly is Old Devil Ye trying to do?"
"No one can see through his intentions now. It all depends on whether the others can catch up to him."
"They still haven’t returned! Although we reacted quickly and sealed the city gates, we cannot guarantee that spies from the Two-Domain Alliance haven’t already sent the news out. If they—"
Before he could finish speaking, the lotus array outside Yu City suddenly trembled violently.
***
Zhenyi calmly said not to rush. He looked around as if searching for something. After a moment, he said, "Follow me."
The figures of the group flickered as they moved, silently following Zhenyi toward a nearby mountain peak.
