Chapter 101: Chapter 101 — The Twenty-First Floor

The staircase seemed different.

Not because it was longer.

Because it felt heavier.

Every step echoed through the Tower with a dull sound, as though the stone itself carried the weight of countless footsteps that had come before theirs.

Azrael climbed at the front, one hand resting against Astraeus.

Ever since the Eighteenth Floor, his grip had changed.

He no longer held the sword out of habit.

He held it with intention.

Behind him, Seraphina quietly matched his pace.

Caelan walked beside Lyanna, discussing the previous trial, while Orin complained about how much he missed having unrestricted strength.

"I still think making us carry crates for a week was cruel."

Lyanna smirked.

"You carried them for one afternoon."

"My shoulders remember."

Seraphina laughed softly.

"You’ve recovered."

"My pride hasn’t."

The group’s laughter echoed through the staircase before fading into silence.

Finally, the stairs ended.

A massive stone gate stood before them.

Unlike the ornate golden gates of previous floors, this one was weathered.

Its surface was covered in countless carved handprints.

Some were tiny enough to belong to children.

Others were enormous.

At the center was a single inscription.

Every inheritance begins with a foundation.

Azrael read the words aloud.

Caelan frowned.

"That sounds like another lesson."

Azrael nodded.

"Most likely."

The moment he placed his palm against the gate—

RUMBLE.

The ancient doors slowly opened.

Warm sunlight poured through the entrance.

Floor Twenty-One

The group stepped inside.

Before them stretched an enormous valley surrounded by towering cliffs.

Stone villages dotted the landscape.

Fields of grain swayed beneath the wind.

A wide river divided the valley in two.

Smoke rose peacefully from chimneys.

At first glance...

It looked like another ordinary civilization.

Then everyone noticed the difference.

Half the village had collapsed.

Several houses were damaged.

The bridge crossing the river had broken apart.

People hurried through the streets carrying supplies.

Children helped gather wood.

Builders worked without stopping.

No one looked relaxed.

The System appeared.

Floor Twenty-One

Trial Type: Foundation

Objective:

Help restore the Valley of Beginnings.

Time Limit: Three Days

Special Rule:

No overwhelming force may be used.

Additional Rule:

Every contribution matters.

Orin blinked.

"We’re rebuilding a village?"

Lyanna folded her arms.

"That’s unexpected."

Azrael looked toward the damaged bridge.

"No."

"I think this is exactly what the Tower intended."

As they entered the village, an elderly woman greeted them.

"You must be travelers."

Her voice carried exhaustion.

"But if you’ve come to help..."

She smiled gratefully.

"...you’re welcome."

Caelan stepped forward.

"What happened?"

The woman sighed.

"A landslide."

She pointed toward the cliffs.

"Three days ago."

"It destroyed our bridge."

"Our water channels."

"Several homes."

"We’ve been rebuilding ever since."

Azrael exchanged a glance with Seraphina.

The timing matched the trial perfectly.

This wasn’t a random disaster.

It had been prepared.

The woman continued.

"We don’t have enough hands."

"We’ve lost too much time."

"Everyone is doing what they can."

Azrael nodded.

"Then we’ll help."

Dividing the Work

Instead of rushing toward the bridge, Azrael gathered everyone together.

"We should split up."

Caelan nodded.

"Efficient."

Azrael pointed toward different parts of the village.

"Caelan."

"The bridge."

"You understand structures better than any of us."

Caelan accepted immediately.

"Understood."

"Orin."

"Construction."

The larger young man grinned.

"Finally."

"Something I can hit."

Azrael raised an eyebrow.

"With a hammer."

"Fine."

Lyanna looked toward him.

"What about me?"

"The supply routes."

She smiled.

"I was hoping you’d say that."

Seraphina waited.

"And me?"

Azrael looked toward the clinic.

"The injured."

She nodded without hesitation.

Then everyone looked back at Azrael.

"What about you?"

Azrael smiled.

"I’ll go wherever people need another pair of hands."

The old woman watched quietly.

Then smiled.

"You organized that quickly."

Azrael shrugged.

"Standing around won’t rebuild anything."

The Broken Bridge

Caelan reached the river first.

The bridge had once been impressive.

Now only broken pillars remained.

Workers struggled to carry enormous support beams.

One foreman sighed.

"We’ll never finish before the rains."

Caelan examined the damage.

Instead of immediately helping lift wood...

He studied the structure.

The workers looked confused.

One whispered,

"Why’s he staring?"

Caelan suddenly spoke.

"The foundation shifted."

The foreman blinked.

"What?"

"The bridge didn’t collapse because of the landslide."

He pointed toward one of the remaining supports.

"It was already weakening."

The foreman hurried over.

His expression changed.

"You’re right."

Caelan nodded.

"If we rebuild the same way..."

"...it’ll collapse again."

The workers immediately changed their plan.

Instead of rushing repairs...

They reinforced the foundation first.

The foreman smiled.

"You’ve done this before?"

Caelan chuckled.

"No."

"I just learned to pay attention."

Orin’s Construction Crew

Meanwhile...

Orin joined a group rebuilding damaged homes.

An elderly carpenter handed him a hammer.

"Think you can swing this?"

Orin laughed.

"I’ve been waiting all day."

He raised the hammer confidently.

Then immediately hit his own thumb.

THUNK.

"...Ow."

The workers burst into laughter.

Even Orin couldn’t help laughing.

"Let’s pretend that didn’t happen."

By afternoon...

He had improved considerably.

Instead of trying to finish quickly...

He learned proper rhythm.

Measure.

Position.

Hammer.

Repeat.

An old carpenter nodded approvingly.

"You’re learning."

Orin grinned.

"I usually solve problems by charging into them."

The carpenter smiled.

"Wood doesn’t appreciate that."

Seraphina’s Clinic

The small clinic overflowed with patients.

Twisted ankles.

Broken wrists.

Cuts.

Exhaustion.

Unlike previous trials...

Seraphina’s Genesis abilities remained partially restricted.

She couldn’t instantly heal everyone.

Instead...

She relied on everything Elder Iris had taught her.

Clean wounds.

Set bones.

Calm frightened children.

Organize supplies.

She noticed something important.

The injured didn’t only need medicine.

They needed reassurance.

One little girl clutched a broken doll.

"Will our house come back?"

Seraphina smiled gently.

"It will."

The girl looked doubtful.

"Promise?"

Seraphina nodded.

"I promise."

The child smiled for the first time that day.

Lyanna’s Supply Routes

The valley’s roads had become chaotic.

Carts blocked intersections.

Builders waited for missing materials.

Food deliveries kept arriving late.

Lyanna watched quietly for nearly an hour.

Then she climbed onto a crate.

"Everyone."

People turned toward her.

"We’re doing this backwards."

She reorganized everything.

Separate lumber.

Separate food.

Separate medical supplies.

Within an hour...

Deliveries became twice as fast.

One merchant laughed.

"I’ve lived here twenty years."

"Why didn’t I think of that?"

Lyanna smiled.

"Sometimes you need someone who isn’t used to the mess."

Azrael’s Lesson

Azrael spent the day helping wherever needed.

Carrying stone.

Repairing fences.

Digging irrigation channels.

Teaching children how to stack supplies safely.

By evening...

He found himself sitting beside an elderly mason.

The old man watched workers rebuilding a collapsed wall.

"They’re making mistakes."

Azrael looked carefully.

"They are."

"But they’ll fix them."

The mason smiled.

"You noticed."

Azrael nodded.

"They’re learning."

The mason picked up a small stone.

"When people think about strength..."

"They imagine heroes."

He placed the stone into the wall.

"But civilizations aren’t built by heroes."

"They’re built by thousands of ordinary hands."

Azrael stared at the wall.

Every stone depended on another.

Remove one...

The wall weakened.

He suddenly remembered the old master’s circles drawn in the sand.

Everything rested upon a foundation.

The mason smiled.

"You understand."

Azrael nodded slowly.

"I think I do."

The Final Day

By the third morning...

The valley looked completely different.

The bridge stood stronger than before.

The clinic had emptied.

Supply routes flowed smoothly.

The damaged homes had been rebuilt.

Children laughed beside the river again.

The elderly woman who had welcomed them returned.

She looked around proudly.

"You’ve given us more than repairs."

She looked at Azrael.

"You reminded us how to rebuild together."

Azrael smiled.

"We only helped."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You taught us something."

Before Azrael could ask what she meant—

The village froze.

Workers stopped moving.

The wind became still.

Golden light spread across the valley.

The System appeared.

He smiled.

Caelan looked toward the staircase ahead.

A large number floated above it.

22

Orin stretched dramatically.

"Another floor."

Lyanna smirked.

"You’ve stopped asking when this ends."

"I’ve accepted reality."

Everyone laughed.

Azrael looked toward the staircase.

The Twenty-First Floor hadn’t taught them how to become stronger.

It had taught them something equally important.

Before anyone could become someone others relied on...

They had to understand what it meant to build something worth protecting.

Together, the five began climbing toward the Twenty-Second Floor.
