Chapter 37: Weapons Hall

As Dream Star moved away, she suddenly heard the young man she had almost bumped into shout, “HEY WAIT!”

{Here we go, just because I messed up and let my actual voice through. And I was doing so well.}

Dream Star sighed before turning to the young man who had just caught up. However, his next question surprised her as it wasn’t what she had been expecting. “You're Sarah’s friend, right… Err, I mean Blue Ice Queen. She asked me to look out for you.”

“Huh, what?” Dream Star asked in surprise before saying. “Oh yeah, that’s me, Sarah’s- I mean Blue Ice Queen's friend.”

{Sarah’s friend, huh?} At this thought, Dream Star couldn’t help but smile slightly.

“So did Blue Ice Queen tell you that she’ll be placed in another village?”

“Yeah, she messaged me about it after finally being able to play again. Such a shame, I wanted to play with her as soon as possible.”

“Right, I guess her twelve hours are up.” The young man nodded.

Dream Star raised an eyebrow before asking, “Why does it sound like you knew before that?”

“Oh, I asked Tia when I logged in for the first time, but she told me that sar… I mean, Blue Ice Queen was being placed in another village.”

“How about we just call her Sarah when it’s just the two of us? Blue Ice Queen is a bit of a mouthful,” Dream Star asked in amusement.

“Agreed,” John nodded. “I should ask her why she chose such a long name.”

Dream Star nodded and gave him the once-over before asking, "Why are you still in your starter gear?"

John shrugged while saying, "I'm only level one and haven't got any new gear yet."

“You're still only level one?” Dream Star asked in surprise.

“Yeah,” John replied in embarrassment as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I only just reached the village.”

“Only just reached the village? You start in the village.”

John shrugged. “You're supposed to.”

Dream Star frowned at him before saying, “That sounds suspicious.”

{Is he trying to make him sound mysterious to impress me? He doesn’t appear to recognise me, but perhaps Sarah informed him of my real identity. No, she wouldn’t do that; she knows Tia gave me special permission to change some of my features.}

“Suspicious?” Vincarna repeated in confusion.

“Never mind. So what do you plan to do now? Visit the weapons hall?"

“Yeah, a friend recommended I visit here for training.”

“Well, I won’t keep you then since you already seem to be behind in level,” Dream Star teased before waving and saying, “Bye Bye.”

After that, she walked away and half expected Vincarna to chase after her as so many men did in the real world; however, even after several seconds, she heard nothing, so she glanced back only to see that he had gone.

{He really didn’t follow me!} Dream Star thought in surprise before a smile appeared on her face.

“How interesting,” Dream Star mumbled before opening her friends list and sending a certain mutual friend a message.

[Dream Star: You have some explaining to do, girl.]

It took a few moments before a response came in.

[Blue Ice Queen: What are you talking about, Mel?]

[Dream Star: Vincarna, tell me more about him. I want to know everything.]

John passed through one of the many entrances around the base of the Weapons Hall before it opened out to reveal a huge open field. The centre of the field was filled with hundreds of target dummies where many individuals from different races were practising.

He saw humans, Kitsune, Merfolk, Halflings, and many others all training with different weapons that seemed to be separated into sections. Each section had strange rings on the floor, while the rings that were occupied seemed to glow slightly.

One section was for melee weapons that had hundreds of target dummies spread a few meters apart from each other, while another was for unarmed combat where individuals were standing inside the ring, throwing punches and kicks. There was even a long-range weapon section for those who wished to practice with the bow, crossbow or other ranged weapons

As he looked around, he eventually saw individuals queuing up before a selection of tables that had individuals sitting behind them, so John went and joined a random queue behind a male Halfling who was only a little over three feet tall.

The halfling turned upon hearing someone queue up behind him before holding out his hand and saying, "The name's Panlan. Nice to meet you."

"Vincarna, pleased to meet you too," John replied while bending down slightly and returning the handshake.

"What weapon do you plan to train in, Vincarna? Personally, I plan to train with the dagger.”

“A thief, huh? I’m sure your stature would certainly be an advantage,” John replied.

“Right,” Panlan said happily.

John thought for a moment before shaking his head and saying, "Honestly, right now I am not sure. I think first I’ll go with unarmed training and then maybe the sword.”

"You humans love your swords,” Panlan joked before adding. “Unarmed is a sensible choice as it allows us to fight properly even if we lose our weapon or it breaks.”

“That was my thinking too.” {Although it was Sajiko who suggested it.}

"Oh, I’m up next. Good to meet you, Vincarna. I hope we meet again," Paan said before going up to the now open table.

After waiting for a couple of minutes, Panman went off towards the melee weapons section, so John stepped forward and approached the desk that was being attended to by a rough-looking male human.

"Welcome to the Training Hall, lad. Here you can learn the basics of most weapons with hard work and repeated practice, lots and lots of repeated practice. I’m Trainer Frank. What would you like to train in first?"

"The name's Vincarna and I would like to start with unarmed combat."

“Start with?” Frank repeated while nodding. “I like the way you think, lad. Too many youngsters these days are only interested in learning their favourite weapon before running off to fight. A true weapons master knows how to handle all weapons.”

As he finished speaking, Frank laughed loudly, attracting the attention of many of the players queuing up, though the other instructors all ignored him as if they were used to it.

“Ok so first off, I’m assuming you’ve already noticed the ring on the ground that glows when someone steps inside it?” Frank asked and upon seeing John nod, continued.

"That is the training ring and once you step into it, all external noise will be eliminated so that you can fully focus. You will also see a projection of an individual performing a move and your objective is to copy that move perfectly.

The projection won't move on to the next move until you successfully perform the current one. Once all moves have been performed, you will start over from the beginning.

However, I suggest you train using the wooden man post over there first,” Frank said as he pointed towards a wooden man post that appeared to be attacking the player within the ring. “They’re used to help you learn the parry defence skill before you move on to learn normal attack skills. Don’t underestimate the parry defence skill; it may not be as flashy as attack skills, but it’s saved my life more times than I can count.

There are triangles placed on the ground beneath the dummy that will guide you in where to position your feet when defending.

A few things to remember: first, you will naturally think that you should focus on the power of your attack and try to strike as hard and fast as you can. This is wrong; you need to first focus on your positioning and footwork. You can’t defeat anything if you can’t hit it, no matter how strong your attack is.

Try to always remain an arm's length away from the dummy; too far and you can't hit them, too close and you won't get full power behind your hits.

The post has three smaller wooden sticks sticking out; the top two are there to represent the arms of an enemy so you can practice your parry skill as if you were deflecting their attacks away. The lower post is there to help guide you with your positioning; always try to keep it positioned at the centre of your chest.

Other than that, just follow the movements of the projection and don't give up; you can't get anywhere in training if you give up halfway. Any questions?"

"How long am I allowed to train for?" John asked, which made Frank grin.

"Good question, lad. You can train for as long as you can last; the longer you train, the better results you will see, but remember, push yourself too hard and you may end up dead," Frank warned before roaring with laughter again.

After he calmed down, Frank waved him away while saying, "Off you go, lad."

John nodded and headed off towards an empty wooden man post as Frank had suggested so that he could learn parry defence.
