Chapter 46: Currency

And so it began: John remained in the dressing room area while the four women toured the shop and picked out any clothes they thought would fit him and that he would like before delivering them to the dressing room for John to try on. He spent hours in the dressing room trying on all different styles of shirts, t-shirts, jackets, trousers, jeans, shorts, suits, trainers, shoes and anything else the women could think of. In fact, the only thing he didn’t try multiple varieties of was underwear, something John was extremely grateful for.

In the end, it was as Daniella had predicted; there were only two or three pieces of clothing that fit John’s body perfectly, while the rest would have to be custom-made before being delivered to his apartment in a few days' time.

Just as he left the changing room for the final time that day after changing into a new set of clothes he could leave the shop in, he found Mel stepping out from a different dressing room wearing a mint green off-shoulder dress that highlighted her assets while also having a slit up one leg. Upon seeing him, Mel smiled and twirled around while asking, “What do you think?”

John studied the dress for a moment before shaking his head and saying, “No, doesn’t work.”

“Really?” Mel asked in surprise. {Only my management team have ever shot me down like that before; normally people just agree, thinking it’s the best way to gain my favour.]

“The dress itself is nice and works well to highlight your… assets,” John replied as he once again found his eyes dropping to Mel’s chest, something that made her smirk before he forced himself to look up into her eyes again while adding. “But the colour is all wrong; it clashes with your hair colour.”

“Oh! And what hair colour do you think would go well with it?” Mel asked curiously with a small smile.

John, however, shrugged while saying, “I couldn’t say as I’m not an expert; I just don’t think it suits your hair colour.”

“Fair enough, then how about this?” Mel asked before stepping up to John and fiddling with her access band as she began to explain her idea. “I just took a selfie to send to another of my friends to ask for her opinion, so how about if I throw the selfie into an image editor and just change the hair colour?”

{Of course I’m not really changing the hair colour, but you don’t need to know that, John. At least not yet.}

“There done, what about if I changed my hair colour to this?” Mel asked before showing John a picture of herself in the same dress except that her hair was now white-pink instead of brown.

John studied the photo for a moment before nodding, “Yeah, that would work; it would look really good on you. But do you really want to change your hair colour just to match a dress?”

“It was just a thought,” Mel shrugged as she closed the holographic screen featuring the photo while heading back to her dressing room, causing John to ask. “Are you not going to show Sarah and them?”

“Nah, I already knew it was no good and just wanted a second opinion; you just happened to be the one I ran into first,” Mel replied while winking at him over her shoulder before she vanished back inside the cubicle.

“Err, sure,” John replied before he headed out of the changing rooms to find the other three women waiting for him.

“Well now, they weren’t wrong in saying the clothes make the man,” Jessica remarked as she saw John emerging.

“Indeed, you look far more presentable than when you came in,” Daniella nodded with a satisfied smile.

“What do you think, John?” Sarah asked.

“The syles abit different to what I’m used to, but I think it will grow on me,” John replied.

He had done away with his old t-shirt, jeans and trainers and was now wearing a black button-up shirt that he left untucked over a pair of white trousers and a new, more modern and fashionable pair of black trainers.

“Then would you care to settle up?” Daniella asked as she made herself towards the counter.

“You mean you're not giving them to him for free as part of his modelling deal?” Sarah asked curiously.

“That wasn’t part of the agreement, an agreement that still needs to be finalised,” Daniella replied before continuing. “Naturally, he will get pieces from his own clothing line for free in the future and even a discount whenever he purchases in-store, but right now that is not the case.”

“Sorry, John. I tried,” Sarah shrugged apologetically, causing John to show her an appreciative smile.

“Here is your total,” Daniella stated as she transferred the bill from her own access band to John’s, causing a small holographic screen to appear above it featuring a number he didn’t even realise existed. The amount came to more than his total annual rent payment in recent years.

John couldn’t help but gape at the amount for a moment before he slowly opened the banking app on his access band to check exactly how much was in there while hoping to any gods that existed that Sarah was correct in saying that the money owed him had indeed been transferred.

What he saw left him frozen in shock, causing Sarah to giggle loudly as she had been paying attention to his actions.

"Sarah, is John alright?" Daniella asked in confusion.

"He’s fine,” Sarah giggled. “He’s only now just starting to realise how rich he is.”

John stared in shock at the figure on his access band; it was roughly a quarter of a million credits.

Each of the five major continents of Atlantia had its own form of currency created back before the Genesis Agreement by the strongest race of that continent.

The Human Race created credits on the Eloa continent.

The Dwarfs created Zathal in the Himgulir Continent.

The Orcs created Par for the Uzdrord Continent.

The Draconian created ulk'igh on the Xaynneth Continent.

The Elves created telpë in the Essnoris Continent.

John already knew that he would be getting a substantial amount, considering it was eleven years' worth of unpaid government funding that was owed to him, but even still, the amount shown in his bank account was enough to make his brain freeze for several moments.

Eventually, he came back to reality, at which point Sarah asked with a cheeky smile, "Back with us, John?"

John looked at Sarah before rolling his eyes, making her laugh again, before he turned back to Daniella and asked, "Where do I pay?"

“Just wave your access band over the receiver on the counter and you're all good," Daniella instructed as she tapped the counter next to a small screen which also showed the amount owed.

John nodded before he did as instructed, causing the amount on the screen to drop to zero while he received a notification on his access band saying that the funds had been deducted, causing his heart to hurt. He had never once spent so many credits in a single transaction.

Shortly after, Mel reappeared from the changing rooms while carrying the dress over her arm and as she approached the counter, she winked at John before saying to Daniella, “I’ll take it.”

“I thought you might,” Daniella said with a smile.

“Are you sure?” John asked in surprise.

“Why, is there a problem with it?” Sarah asked in confusion as Jessica and Daniella gave curious looks.

“No, no. John just doesn’t think it goes with my hair,” Mel replied, which seemed to explain the matter to the other women. John, on the other hand, just shrugged before turning away as he decided it was none of his business.

As Mel saw this, she wore a confused expression of her own while thinking. {I’m not ready to tell him the real reason why I’m still buying it, so do I have the right to be upset by his nonchalant attitude to my decision?}

“You can pay when ready, Mel,” Daniella suddenly said, snapping Mel out of her thoughts before she swiped her access band over the receiver without even checking the price before they said goodbye to Daniella and left the shop while promising to call her and finalising the terms of John’s modelling contract.

Seeing that John had a slightly sour look, Sarah asked, "What's wrong? You don't like the clothes?"

John shook his head while saying, "No, the clothes are great; it was the cost. Two days ago, that amount of credits would have been enough to cover my rent for a year, and yet I just spent it all on clothes."

"Ah, I see. Well, I don’t mean to be disrespectful of how you used to live, but you don't need to worry about any of that anymore since you now have plenty of money and more coming in every day.”
