Genesis Sync

John opened his eyes and, as always, took a few moments to recover feeling in his body before he climbed off his bed and went down to the kitchen to make himself a snack. As he was doing so, the elevator chimed to announce its arrival before Sarah stepped out wearing shorts and a T-shirt, causing John to stare at her in surprise.

“What?” Sarah asked as she noticed his stare while sitting down at one of the kitchen's bar stools.

“Just never seen you in such casual clothing before; it suits you,” John replied as he went back to making his snack.

Sarah blushed slightly at the compliment before saying, “Thanks.”

“So what did you want to talk about?” John asked.

“A friend of mine needs help with a quest; however, because of her particular situation, she is limited in who she can ask for help,” Sarah began to explain. “It just so happens that Mel’s new passive ability that allows her to communicate with animals is what’s needed; unfortunately, Mel will soon be in Waning City, while my friend who needs help is in Thamethalas.”

“The capital city of the elves in Genesis?” John asked in surprise before adding. “Is this friend of yours an elf?”

“Yes,” Sarah nodded. “We would like to ask you to teleport Mel to Thamethalas using your Astral Recall spell.”

“You girls certainly like to talk a lot,” John remarked, making Sarah blush before she said in an embarrassed tone. “You're an interesting topic.”

{The elven capital, huh? I wonder if it’s really just a coincidence that she came to me with this when I was already planning to head there.}

“Alright, I can help with that, but I have two requests,” John replied, causing Sarah to nod before saying. “Name them.”

“First, you need to stop just barging into my house, as your friend advised. We might be acquaintances going on friends…”

{Acquaintances?} Sarah thought with a downcast look as John continued. “But we’re not at the stage where it’s ok for you to do that. Also, what would happen if people learned that you just entered a man’s home whenever you liked? They would think something was going on between us.”

Sarah nodded in embarrassment again while thinking, {Would that be so bad? Does he not find me attractive? Wait, what the hell are you thinking, Sarah? Bouncing from one guy to the next is why your relationships never last.}

John didn’t seem to notice Sarah’s internal struggle as he continued, “Second, I’d like help from your elf friend in return.”

“Help?” Sarah asked in surprise. “With what?”

“I’m guessing Mel has told you everything that happened to us during our village quest, including the quest I got from the kings of the underworld?” John asked as he sat down next to her before taking a bite of the sandwich he made himself.

Sarah nodded before asking, “About finding the succubi queen, Elrinira, right?”

John swallowed his food before saying, “That’s right. I have a spell that gave me a clue to her being somewhere in the elf kingdom. I need to ask your friend about some clues I saw to narrow down the search. Also, that spell is why I didn’t respond immediately.”

“Is this that guidance spell you received from Ursa Minor's blessing?” Sarah asked doubtfully. “According to my friend, it’s not a very reliable spell.”

“What do you mean?” John asked before Sarah explained. “Well, apparently she knows a few Druids who also received the blessing and spell, and they’ve always found it to be confusing and unreliable.”

“I did indeed have trouble using it initially; however, I eventually figured it out,” John admitted.

“Well, if you're sure,” Sarah replied before saying with a smile. “I’m sure my friend would be more than happy to help you if she can.”

“Sounds good,” John nodded before adding. “Since you're here, do you mind me asking you some things that have been on my mind?”

“Trying to stay up all night talking with an attractive young lady? How shameless,” Sarah teased.

“You're the one who came to a single man’s apartment so late at night; besides, I doubt this is the first time you’ve done something like this,” John teased back.

“Well, you're half right,” Sarah shrugged before adding. “But this will be the first time it will be spent just talking.”

“I’m not sure I want or need to ask what the other times entailed,” John said with a sigh before asking. “What’s the deal with super criticals?”

“So you already know about super criticals, do you?” Sarah asked in an impressed tone.

“I happened to encounter a couple of the old bullies from my school in the starter village and learned about them while beating them,” John explained.

Sarah gave him a concerned look before asking, “What did they do?”

“Tried to force me into telling them about the quest I got from the mayor; however, instead I learned the Genesis identity of the main bully from back then,” John replied with a vicious smile Sarah had never seen him make before.

For some reason, the vicious smile excited her in ways her past boyfriends never had. In an attempt to ignore the fact that she was suddenly starting to feel horny, Sarah said, “Well, when you find him, make sure to call on me to help you beat him up.”

“Thanks,” John replied before asking. “So about super criticals?”

“Why don’t you tell me exactly how you encountered super criticals first, and then I will explain why they worked?” Sarah suggested.

John nodded in agreement before explaining how he had dealt with super criticals to the bullies and then finally with his final attack against Eler Cahro. Only when he’d finished did Sarah ask, “Was the boss in rage mode at the time he was channelling?"

"Yeah, that's right," John confirmed and nodded.

"That's why, then, so far players have found only two ways to land a super critical," Sarah explained. "The first is to incapacitate your opponent and strike their weak spot; the critical then becomes a super critical. Such as what you did against the bullies.

The second way is exclusive to bosses and can only happen when they enter rage mode. Most of the time, after entering rage mode, they will charge a big attack; if you hit a weak spot during that time, it automatically becomes a super critical.

It's like this so players have a chance to finish the boss off, since if the boss successfully launches their charged attack, it normally ends up with the players dying since they normally attack with AOE spells."

"AOE?" John asked, confused.

"It stands for Area of Effect; it’s a type of attack spread over a wider area with the purpose of hitting multiple targets and not just a single one.

Also, you should remember that the higher ranked the boss is, the earlier it goes into rage mode. Because of this, higher-level bosses need teams of players to save up their big hitting spells or abilities for when a boss enters rage mode, or they won't kill it, and the team will wipe."

"I guess we got lucky then," John said with a sigh.

"You got lucky with the battle situation in that the boss could not leave the magic circle, and you both had a spell that allowed you to attack at range. Not with the super critical; after all, it only takes one player landing the super critical to kill a low-ranked boss; it's the higher-ranked ones that the trick won’t work on."

John nodded before asking, “So when will Mel be ready to depart?”

“It hasn’t been that long since I got back from the restaurant, so she’s probably still in the process of handing in the village quest and getting teleported to Waning City,” Sarah replied before adding. “Also, I forgot to tell you, but I wont be able to accompany you for your checkup tomorrow as I’m busy all day.”

“It’s fine; Rebecca mentioned it earlier when I spoke to her,” John replied, to which Sarah nodded before remembering her conversation with Alea before and asking, “What do you plan to do now that you don’t have to work?”

“I hadn’t really thought about it; I’ve been so focused on Genesis after all,” John replied. “I suppose I could take the modelling gig to get me out of this apartment every now and then.”

“What about college or university?” Sarah asked; however, John shook his head and said, “No chance. I never took my final exams since I was too busy working. Looking back on it, that was a foolish decision, but at the time, working and earning a wage was more important.

I guess my primary focus from now on will be on Genesis. I believe that’s what you did in the past, right?”

“You know about that?” Sarah asked in surprise.

“Since we’ve been hanging out so much recently, I decided to do a bit of digging into your history. Apparently you had the opportunity to go to Eloa Continental University, being the niece of the empress and all, but chose not to.”
