Season 5: Chapter 115. The Kind Sniper (2)

Orange King’s name as a professional player was simply Orange, and his position was jungler. In those days, he'd fought against the then-rookie JeonJaPa as an active player. He had quite a few nicknames at the time, but the grandest of them all was the Jungle Calculator.

Orange had revolutionized shortened jungling times during that era, even creating entirely new routes, hence his nickname. He was a designer-type player. Extremely precise strategic planning was his signature strength.

Of course, with age and time, those sharp instincts had dulled considerably. However, a calculator was still a calculator. With finely honed analytical thinking, he'd designed a route all the way to the early Vault.

"WAAAIT!!!"

Now, that calculator had stopped working.

"Don't take a single step! Anyone who moves is a suspect...!"

— He's so overdramatic lmaooo

— Suppressed all that energy

— LOL

— Is he a detective??

— Almond Doyle...

— How badly do you want to win...

The viewers thought he was overdoing it.

'No.'

This moment called for precise calculation. Robbing the Vault and then failing to maximize the reward meant taking a loss.

'First, that Seer's Rune...'

That rune restored nearby allies' health proportional to the damage dealt.

'It looks like a carry rune, but it isn't.'

Looking at the damage-proportional component alone, it seemed to be for a carry. The actual damage coefficient wasn't high. They’d need to pour out substantial AOE damage for it to matter. What was actually high was the base healing value that scaled per level. Set up like this, this rune worked best on a support-type tank.

'More than anything, it doesn't restore health to the holder themselves.'

Runes like this ultimately mattered when the holder survived as long as possible to keep triggering it. Carries died quickly when attacked. It actually needed to go on a tank supporter beside the carry to keep the carry alive. If the flat health rune was added on top, it would essentially forge an oppressively strong early support tank.

'The problem is the champion candidates are BornToB and Bubblegum...'

Every tank contract candidate had a screw loose somewhere. Giving it to the bruiser still made it useless when charging in alone. The heal only affected a small radius around the target.

'The question comes down to who contracts first...'

This one choice would completely split the parallel universes of this team’s future.

'Right, universes... as many possibilities as universes... There has to be a way...'

Orange King closed his eyes.

— ?

— Is he sleeping?

— Why is he closing his eyes LOL

— The overdramatizing is something else

— Eyes clenched haha

In the darkness behind Orange King's closed eyes, thousands of universes unfolded. What if he just ignored them all and went textbook?

'Just contract Bubblegum first...?'

Bubblegum was decent as a pure tank, wasn't he? A support tank wouldn’t be bad. This assumption began to form.

Thud!

Thousands of universes went dark. Many galaxies and even more stars had existed within them. Not a single one emitted light.

'Is there really... not a single viable path?'

The universe declined to answer. The pitch-black darkness was saying, “Nope, there isn't.”

'Damn.'

Orange King gave up on that direction. He looked elsewhere.

'Then... BornToB as tank?'

The universe still remained pitch dark.

'What if I'm the carry-bruiser then?'

Whoooosh!

Light trickled into a few galaxies. Gradually, that light spread out to a few more universes. A decent number of possibilities were opening up.

'It's me~ Orange God!'

Orange King prepared to settle on this and stopped deliberating.

"Groooaaaannnn...!"

A bizarre sound echoed out as enormous faces appeared in the universe. It was Bubblegum and BornToB. They were consuming every star and galaxy.

Crunch crunch.

They were becoming a giant black hole.

'Insane...'

The entire universe was losing its light. Orange King realized.

'In the end... is it that?'

One scenario seeped slowly to the surface. Over the pitch-black darkness, Almond's face surfaced.

'Second lesson, right here.'

Ta-da~

Almond raised his index finger and said, “Contract starting from the most skilled.”

In that instant, the universe began to shine. Tens of universes, no, hundreds... No, thousands!

Huuuuuumm!

Every galaxy radiated with light.

'Ah... no!'

Orange King covered his eyes.

'Th-this one thing I cannot acknowledge...!'

The light blazed as the entire universe burned with light, forcing its way through his eyelids whether he covered his eyes or not. An unmistakably clear path appeared in the galaxies. Every path was light.

'Nothing but light!'

Flash!

Orange King opened his eyes. The universe was gone. In its place stood two trolls. Lemon and Almond were also blankly staring at him.

Orange King put his hand on Almond's shoulder. "Almond."

"...?"

"Let's contract!"

Almond smiled.

— Wow

— lmaooooo

— Wait does this make it Orange King's plan?

— LOL

— That smile is so aggravating

Almond didn't add much. "Sure."

He didn't ask, “Shouldn't we start with the tank?”

"So, which champion? Raina?"

Almond could definitely carry on Raina.

'No.'

That wasn't the future Orange King had seen. Raina suited solo operation and didn't naturally fit Survival mode to begin with. Even if used, she'd only be meaningful at the highest ranks where split operations were viable. A different operation suited their situation.

"Ran."

At the mention of Ran, someone said, "Ran? Ran is so slow though..."

"?"

Orange King felt puzzled because Bubblegum had responded instead of Almond.

— ?

— Why are you chiming in bro

— What do you have to say about it LOL

"What do you mean by that?"

Zap.

Orange King stared at Bubblegum, as if to say, “Who asked you?”

— Why is he glaring LOL

— Suddenly very hurtful

— That's so mean!

— lmaooooo

— FYI Bubblegum is the senior...

Bubblegum did have a reason. "Oh, no. That's not what I mean... Teacher King. I'm kind of an expert at being carried by Almond."

His reason was somewhat compelling.

"You need to give Almond a free-moving, fast character so he can do all the killing and surviving on his own, you know?"

— lmaooooo fr

— This is literally his specialty

— Professional sandbag

— lmaooooo

— MAX persuasive power

— Teacher King lmaooo

"Hmm..."

Even Orange King seemed to find this logic unexpected and paused.

"Still, Ran."

Almond had already picked his champion.

[The Pure Sniper: Ran]

Huuuuum!

Pure white light enveloped him as snow-white mana clusters circled nearby.

'You chose me. I'll live up to your expectations.'

Ran’s faint silhouette formed behind Almond. He smiled quietly and faded.

"Okay! Right! Contract done! Let's gooo!"

Orange King started with Ran as the first contract.

"BornToB! Bubblegum! Just protect Almond! Don't think about doing anything else! If he dies, we all die! Just guard him with that mindset!"

"Yes, sir!"

"Sir!"

The strategy didn’t end with who contracted first. This was actually just the beginning. A good strategy had to go hand in hand with detailed tactics. They couldn't exist separately.

"I'll hang back and counterpunch. Lemon, set your staff for healing, wind, or ice CC and just shoot. Anything coming near me, use ice. Anything coming near Almond, use wind. Got it?"

"Oh... yes, sir!"

Orange King clenched his teeth and took the lead. "LET'S GOOO! NUT VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH!"

— LOL

— lmaooo

— Nut Village Neighborhood Watch what

— lmaooo it actually fits

— Hahaha

— But Almond's runes are all tank runes though. Is this okay?? lmaooo

***

On the way to the next route, Orange King gave an advance warning at the very front. "We're about to run into people."

Everyone was puzzled. How did he know that? It turned out to be true.

Orange King’s siren rang out. "WARNING!!"

Enemies simultaneously appeared.

— Literally right on cue

— Warning lmaooo

— Siren GOAT

— His voice is genuinely legendary so loud

— Did Orange King maybe get a legendary rune that increases his volume?

— lmaooooo

"This is the most important moment!"

This engagement would decide whether the early picture Orange King had drawn held any meaning.

His eyes burned as he shouted, "All tanks stay ON Ran!"

"Yes, sir!"

Click!

BornToB and Bubblegum stuck right beside Almond. Orange King positioned himself on the flank with Lemon behind Almond.

Whooooooosh!

A rope shot toward the rear of their formation.

"OKAAAY!"

In the last match, they'd been blindsided by a reckless first-contract assassin.

"Here they come! These trash players contracted an assassin first again! It’s the Rope Assassin!! Lemon, come to the front! Tanks stay glued!"

"Yes!"

"Almond just hit as many as you can!"

It wasn’t an order to deal with the assassin, but to shoot down as many enemies as possible.

Almond nodded. "Sure."

Zip!

The Rope Assassin closed in incredibly fast. Uncontracted players couldn't respond to this speed.

"Huh? What? A first carry contract? The Dumb Young Man nickname really suits you~." The Rope Assassin laughed at their composition while flying toward the rear.

"Who's talking when you contracted an assassin first!?" Orange King called out to the Rope Assassin and acted as if he would charge at them.

"?"

It was a feint. He ran toward the enemy formation instead.

"Shoot him!"

Rat-a-tat-tat-tat!

Bullets and magic flew from the enemy formation. Orange King somehow twisted his body and moved behind cover to dodge. Lemon managed to dodge too.

"Hah... hah... barely dodged."

"O-oh, teacher, is this right?!"

"Can't win otherwise." Orange King pointed beyond them. "Enemy positions exposed!"

They had baited out the enemy carry's attacks.

— Wow

— What

— I see

— Right... couldn't see where they were

"SHOOOOOOT!" Orange King shouted.

[Pure Concentration]

Huuuuum!

Ran aimed from far away. White light ignited.

[Release]

Craaaaaash!

A direct hit landed perfectly into the center of the enemy formation.

"Follow up! Fireball!"

"Yes, yes!?"

Lemon had been asked to prepare ice and wind just a moment ago.

"FIREBALL!!"

Real-time feedback was always part of the operation.

"F-FIRE!"

Whooooosh!

Her fireball launched and struck the enemy formation.

Crash!

Acrid smoke blocked visibility as Orange King pushed to the front.

"Teacher King! What about the rear?!" Lemon was worried about the back.

They needed to heal. The assassin champion had gone in.

"They won't die."

"Th-they won't?"

Crash!

Ran, their only champion, fired once more into the enemy formation. At this rate, the assassin would be completely free.

***

"Wh-what?"

Thud!

Ka-clang!

The Rope Assassin couldn't take out the tanks. Uncontracted tanks would drop below 20% health when an assassin champion dumped their full skill rotation, but... they didn't die or even budge.

"What the HELL are you!!" The assassin's pupils shook.

"Teeheehee. Is that all you got?"

"Bro... should I kill him?" BornToB licked the shield with his tongue.

It was terrifying.

— lmaooooooo

— Their health keeps refilling LOL

— lmaooo

— Hahaha

— The villain acting is insane

"DIEEEEE!"

Slash!

The Rope Assassin activated a combo and tried to finish them off. The damage landed, but their health refilled.

‘Hm?’

Only then did the Rope Assassin realize.

Huuuum!

A green ring had formed around Ran, refilling his health.

'What is this?'

It was the rune’s effect.

[Seer's Rune]

==== ====

Grade: Hero

Effect: With each instance of damage dealt to an enemy, restore nearby allies' health proportional to the total damage dealt.

==== ====

This didn't restore the holder's own health, but what mattered here was the proportion of total damage dealt. Ran was the only carry whose basic attacks were innately splash damage. Hitting multiple enemies caused total damage to grow exponentially.

Huuuum!

[Health Restored]

"Hehehehe!"

"Teeheehee!"

As long as Almond kept landing attacks on the enemy formation, the troll twin spirits were invincible.
