Global Apocalypse: My System Is Always AFK
Chapter 61: Sleeping Through an Assassination AttemptThe pressure that filled the room didn’t announce itself with light or sound. It simply arrived, all at once, a stillness so absolute that Ren felt her own heartbeat as an intrusion against it, and every instinct honed across fifteen years of infiltration work screamed at her to withdraw the blade immediately.
Kaito didn’t hear that instinct in time. His ceremonial gesture — the blade meant only to rest lightly across a sleeping chest, proof of the impossible — had already crossed the threshold, and the moment its edge entered whatever invisible boundary surrounded Ethan’s sleeping body, the steel simply gave up existing as a coherent object.
It didn’t shatter loudly. There was no dramatic flash, no crack of sound to alert the rest of the building. The blade simply crumbled, silently, into a fine gray dust that sifted downward through Kaito’s fingers and settled onto the blanket without so much as a whisper, leaving him holding an ornate, empty hilt attached to nothing at all.
[PASSIVE SKILL TRIGGERED: VOID GUARDIAN (LV. 3)]
[THREAT DETECTED: WEAPON APPROACHING WITHIN DEFENSIVE THRESHOLD]
[RESPONSE PROTOCOL: NON-LETHAL DETERRENCE — WEAPON NEUTRALIZATION]
Kaito froze, staring at his own empty hand in the dim light, and slowly, carefully, took one silent step backward.
Ethan didn’t stir. He shifted slightly beneath the blanket, mumbled something indistinct that might have been a complaint about the temperature, and settled back into the same deep, undisturbed sleep he’d been enjoying since before any of them had ever entered the room.
Ren, watching from the foot of the bed, felt something cold settle in her stomach — not fear exactly, though there was plenty of that too, but the specific professional dread of a strategist watching her own carefully gathered intelligence prove catastrophically incomplete in real time.
She signaled the retreat with two sharp fingers, the universal gesture for abort, withdraw now, and her remaining three operatives began backing toward the door with the same trained silence that had gotten them this far.
One of them, a younger operative named Sato, hesitated at the threshold of the doorway, glancing back at the sleeping boy with an expression that mixed professional caution with something closer to genuine, dangerous curiosity. He’d trained his entire adult life for exactly this kind of impossible infiltration, and some part of him — the part Ren had warned him about repeatedly during their preparation — wanted proof beyond a single crumbled blade, wanted to understand the actual mechanism of what had just happened rather than simply accepting it and fleeing.
He reached for his own weapon, a shorter blade tucked at his hip, and extended it toward the sleeping figure — not to strike, only to test, to see if the same threshold applied at a different angle, a different distance, a different approach vector.
The result was identical. The moment his blade’s edge crossed the invisible boundary, it dissolved into the same fine gray dust, and this time the sudden absence of resistance made Sato stumble forward half a step, catching himself against the foot of the bed with a soft, involuntary grunt.
Ethan’s eyes remained closed. His breathing didn’t change. But his leg shifted slightly beneath the blanket, kicking out in the reflexive, half-conscious way anyone might respond to an unexpected bump against their bed — and the motion, though clearly unintentional, sent Sato stumbling backward into Ren, who caught him with a hand clamped hard over his mouth before either of them could make another sound.
[2 WEAPONS NEUTRALIZED]
[THREAT LEVEL: MINIMAL — INTRUDERS APPEAR NON-LETHAL IN INTENT]
[NOTE: USER REMAINS UNAWARE OF ONGOING SITUATION]
The remaining two operatives, watching their colleagues’ weapons dissolve twice in a row, wisely chose not to test the theory a third time. They moved toward the door with Ren and Sato, retreat now the only priority, but the room’s careful, tense silence had one more test in store.
Kaito, still holding his empty hilt, brushed against the small folding table near the door on his way out — the same table Ethan had dragged in weeks earlier to hold Rohan’s borrowed laptop, currently stacked with a small collection of monster-part trinkets Ethan had never bothered clearing away. His shoulder caught the edge, sending one of the trinkets — a small, curved fang mounted on a thin metal display stand — clattering to the floor.
The sound, small as it was, cracked through the room’s careful silence like a gunshot.
Every operative froze. Ren’s hand tightened on the door frame, prepared for the worst — a sudden, violent response, an alarm, some catastrophic escalation that would turn a careful infiltration into a genuine fight for survival against a being none of them had any realistic chance of surviving.
Ethan groaned, rolled over, and pulled his pillow more firmly over his head.
"...five more minutes," he mumbled, voice thick and slurred with sleep, entirely unaware that four elite operatives stood frozen not six feet from his bed, holding their breath in the wake of a noise loud enough to wake most people from a light doze.
Nobody moved for nearly thirty full seconds. When it became clear that Ethan had, genuinely, gone back to sleep without so much as opening his eyes, Ren finally allowed herself to exhale, and gestured, with considerably more urgency this time, toward the door.
They retreated the way they’d come — back down through the fourth-floor hallway, down the stairwell, through the basement’s foundation gap, and back into the tunnel network beneath the district, moving with a speed that abandoned some of their earlier caution in favor of simply putting distance between themselves and Room 404 as quickly as possible.
They didn’t stop moving until they’d cleared the tunnel system entirely and reached the safehouse three kilometers out, where Ren finally allowed her team to catch their breath, all four of them settling into chairs with the particular, shaken exhaustion of professionals who’d just survived something they didn’t fully understand.
"Report," Ren said, once she’d composed herself enough to speak steadily.
"Two blades neutralized on contact," Kaito said, still turning the empty hilt over in his hands like he expected it to reconstitute itself. "No warning, no visible trigger, no sound. The weapons simply — stopped existing. And he never woke. Not from the first neutralization, not from the second, not even when I dropped an item on the floor."
"He was aware enough to react," Sato added, rubbing his shoulder where Ethan’s reflexive kick had connected. "Physically, at least. But it was — it wasn’t conscious. It was like his body was defending itself entirely on its own, without him ever needing to actually be awake for it."
Ren sat with that assessment for a long, quiet moment, thinking of everything the Coalition’s reports had already suggested and finding, now, a considerably more unsettling confirmation of it.
"He’s not protected by wards or allies or careful vigilance," she said finally, voice quiet. "He’s protected by something that operates independently of his own conscious will. We stood over him with weapons drawn, and the greatest risk any of us faced wasn’t retaliation — it was the mundane possibility of making enough noise to disturb his sleep."
"What does that tell us?" Kaito asked.
Ren considered the question for a long moment, thinking of the empty hilt still resting in her second’s hands, of the boy who’d slept through an assassination attempt by four of the world’s most capable infiltrators and woken for nothing more than five additional minutes of rest.
"It tells us," she said finally, "that we were never actually the threat in that room. We were just an inconvenience he didn’t have to consciously deal with." She stood, already turning toward the door, message clear in her mind even if the mission had produced nothing close to what she’d originally intended. "Send word to the Coalition. Tell them Director Voss was right. Observation only. Whatever that boy is, he doesn’t need to be awake to be untouchable — and I have no interest in finding out what happens if we’re ever unlucky enough to actually wake him up."
