Global Descent: I Alone Can See Hidden Evolution Paths
Chapter 179: Soul BoundThe massive iron track-arm came down fast. It cut through the hot, greasy air of the pit with a deep roar, aiming straight for Jun-ho’s head.
Jun-ho didn’t try to slide out of the way. He planted his large rubber boots deep into the thick layer of black muck at the bottom of the pit, raised the black iron wedge with his left hand, and took the full weight of the strike directly on the unpolished metal blade.
Boom!.
The sound inside the hollow concrete turntable room was deafening. The impact was so violent that the grease on the floor blew outward in a flat, five-meter ring, exposing the raw stone foundation beneath. Jun-ho’s boots sank two inches into the dirt, but his arm didn’t shake. His monstrous endurance stat held his frame perfectly rigid, his skin staying cold and clean under the shower of white sparks that erupted from the friction.
Deep inside his chest, the silent gray boxes began to scroll at a furious pace.
[Tyrant’s Retaliation triggered.]
[Absorbed 450 points of elite primitive physical damage.]
[Multiplying absorbed force by 500%...]
[Total kinetic force stored: 2,250 points. Mana cost: 50. Current Mana: 1210/1260.]
The vibration in his left shoulder turned into a heavy, roaring hum that felt like a localized earthquake trapped under his skin. The muscles in his bare arm swelled, the geometric patterns of his mana outline flashing with a brilliant, white heat that began to dry the mud on his jeans instantly.
"Move back!" a sharp voice barked from the high rim of the concrete pit.
Jun-ho didn’t look up, but his high mana perception picked up the sudden influx of twelve distinct energy signatures bursting through the narrow entry tunnel.
Sang-woo’s father stood at the edge of the pit, his expensive blue wool cloak stained with black grease from the station office wires. Behind him stood the main raid detail of the Sun God Guild—eight heavy enforcers in polished steel plate armor and three senior mages holding long, silver staves that glowed with a bright, active purple light.
Leading the front line was Commander Jin-young, a Tier 5 heavyweight whose name was constantly featured on the central district billboard charts. He wore thick, custom-made white alloy armor that didn’t have a single scratch on it, and he held a massive, double-handed broadsword that vibrated with a sharp, high-tier lightning attribute.
"The rogue vanguard is already taking the initial aggro!" Commander Jin-young called out, his voice booming across the circular cavern with an arrogant, practiced authority. He didn’t look at Jun-ho as a person; he just saw a Tier 1 disposable shield unit holding the boss in place. "Mages, drop the stone barriers behind him! Don’t let the trash pull the monster toward our rear line! Front line, prime your execute skills! The second the hound’s ribcage opens, we take the core!"
The three senior mages instantly stepped forward, raising their silver staves in unison. A deep, heavy rumble shook the walls as a wall of solid rock began to rise from the mud right behind Jun-ho’s back, sealing him inside the ten-meter pit with the thrashing Slag Engine.
Min-ah stood near the back of their group, her face pale, her fingers clutching a fresh wind catalyst. Her eyes were fixed on Jun-ho’s back, her lips moving in a quiet, trembling line as she realized he was still alive.
"He’s... he’s holding the Tier 4 charge with his bare arm," she whispered, her voice shaking so hard Sang-woo’s father had to shove her shoulder to keep her in line.
"Shut up and prepare your buff spells," the old man hissed, his face twisted into a greedy snarl as he stared at the glowing white core inside the monster’s ribs. "That stone is worth fifty million won on the public market. Once Jin-young takes the final hit, the corporate logs belong to us."
Commander Jin-young let out a short, proud laugh. He leapt off the concrete rim, his white alloy armor catching the glare of the furnace light as he dropped into the pit, his lightning broadsword raised high to steal the kill log.
"Stand down, novice! The Sun God Guild is taking over this sector!"
Jun-ho didn’t turn around. He didn’t even look at the Tier 5 Commander dropping from the sky.
He reached into his left pocket with his good hand, his fingers closing around the cold brass casing of the Paradox Dial.
"No," Jun-ho said, his voice quiet, completely swallowed by the mechanical shriek of the golem.
[Paradox Dial Utility Active.]
[Target: Commander ’Jin-young’ (Active Execute Skill - Lightning Cleave).]
[Mana Cost: 200. Current Mana: 1010/1260.]
He pressed the small brass button down.
A heavy, metallic click echoed through the air—a sound that didn’t travel through the ears, but through the mana pathways of the room. Instantly, the bright blue lightning vibrating around Jin-young’s massive broadsword died out, turning into a dull, regular current that sputtered and vanished. The white aura around the Commander’s boots froze completely, the skill indicator inside his own vision turning a solid, locked gray color for sixty seconds.
"What—" Jin-young gasped in mid-air, his face turning an ugly shade of shock as his body lost its magical momentum, dropping heavily into the thick black grease three meters away from the boss. "My cooldowns... my active line is jammed! Mages! Dispel the field! I’m locked out!"
The three mages on the rim tried to twist their staves, but their spells wouldn’t register; the ancient logic of the brass watch had frozen the entire local area framework.
Jun-ho finally let the stored 2,250 points of kinetic force explode out of his left shoulder. He didn’t use the sharp edge of the black wedge; he simply drove the flat side of the heavy weapon straight into the center of the Slag Engine’s blood-red locomotive chest.
The shockwave didn’t just rattle the room; it fractured the concrete walls of the turntable. A localized thunderclap blew the black engine block completely apart into thousands of tiny, smoking metal scraps that rained down into the mud. The massive white light inside the monster’s ribs shattered with a sound like a brick hitting glass, the fragments dissolving instantly into a giant cloud of grey ash.

Right in the center of the black grease, where the core had vanished, a single, glowing black crystal sphere materialized, floating three inches above the dirt. It didn’t look like standard loot; it carried a deep, ancient text line that blinked silently in Jun-ho’s sight.
[Loot Drop Mutated: Ancient Core of the Ash Monarch.]
[Value: Unregistered / Soul Bound.]
Jun-ho reached out his hand, his fingers closing around the black crystal before Commander Jin-young could even struggle out of the thick mud. The stone vanished straight into his inventory slot, the gray notification box closing with a quiet click.
He turned his head slowly, his dark eyes locking onto the Tier 5 Commander whose armor was now covered in black grease. The right sleeve of Jun-ho’s shirt was entirely gone, exposing an arm that didn’t have a single red mark, though the air around his skin was still vibrating with the remaining force of the multiplier strike.
Ten meters above, near the entry tunnel, Eun-bi was standing behind the blue stone barrier the mages had raised. She didn’t look panicked anymore. She had her heavy trauma shears clutched loosely in her hand, a dry, sharp smile pulling at the corner of her lips as she looked down at the Sun God detail trapped on the upper rim.
"I told you the maintenance budget was low, Commander," she called out down into the pit, her voice dropping into that flat, bored public-sector drawl. "The tracks down here are really uneven."
