Global Descent: I Alone Can See Hidden Evolution Paths
Chapter 183: the bindThe inside of Myeong-suk’s forge didn’t have the clean, warm smell of Gyeong-su’s shed. It was a long, low-roofed limestone barn built right into the river mud, smelling of stale brine, heavy mineral slag, and the wet hair of the sea dogs rotting on the banks outside.
A single oil lamp hung from a curved iron spike in the central support timber, its yellow wick flickering every time the salt wind whistled through the gaps in the stone walls.
Jun-ho sat on a low,three-legged wooden bench near the cold hearth, his large rubber boots caked in grey river muck. The black iron wedge lay across his knees, its rough, scaled surface reflecting the weak oil light in dull, uneven patches.
Across the room, Myeong-suk was poking a thick iron rod into a pile of dark, unlit coke coals. He didn’t have a modern electric starter; he just worked the old leather bellows with his foot, his scarred neck turning a deep, dark red as the air forced a small, yellow spark to life in the dust.
"Gyeong-su is getting old," Myeong-suk said, his voice deep and raspy like two bricks grinding together. He didn’t look at Jun-ho. "Only an old man who has forgotten the weight of a corporate raid would forge a seventy-kilogram bar without an attribution socket. If you hit a high-tier knight with this thing, the recoil will blow your own wrist tendons right through your skin."
"The tendons are fine," Jun-ho said.
Eun-bi sat on the opposite end of his bench, her canvas bag resting between her shins. She had pulled the dry flannel shirt tight around her shoulders, her fingers working a small, silver screw on the back of her electric headlamp. Her face looked small and sharp in the dim yellow light, her lips parted slightly as she breathed through her teeth to keep from shivering.
"The ministry database doesn’t list Myeong-suk’s registry," she said softly, her shoulder brushing against Jun-ho’s torn sleeve as she leaned close to keep her voice down. "I checked the backup terminal cache before we left the ship. His shop was marked as a collapsed storage vault five years ago. He doesn’t exist on the district tax grid."
"Good," Jun-ho said.
He didn’t explain the gray lines that had just ignited across his retinas, completely silent in the shadow of the oil lamp.

Jun-ho closed his right hand around the cold black crystal sphere in his jacket pocket, then laid his bare palm flat against the center of the dark iron wedge balanced on his knees.
"Bind," he whispered.
[Soul Bind Triggered.]

A sudden, freezing wave of energy rushed out of his chest, far more intense than the cold from the Ashen Domain. It didn’t expand outward into the room; it pulled inward, a violent suction that made his bones ache as the black crystal in his pocket completely dissolved into a fine, ink-black fluid that rushed up his sleeve and into the steel bar.
The rough, scale-covered surface of the railroad iron didn’t melt. It changed color, turning from a dull charcoal gray into a deep, solid matte-black that didn’t reflect a single ray of light from the oil lamp. The crude, blunt edges of the wedge thinned out naturally, sharpening into a clean, smooth line that looked like dark glass.
Right near the thick handle base, four ancient, unhurried characters etched themselves into the iron: [The Ash Remnant].
[Soul Bind Complete.]

Jun-ho lifted the blade with his left hand. The weapon was still seventy kilograms of dead mass to the rest of the world, but in his grip, balanced against his newly mutated soul, it felt as light and fluid as a dry willow branch.
Myeong-suk stopped working his foot bellows. He turned around slowly, his long iron poker dripping a bit of red ash onto the dirt floor as his sharp eyes locked onto the solid black metal in Jun-ho’s fist. The old blacksmith didn’t see the gray text box, but he could hear the distinct, heavy hum of high-density mana vibrating through the room—a sound so deep it made the sea water in his cleaning buckets ripple in small, perfect circles.
"That’s not Gyeong-su’s hammer work," Myeong-suk said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, deadpan whisper as he stepped back toward his tool rack. "The iron didn’t take a temper from the fire. It took it from your ribs."
Jun-ho stood up from the bench, his large rubber boots making a quiet, firm thud on the packed mud. He slid the black blade down into his duffel bag, the dark iron instantly vanishing from sight under his spare shirts.
"We need a place to sleep for three hours," Jun-ho said, his face a flat sheet of stone. "And some clean water."
Eun-bi stood up right next to his shoulder, her yellow rain jacket rustling as she slung her canvas bag over her arm. She didn’t look at Myeong-suk’s iron poker. She looked straight at Jun-ho’s face, her sharp eyes narrowing with that same stubborn, practical clarity that had kept her alive in the subway lines.
"The back room has two old canvas cots and an iron water basin that isn’t completely rusted through," she said, her voice returning to that flat public-sector whine as she led the way toward the low wooden partition wall. "Let’s get inside before this old man decides to charge us fifty thousand won just for the draft."
Myeong-suk let out a short, nasal grunt, turning his back to dump the hot iron rod back into his scrap bin. "The lock on the inner door is broken, girl. Don’t use the handle too hard, or the whole frame will drop onto your shins."
"We’ll manage," Eun-bi said, pushing the creaking wood open and stepping into the dark back room right ahead of him.
