Black grease coated Marcus's hands as he hoisted a crate of unrefined iron slag onto the moving rubber belt, his spine bowing under the endless shifts. Gray streaks dominated his hair.

He glanced across the processing line toward Liam and Elena, watching Liam wipe sweat from his dirt-stained forehead to offer a single nod.

They had spent weeks preparing for this rotation, mapping the patrol routes of the Vanguard guards and memorizing the automated conveyor cycles.

Marcus slipped his hand inside his soot-stained tunic and retrieved a stolen bio-gas canister, knowing this was their only chance to break the perimeter.

He wedged the explosive cylinder between the interlocking gears of the primary sorting track and jammed a rusted iron spike against the release valve.

The factory horn blared across the facility to signal the feeding shift.

Marcus slammed his palm against the spike, spinning around to sprint toward the assembly tables.

The bio-gas charge detonated—showering chunks of twisted steel across the concrete floor as the automated conveyor line collapsed into a massive pile of smoking ruins.

Marcus grabbed a sharpened length of rebar from the debris and turned to the bewildered laborers surrounding the tracks.

"Move!" Marcus shrieked, waving the rusted spike toward the loading bay doors. "Get to the exits!"

Elena and Liam clutched sharp scraps of salvaged material to join the charge. The aging laborers surged forward as a desperate mob, trampling the fallen guards and sprinting across the factory floor to seek the open sunlight beyond the loading bays.

A blinding violet tear ripped open the space directly above the ruined assembly line. A colossal cage constructed from polished bone plummeted from the portal, slamming onto the concrete to completely obliterate the remaining iron tracks.

The impact sent a massive shockwave across the factory and hurled the front line of the rebellion backward into the dust.

Marcus scrambled to his feet, raising his rusted shiv at the sudden obstacle blocking the exit.

Inside the massive bone structure, Eon sat comfortably on a pile of cured leather blankets. Eon dropped a dented bronze helmet and peered through the thick white bars at the charging horde while cosmic pools of shifting light swirled inside his dark eyes.

Marcus locked his gaze on Eon and bared his teeth. He lunged at the cage, thrusting his iron spike between the ribs aimed directly for Eon's chest.

Eon clapped his hands together and giggled brightly, pointing a single glowing finger at Marcus.

The gravitational pull inside Marcus's lungs violently reversed. Breath tore its way out of his throat to collapse his respiratory system instantly.

Marcus dropped the iron shiv and clutched his neck, his face turning a dark shade of purple as he collapsed onto his knees to hack up blood onto the concrete.

Liam scrambled backward across the floor, dropping his iron pipe in the dust before slamming his spine against the base of the bone bars with a loud crack.

Eon crawled to the edge of the playpen and tilted his head, treating Marcus and Liam exactly like interactive action figures. He applied microscopic gravitational fields directly to Liam's joints.

Liam's left arm snapped violently backward to bend the elbow into a physically impossible angle. Liam unleashed a bloodcurdling scream as the bones splintered through his skin.

Eon smiled and waved his hand to repeat the process on Liam's right leg, folding the knee sideways until the kneecap shattered completely.

Eon dropped his hand to release his grip. Marcus collapsed onto the concrete, clutching his bruised throat while gasping for breath.

Eon turned his cosmic eyes toward the huddled group of laborers pressed against the conveyor belt. Cole and Jenna scrambled backward on their hands and knees to scrape their dirty palms against the rusted iron tracks.

Eon giggled and crawled to the opposite side of the bone enclosure. He slapped his palms against the polished white bars to activate his spatial magic.

A localized gravitational field swallowed Cole and Jenna.

The invisible force ripped them off the ground and pinned them flush against the ceiling of the foundry. Cole thrashed his legs wildly to find a foothold. Jenna clawed at the metal grating above her head. Eon tilted his head and squeezed his fingers into a tight fist.

The gravity pinning them shifted into a compact singularity. Cole and Jenna slammed into each other with a sickening crunch of collapsing ribcages.

Their limbs tangled together as the crushing weight folded their bodies into a tight, bleeding sphere. Blood dripped from the ceiling to splatter across the sorting belts below.

Eon clapped his hands in delight and released his grip. The mangled sphere of flesh and bone plummeted fifty feet to crash onto the factory floor.

Noah and Mia bolted toward the eastern loading bay doors. They shoved past the aging workers to reach the open sunlight. Eon reached his tiny hands through the gaps in the bone bars to mimic a tearing motion.

A miniature spatial rift tore open directly in front of the fleeing couple. Noah stumbled forward and fell waist-deep into the pitch-black portal. The rift snapped shut in a fraction of a second.

Noah's upper torso tumbled onto the concrete while his lower half remained completely erased from existence. Mia scrambled away from the bisected corpse. She slipped on a puddle of spilled grease and hit the floor hard.

Eon pointed a glowing finger at her trembling form. Spatial distortions rippled across Mia's arms and legs. Her joints twisted backward into unnatural angles until her bones pierced through her skin. She writhed in the dirt for a few seconds before going completely still.

Mason and Sophia crouched behind a towering stack of concrete rebar. They covered their ears and squeezed their eyes shut.

Eon spotted their hiding place and waddled to the corner of his playpen. He grabbed his dense tungsten teething ring and hurled it through the bars. The alloy projectile crossed the factory floor at an impossible velocity to punch a clean hole through the concrete rebar.

The tungsten ring shattered Mason's skull on impact and ricocheted violently off the brick wall. The metal projectile struck Sophia in the chest to cave in her sternum. Both of them slumped against the debris with empty eyes.

Eon watched the bodies settle into the dust. He let out a bored sigh and crawled back to the center of his blankets to look for another toy.

Krax racked the bolt of his rifle and ejected a spent brass casing onto the grating. He looked down at the twisted limbs and bleeding corpses littering the processing line.

The surviving workers stood frozen in place with wide eyes locked on the toddler.

Krax rested the barrel of his weapon against his shoulder and gestured toward the carnage.

"The boy breaks his toys quickly," Krax ordered the nearest sentries. "Get the shovels and clear the floor. The conveyor belts need to be running before the next shift."
