Global Lords: Starting with Female Hero Fusion
Chapter 223 - 222: New Talent Competition (1)"Monitor?"
The word caught Zhao Chi’s attention.
Zhao Huai nodded. "That’s right. It’s to prevent the other side from cheating."
"People can cheat?"
"Of course. It’s a virtual battlefield, after all."
’How is that even possible?’
Zhao Chi asked, "Then can you detect it in time?"
Zhao Huai smiled. "Don’t worry. We’re your sponsors, so we both have monitoring privileges. We can see fluctuations in the virtual data. The two of us won’t have any problem."
Zhao Jiao added, "If someone could cheat so well that we couldn’t detect it, then we wouldn’t be able to fight them anyway. But experts at that level don’t need to cheat."
Zhao Huai said, "Come on, let’s find a place to sit."
This virtual battlefield was different from the showroom they’d seen last time.
It was more like an arena.
Or, to be more precise, a coliseum.
The massive battlefield was still in the center, but it was now surrounded by many tiers of seating.
Tier upon tier of seats formed the outer walls of the arena.
Although there were some people around, the venue was so huge that it still felt deserted.
Most people were gathered near the entrance.
The seats in the distance were all empty.
Zhao Chi sighed. "Just how many people can this virtual battlefield hold? There are over a thousand of us, and we don’t even fill 1% of the stands."
’Forget 1%, we probably haven’t even filled one ten-thousandth of the seats.’
Zhao Huai said, "Theoretically, there’s no upper limit. But the total number of spectators isn’t just a thousand-plus people. We’re in Battlefield 3; there are people in the other battlefields, too."
Zhao Jiao said, "Lü Hong’s match is starting soon. Let’s go to Battlefield 4. Just select ’Transfer’ in the system."
As soon as she finished speaking, Zhao Jiao’s figure flickered and vanished.
’No wonder I was seeing people appear and disappear around me.’
’I just thought they were logging out of or into the virtual battlefield.’
’Turns out they were just switching arenas.’
Zhao Huai asked, "Do you know how to switch? I’ll wait for you."
Lü Hong nodded. "No problem."
Zhao Chi quickly opened the system menu.
[Current Location: Battlefield 3]
He clicked ’Switch Battlefield.’
[Please Select a Battlefield]
There were nine battlefields in total, numbered 1 through 9.
Zhao Chi selected Battlefield 4 but didn’t confirm it just yet.
"Alright, I’ve got it. Let’s go."
In an instant, all three of them switched over.
Zhao Jiao was already waiting for them.
Battlefield 4 was identical to Battlefield 3; only the spectators were different.
There were only about 300 people here.
Far fewer than in the previous arena.
’If that’s the case,’ Zhao Chi thought, ’the last arena had about 1,000 people, and this one has 300. And there are still seven other battlefields...’
’It seems the number of spectators is well over a thousand.’
’The total might even be over 5,000.’
’If so, the ticket revenue alone would be 250 Gold Coins.’
’That makes a lot more sense.’
As Zhao Chi glanced around, Zhao Jiao noticed his confusion.
"Neither Lü Hong nor his opponent, Liu Neng, are famous, so not many people are watching them. The crowds are probably watching Jiang Die’s and Yuan Zhao’s matches right now."
Lü Hong chuckled. "The fewer people watching, the better. A big crowd would just make me nervous."
Zhao Huai said, "Don’t worry. The betting odds are higher on Liu Neng, so you’re favored to win this first match. You’ve got this."
Zhao Jiao added, "It’s almost time. Head back to your territory and get ready. The match starts in twenty minutes."
Lü Hong nodded. "Alright, I’m heading back now."
He nodded to Zhao Chi and the others, and his figure vanished.
’You can teleport directly to your territory from here?’
’Without any restrictions?’
But seeing the unfazed expressions on Zhao Huai and Zhao Jiao’s faces, he realized this must be common knowledge.
Zhao Chi didn’t want to ask.
But asking a question cost nothing.
If he could confirm a piece of information with a single sentence, he was definitely going to ask.
"Um... can you really teleport directly back to your territory from here? Without any restrictions?"
Zhao Huai waved his hand dismissively. "Of course. How else would you get back? You think you have to go all the way home just to teleport?"
Zhao Chi said, "I thought the match would just start automatically with the lineup we set up beforehand."
Zhao Jiao remarked, "It seems there are still some gaps in your common knowledge."
Zhao Chi sighed. "How am I supposed to know about such minor details? I’m going to check out the other battlefields. I’ll be back in a bit."
Zhao Huai nodded. "Yeah, go ahead. It’s a good idea to watch the other competitors’ matches. It’s always an advantage to scout your opponents beforehand."
He switched to Battlefield 1.
It was packed.
There had to be three thousand people there.
The entire area near the entrance was full, with large crowds spilling out to either side.
It made sense; watching a match is always more exciting with a crowd.
People had also consciously gathered in groups.
However, it seemed the aisle served as a dividing line, with each side of the crowd supporting a different contestant.
Only one couple sat far off to the side, cuddling.
"Sir, would you like to buy something to eat? It’s very cheap."
A vendor in a maid outfit stood beside him, asking with a smile.
"They sell food here? Is it real or virtual?"
The maid vendor chuckled. "It’s virtual, of course, which is why it’s so cheap. You can buy the 20 Copper Coin combo. It comes with ten different snacks, enough to last you the whole match."
As she spoke, a light flashed, and a flat wooden tray appeared in her hands.
It was loaded with snacks.
French fries, orange juice, meat skewers, spicy strips, fried shrimp, grilled sausages, donuts...
Zhao Chi almost lost his composure.
It felt like he was back in his original world.
But then again, this world had these things too, of course.
"Sir, the food is virtual, so you don’t have to worry about gaining weight. You can eat to your heart’s content and satisfy your cravings. Ten items for just 20 Copper Coins, it’s a real bargain."
Copper Coins really wasn’t expensive.
But Zhao Chi declined.
He had a battle to fight soon.
He was, however, very interested in the vendor’s maid outfit.
Not in a personal way—Zhao Chi was now extremely interested in all kinds of Female’s Fashion.
"Is that outfit you’re wearing a costume? Does it have any Attributes?"
The vendor glanced from side to side, then leaned in conspiratorially. "It’s not a costume, of course, just some Ordinary clothes. So if you want the... authentic ones, they’re pretty cheap. This set I’m wearing is only 3 Silver Coins."
Zhao Chi quickly waved his hands. "That’s not what I meant. I was just... never mind."
"I can sell you just the socks, too. 1 Silver Coin," she offered.
The maid vendor suggestively lifted her foot.
Zhao Chi was speechless.
’He could get as many of those as he wanted.’
’Practically every woman in his territory had already been issued new Silk Stockings; there were piles of the old ones.’
’Besides, the women in his territory bathed several times a day and were all gorgeous. Theirs were clean and came from attractive women, so to speak.’
Zhao Chi shook his head. "No, thanks. I’m going to look somewhere else."
He switched to Battlefield 2.
It was practically deserted.
There were only a few dozen people in the entire arena.
Two people were whispering, but Zhao Chi could still hear them clearly.
He kept switching.
After checking all nine battlefields, he estimated the total number of spectators was somewhere over ten thousand.
Zhao Chi hadn’t expected there to be so many people at all.
These were just the preliminary rounds, so the matches were spread across different arenas.
’But for the later rounds, wouldn’t all the spectators be gathered in a single arena?’
’Could a tournament between just five villages really have this much pull?’
Zhao Chi asked Zhao Huai about it.
Zhao Huai chuckled. "It might look like a tournament between five villages, but it’s really a competition between two towns. Broadening the scope, you could even say it’s an Ice River County competition. Plus, it only happens once a year, so everyone treats it as a big recreational event. Of course it draws a crowd."
"But aren’t tickets for 5 Silver Coins still a bit pricey?"
Silver Coins. That was like five hundred bucks.
If Zhao Chi were just an Ordinary person, he probably wouldn’t spend that much money just to watch a Lord competition.
A Lord, on the other hand, would gladly pay to observe other people’s matches.
Zhao Huai explained, "There are cheaper tickets for just 1 Silver Coin. The only catch is that you can’t move your camera freely; you’re stuck with the official broadcast view."
Silver Coin was reasonable.
Not being able to move the camera freely was just like watching a TV broadcast.
Besides, the official camera work might even be more professional.
"Alright, it’s about to start." Zhao Jiao jutted her chin toward the arena.
The battlefield below them transformed.
The complex terrain from before was gone, replaced by a simple split of two environments.
On the left was a vast, green grassland.
On the right, a large forest.
The transition where the two Terrain types met was perfectly natural.
A man was standing in the center of the battlefield.
He was a middle-aged man in a black uniform—the host.
The host smiled and began to speak:
"Dear friends!
"Welcome to the River Valley Town Virtual Training Ground for the *Rookie Competition*, hosted by Beiliu Village and Binhu Village!
"We’d also like to thank our co-sponsors: Nangu Village, Jinsha Village, and Stream Village!
"This year’s competition will follow the traditional rules, with no changes. Our first match is set to begin in one minute!
"For those of you looking to place bets, please do so now. Betting will close once the battle begins.
"The odds will be less favorable for the next round, so don’t miss this opportunity!
"Now, allow me to introduce our two contestants!
"On the right, we have Liu Neng from Nangu Village, representing the elegant and agile Elf Race!
"And on the left, from Stream Village, is Lü Hong, using the conventional yet incredibly high-potential Human Race!
"And now... let the match begin!"
With that command,
Zhao Chi suddenly saw several coordinate markers appear.
The markers indicated the positions of both sides, allowing for better tracking.
There were seven markers in total.
They marked the positions of each Lord, their main armies, their Territory Stones, and the official camera view.
There were three victory conditions.
Fulfilling any one of them would secure a win.
First: The enemy Lord is killed.
Second: The enemy’s Territory Stone is destroyed.
Third: If the battle ends in a draw, the side with the higher score wins.
The logic was easy enough to follow.
The Lord is the most important unit. If the Lord dies, the rest of the battle is meaningless.
Therefore, killing the enemy Lord meant victory.
If you couldn’t kill the enemy Lord but managed to destroy their Territory Stone, that also counted as a win.
This simulated the territory being conquered.
If neither the enemy Lord was killed nor their Territory Stone was destroyed by the time the match timer ran out...
...then victory would be decided by score.
Soldiers for both sides appeared on the battlefield.
The battle between Lü Hong and Liu Neng had begun.
Each side had fifty men.
Liu Neng’s Elves were all positioned in the trees, waiting for Lü Hong’s Human army to advance.
Lü Hong didn’t charge in recklessly. Instead, he took a wide detour, circling deep into the forest in an attempt to flank and attack the enemy’s Territory Stone.
After waiting for a long time, Liu Neng realized something was amiss and quickly had his forces fall back.
The two armies met in the forest and immediately engaged.
Skills flew in every direction.
All sorts of buffs flared to life.
The Elves’ Constitution and Power were slightly weaker, putting them at a disadvantage in close combat with the Humans.
But if Liu Neng didn’t engage in melee, Lü Hong would just lead his Humans in a mad dash for the Territory Stone, ignoring the Elven archers firing at his back and using Treatment to heal as he ran.
Liu Neng’s army fired for a good while but only managed to kill eight members of the Human Race.
But by then, Lü Hong was already near the Territory Stone.
"Damn it! Follow me and stop them! The rest of you, move to the flanks and keep shooting!"
Liu Neng led a group to charge and intercept them.
But in a surprise move, Lü Hong counter-charged, turning to surround Liu Neng himself.
The two groups immediately fell upon each other in a bloody melee.
The Elves on the flanks could no longer fire without risking friendly fire.
But they couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
After all, their Lord, Liu Neng, was trapped and couldn’t escape.
The Elves on the flanks had no choice but to charge into the fray themselves.
And so, a chaotic, close-quarters brawl erupted.
It looked more like a street brawl than a battle.
But it didn’t matter, so long as it led to a win.
Before long, Liu Neng’s body flickered and he vanished from the battle.
The instant Liu Neng died, the outcome was decided.
Liu Neng’s remaining forces all disappeared.
All that remained on the field was a battered Lü Hong and his dozen or so Human Race Militia.
Lü Hong was smiling, though.
He had won, after all.
Zhao Jiao said, "Not bad. A win is a win. Zhao Chi, your match is up soon. Go get ready."
Zhao Huai added, "I put a bet on you, so you’d better win. Xiao Rui is definitely no match for you."
Zhao Chi nodded. "I definitely won’t lose to him. Just wait to collect your winnings."
His figure flickered, and he was back in his territory.
