Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Ambush

Bena said to everyone,

"Listen up. Our enemies are most likely from the Blood Saber Gang, and their strength is not to be underestimated."

"However, you don’t need to worry too much."

"We’re plenty strong ourselves."

"When the fight starts, Lanton and I will take charge of intercepting their strongest members head-on."

"Zhou Yiming, focus on healing me and Lanton."

"Neil, as a Mutant Hunter, you must be an expert with traps, right?"

Neil nodded and gave an OK sign.

"No problem."

Bena nodded in satisfaction and said to Neil,

"You’re in charge of setting traps. Weaken the enemy’s combat strength as much as possible."

Neil replied, "Understood. I’ll use the environment here to set some traps and try to inflict some damage on the enemy without giving away our position."

Bena then said to Hawke, "Hawke, you’re a good fighter, but we haven’t had time to train together. Just provide support from behind me and Lanton. I need you to deal a fatal blow to the enemy at a critical moment."

Hawke clenched his fist and said, "I’ll watch for the right moment. The second I spot a weakness, I’ll strike."

Bena turned to Zhou Mei.

"Zhou Mei, you’re fast enough. Use your speed to clear out the small fry on the fringes. Reduce their numbers as much as you can."

Zhou Mei nodded.

"Not a problem. It’s almost dark. That’s when I’m in my element."

Finally, Bena spoke to No. 2:

"No. 2, you’re responsible for reconnaissance and monitoring the enemy’s movements. Report back to us in real time."

No. 2 answered, "Understood. I’ll use the high ground for reconnaissance to make sure I have eyes on their every move."

Bena was satisfied with everyone’s response. He knew that in a tense situation like this, victory depended on each person playing to their strengths.

With their preparations complete, the entire team went on high alert, awaiting the Blood Saber Gang’s arrival.

Before long, the Blood Saber Gang’s forces appeared at the edge of the abandoned building complex. They also seemed to have sensed something, as they began to slow down and advance cautiously.

Receiving scouting intel from No. 2 that the enemy was approaching, Bena said to the others in a low voice,

"Get ready. Stick to the plan."

Looking at the abandoned community in the distance, Blood Saber frowned slightly.

A bad feeling welled up inside him.

Blood Saber was a battle-hardened veteran and had a much keener sense of danger than ordinary people; otherwise, he never would have survived so many fights.

One of his underlings ran up to him excitedly and whispered in his ear,

"Boss, we found them. The bastards are hiding in there."

Blood Saber nodded, signaling his men to proceed with caution.

He didn’t think Bena’s group would be completely unprepared. After all, anyone who dared to recruit members openly in October Town had to have some degree of strength and confidence.

Still, he was quite confident in his own men.

"Everyone, be careful. The enemy might have set up an ambush inside the abandoned community."

Blood Saber commanded, a hint of vigilance in his eyes.

His men nodded one after another, showing they understood.

The Blood Saber Gang’s forces began to approach the abandoned community. They spread out, advancing and searching cautiously.

However, just as they entered the community, disaster struck unexpectedly.

A not-so-loud explosion rang out from one of the buildings.

"Dammit, it’s a trap!" Blood Saber’s expression changed. He hadn’t expected them to actually set up an ambush here.

’They were too fast. We were right on their tail, yet they still had time to set traps.’

’And they’d placed it right on a path we were bound to search. The enemy is clearly very experienced.’

He rushed to the man’s side. After a quick inspection, his face turned ugly.

He had thought the explosion sounded small, and now, seeing his subordinate’s condition, he instantly understood why.

The man’s injury wasn’t fatal. The mine’s blast was clearly weak; it had only blown off his lower left leg.

He lightly kicked at the fragments on the ground.

The enemy’s trap was simple: a pressure-trigger device connected to a small, homemade landmine.

This type of mine had a very small charge. It couldn’t kill anyone, but its design was viciously cunning.

These types of instantly-detonating mines are often called "pressure-plate mines" or "instant-detonation mines," exploding the moment they are stepped on or touched.

It would explode the moment someone stepped on it, but the blast was very weak.

Watching his man writhing on the ground, clutching his left leg, Blood Saber’s expression grew extremely grim.

’Their intention is simple: to deliberately create wounded men.’

’The purpose of the traps isn’t to kill, but to injure, weakening our overall combat effectiveness.’

’If we treat him, we’ll have to divert manpower, reducing our fighting strength.’

’If we don’t, he’ll bleed out and die, which will crush our morale.’

Blood Saber’s heart sank. He knew he had underestimated his opponent.

’A brilliant way to kill two birds with one stone. No matter what I choose, it’s the wrong move.’

He noticed many of the surrounding men looking on with worry and fear as their comrade writhed on the ground.

He understood that if he didn’t make the right choice, his men would surely just go through the motions during the subsequent search.

He immediately ordered, "Get the medic over here! Treat our injured brother."

"Everyone else, keep moving, and be extremely careful."

At Blood Saber’s command, two men immediately went forward to give the injured subordinate emergency treatment.

The man’s injury wasn’t actually life-threatening; he had only lost his foot and a third of his lower leg.

The two men quickly applied a simple dressing to his wound and then moved him to the rear of the formation.

After this small incident, the Blood Saber Gang’s forces became even more cautious.

However, they had only taken a few more steps when another explosion rang out.

It was immediately followed by a scream from not far away.

Blood Saber slammed his fist into a nearby wall.

"Everyone, halt! Do not advance any further."

There was an icy chill in Blood Saber’s voice.

’I can’t believe they actually littered the entire community with traps.’

’These traps can’t inflict major damage, but their goal is obvious: weaken our overall combat strength by creating more wounded.’

’If this continues, both our combat power and morale will plummet.’

"Everyone, halt your advance. Give me a moment to think of a countermeasure." A dark glint flashed in Blood Saber’s eyes.
