Chapter 183: Chapter 180: Recruitment

Bena nodded in satisfaction. Jack’s strength far exceeded his expectations; he was a fine addition to their combat strength.

Bena looked at Zhou Mei.

They had been together for some time now, and a simple glance was all it took for Zhou Mei to understand what Bena meant.

Zhou Mei took a step forward, two green daggers appearing in her hands.

Bena signaled for Zhou Mei to spar with Jack and test his true strength.

Zhou Mei nodded. She was also quite interested in Jack’s swordsmanship. After all, in the wasteland, strength was the only law.

The two walked to the center of the tavern, and the surrounding crowd automatically cleared an open space.

Jack gripped his long blade tightly while Zhou Mei held her twin daggers. They exchanged a look and immediately launched into a fierce clash.

Jack’s swordsmanship was all broad, powerful strokes, each slash packed with force. Zhou Mei, on the other hand, countered with her agile movements and dexterous dagger techniques.

With a flicker of movement, Zhou Mei appeared before Jack like a phantom, closing the distance between them in an instant.

A flicker of surprise showed in Jack’s eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. He spun his long blade and attacked.

Zhou Mei’s movements were fluid as she deftly dodged Jack’s attack, her daggers striking toward his vital points like venomous snakes.

The two engaged in a furious clash in the center of the tavern, the glint of steel a dazzling, rapid-fire blur.

They traded blows, and for a moment, they seemed evenly matched.

Bena watched their fight closely. He noticed that while Jack was powerful, he seemed a step slower in speed and reaction time.

Zhou Mei, on the other hand, was the exact opposite; her speed and agility gave her the advantage in the fight.

At first, they were able to trade blows evenly, but soon, Zhou Mei’s advantage in speed became more and more obvious.

After some twenty-odd exchanges, one of Zhou Mei’s daggers was pressed lightly against his neck.

If this had been a real fight, Jack would have been dead long ago. After all, their earlier exchanges had been held back, with neither party landing a truly injurious blow.

At Zhou Mei’s speed, Jack would have already suffered countless wounds.

The accumulation of toxins would have inevitably caused his physical condition to deteriorate drastically.

Though defeated, Jack showed no sign of frustration in his eyes. Instead, they held a look of admiration.

"I lost. You are all truly powerful." Jack sheathed his long blade, showing his respect to Bena and Zhou Mei.

Bena stood up and extended a hand to Jack.

"You’re quite skilled yourself. We welcome you to join us."

Jack grasped Bena’s hand, his eyes flashing with resolve.

"I will contribute my strength to the Stronghold."

With Jack joining, many others in the tavern became eager to try their luck.

After all, joining a powerful enough group meant having solid support at your back and the promise of a better life ahead.

Bena was very pleased that Jack had joined.

Though not as skilled as Zhou Mei, he was still a capable fighter in the wasteland.

Moreover, he was humble; instead of being discouraged by his defeat, he showed a strong desire to join.

Bena believed that with the right nurturing, Jack could become a key asset to the Stronghold.

After Jack, a few more people stepped forward to apply, but their skills were average, with no one particularly standing out.

Bena wasn’t discouraged. He knew that in the wasteland, true talent was a rare find you stumbled upon, not something you could actively seek out.

He had Zhou Mei and Hawke continue recruiting in the tavern while he took Neil and Zhou Yiming to scout the town, hoping to discover some potential talent.

After scouting the town for a while, Bena and the others hadn’t found any particularly suitable candidates.

October Town wasn’t a particularly large settlement. While it had plenty of residents, most were ordinary wanderers and merchants, not exceptional combatants.

Bena had no intention of giving up. He knew that in the wasteland, real talent was often hidden in the most unlikely of places.

He had Neil and Zhou Yiming continue the search in town while he returned to the tavern to keep observing and evaluating the applicants.

Just as Bena was about to leave the tavern to check other places, a burly, imposing man walked up to him.

"Hello, I heard you’re recruiting people?" the large man’s voice was deep and powerful.

Bena looked up at him. The man was a full two meters tall with well-defined muscles—clearly a strength-based Warrior.

"That’s right, we are," Bena nodded. "Who are you? Do you have any special skills?"

"My name is Munich. I used to be a Gladiator."

The large man introduced himself. "My strength and combat skills are exceptional. I’m confident I can be of great help to you."

Bena narrowed his eyes.

Gladiator. An ancient and brutal profession, said to have existed even before the Cataclysm. A special kind of Warrior.

Some were captured warriors, others were slaves who had lost their freedom, all forced to take part in this bloody form of entertainment.

In dim, lightless cellars, they were forced to fight all sorts of ferocious beasts, and even artificially modified mutant creatures.

These creatures usually possessed extraordinary strength and speed, and the Gladiators had to rely on their own combat skills and survival instincts just to stay alive in the brutal slaughter.

For a Gladiator, every fight was a challenge to the limits of life itself, and the ultimate test of courage and strength.
