Chapter 217: Chapter 197: The Log
Bena and Lin Hao warily scanned their surroundings, ready to face any potential danger. The air in the laboratory felt somewhat heavy, and a faint chemical smell hung in the air.
"Everyone, be careful. The equipment here might still be operational," Bena said in a low voice.
Lin Hao nodded and began to carefully examine the equipment in the lab, searching for potential clues.
"Captain Bena, look at this," Lin Hao said, pointing to a display screen on a piece of equipment. "This machine seems to still be running."
Lin Hao walked over and closely observed the information on the display screen.
[Please swipe card]
Lin Hao frowned as he looked at the content flashing on the screen.
Bena asked,
"What’s written on it?"
Lin Hao replied,
"It says to swipe a card."
A confused look crossed Bena’s face.
"Swipe a card?"
Bena walked over to Lin Hao’s side, glanced at the display, and then looked around, searching for a possible card slot or keyhole.
He noticed a rather inconspicuous card slot next to the machine, but there was no key or card.
"It looks like we need to find a specific card to activate this machine."
Bena said gravely, "Lin Hao, do you know anything about this?"
Lin Hao shook his head.
"I only know that this is likely some kind of identity verification or activation mechanism. Security measures like this were common in some high-tech facilities before the Cataclysm."
"It probably requires authorized personnel to activate it."
Bena nodded. He understood this meant they needed to find a specific card, possibly a keycard or an ID card, to activate the machine.
He immediately ordered his team members to search the lab for any possible cards.
"Everyone be careful. Keep an eye out for any possible cards or keys," Bena reminded them.
The team members immediately split up and began to search the lab carefully.
They checked every corner and every place an item might be hidden.
Just then, a team member found a metal card on the floor. He immediately picked it up and walked over to Bena and Lin Hao.
"Captain, look. Is this the card we’re looking for?" The team member handed the card to Bena.
Bena took the card. He saw it had some complex lines and patterns on it and looked very high-tech.
He handed the card to Lin Hao. "Lin Hao, see if this is the card we can use to activate the machine."
Lin Hao took the card and carefully examined the text on it.
[Name: Astu Byrne]
[Level: P3]
A look of delight crossed his face as he nodded. "This should be the card we need."
Bena and Lin Hao walked to the machine and inserted the card into the slot.
As the card was inserted, the information on the display screen changed.
[Identity verification successful]
[Welcome, Researcher Astu Byrne]
[P3 level clearance activated]
[Due to your limited clearance, only partial... has been activated]
[To activate more..., please use a higher-level ID card]
The information on the display made both Bena and Lin Hao breathe a sigh of relief. It seemed they had found the right card.
"Looks like our luck is pretty good," Bena said in a low voice.
Lin Hao sounded a bit regretful.
"It’s a shame this isn’t a top-level clearance card."
Bena shook his head.
"Just finding an ID card is lucky enough. This was probably dropped when someone left in a hurry."
"This lab seems to be for research in genetic engineering and biological modification,"
Lin Hao explained,
"These operating instructions probably tell us how to use this equipment."
"But P3 clearance is a bit low. According to what’s shown here, we can only use 30% of the equipment at most."
"I’ll see if I can open the experiment logs."
"This is my first time encountering such complete pre-Cataclysm equipment. Maybe it contains information from before the Cataclysm."
Lin Hao began to operate the machine, trying to access the experiment logs.
Meanwhile, Bena continued to observe their surroundings, remaining vigilant.
The other team members didn’t make any rash moves either. After all, with some power restored to the facility, there was no telling if a defense system might be activated. It would be trouble if they triggered an attack by wandering around aimlessly.
He carefully identified the text on the screen and followed the operating instructions.
After some effort, Lin Hao successfully opened the experiment logs.
Densely packed text and data appeared on the screen, recording some of the lab’s research content from before the Cataclysm.
"Captain Bena, it’s here! There really are experiment logs," Lin Hao shouted excitedly.
Bena walked over and saw the experiment logs displayed on the screen, but it was all densely packed pre-Cataclysm text that he couldn’t understand at all.
"These logs record the lab’s research content. We might be able to find some useful information,"
Lin Hao said in a low voice.
[Name: Astu Byrne]
[Level: P3 Researcher]
[Star Shining 2105, June 12]
[Experiment Log]
[The team has made a breakthrough in gene extraction technology.]
[After countless trials and failures, we have extracted the night-vision gene from felines. Supervisor Fimend has named this night-vision gene KY-123.]
[Although we experienced many failures before, we also gained a great deal of experience.]
[Extracting KY-123 is our first step, but it is definitely not our last.]
[Tomorrow, we will continue to extract more KY-123 to increase the success rate and attempt to optimize the extraction process.]
[Star Shining 2105, June 13]
[Experiment Log]
[KY-123 successfully extracted again. Time taken was reduced by 10% compared to the initial experiment. Current progress is satisfactory.]
