Chapter 266 - 221: Ambush 2

Chapter 266: Chapter 221: Ambush 2

"Watch out. There might be mutated creatures up ahead," Leo warned the team. "Everyone, stay vigilant and be ready for an attack."

The team’s scouts moved ahead quickly to reconnoiter the surroundings. They discovered tracks left by mutated creatures but successfully avoided a direct confrontation through nimble evasion and clever tactics.

After a few days of trekking, they finally neared the treasure location marked on the map. But just then, a group of hostile raiders appeared in their line of sight, clearly after the treasure as well.

"Looks like we aren’t the only ones who know about this treasure," Zhou Mei said, tightening her grip on her weapon, her eyes wary.

"Get ready to fight!" Leo commanded.

The team quickly dispersed, using the terrain of the ruins for cover. As the raiders drew closer, a fierce firefight erupted between the two sides. Bullets whizzed through the air, and flashes from energy weapons lit up the ruins.

"Hold formation! Don’t let them break us up!" Zhou Mei shouted.

Led by Zhou Mei and Leo, the team members demonstrated superb combat skills and teamwork. With precise shots and agile movements, they gradually suppressed the raiders’ assault.

After a fierce battle, the raiders were finally overwhelmed and began to retreat. Zhou Mei and Leo didn’t give chase, knowing their true objective was the treasure.

"Hurry, we don’t have much time," Zhou Mei said, pointing deeper into the ruins. "The treasure should be in the basement just ahead."

The team quickly entered the ruins and found the entrance to the basement. They carefully descended the dilapidated stairs and finally came to a massive basement door.

"Looks like this is where the treasure is hidden," Leo said, examining the lock on the door. "We’ll need tools to open it."

The team’s tech expert stepped forward, pulling out a set of lock-picking tools. After some effort, the lock finally gave way. As the heavy door swung open, a wave of stale air washed over them.

"It could be dangerous in there. Everyone, be careful," Zhou Mei warned.

They switched on their lights, illuminating the dim basement. It was filled with all kinds of ancient chests and containers—this was clearly the treasure they had been searching for.

"Quick, let’s get the treasure back," Leo ordered, directing the team to start moving the haul.

Just as they were getting busy, the basement suddenly began to shake. It seemed the rest of the raiders were trying to destroy the treasure.

"There’s no time, we have to hurry!" Zhou Mei urged anxiously.

The team members picked up the pace, rapidly hauling the treasure to the surface. Just after the last item was moved out, the entire basement suddenly collapsed, kicking up a massive cloud of dust.

"That was close!" Leo said, brushing the dust from his clothes. "We did it. Now, let’s get this treasure back to the shelter."

With the treasure in tow, they began the journey home. Though they encountered more difficulties along the way, they ultimately overcame every obstacle through the team’s strength and ingenuity, returning safely to the shelter with their prize.

When Zhou Mei and Leo led the team back to the shelter, they received a hero’s welcome. Their success not only brought valuable resources to the shelter but also gave its residents hope and confidence.

Bena stood at the head of the conference room, a detailed map of the shelter’s surroundings spread across the table before him. His sharp gaze swept over the team members seated around the table—each one a hand-picked elite with unique skills and experience.

"We’re facing a group of unidentified invaders," Bena said, his voice low and powerful. "They could be after our resources, or they might simply be here to wreak havoc. Our mission is to ensure the safety of the shelter. Failure is not an option."

"We’ve analyzed their likely routes of advance and their tactics," Bena said, pointing to several marks on the map. "We’ll set up defenses here, here, and here, using our familiarity with the terrain to lay traps and establish ambush points."

"Captain, do we have any solid intel on their strength?" a team member asked.

"Our intel is limited, but I can say for certain they aren’t your average raiders," Bena replied. "They’re organized and well-equipped. We must be prepared for a serious fight."

"So what’s the plan, Bena?" another team member asked.

"We’re splitting into three squads," Bena began, assigning roles. "Squad One is responsible for the eastern defenses. Squad Two will take the west. I will lead Squad Three as a quick reaction force, ready to provide support at a moment’s notice."

"Our defensive works need to be reinforced," Bena continued. "Use the shelter’s available resources to set up barricades, spike strips, and traps. We also need to establish more lookout posts to ensure we spot any enemy movements early."

"Captain, what if there are too many of them?" someone asked.

"Our advantage is our knowledge of the terrain and our defensive works," Bena answered. "Even if they outnumber us, we’ll make sure they know this is our turf. We won’t give them an easy win."

After assigning the tasks, Bena once again stressed the importance of the mission and encouraged everyone to give it their all.

"I know this won’t be easy, but our unity and our wits are our greatest weapons. Let’s face this challenge together. For the future of the shelter, and for all of us."

The conference room filled with thunderous applause, every person inspired by Bena’s words.

Afterward, the teams began their intense preparations. They dug deep pits in the wasteland, lining them with sharp spikes, and established sniper nests in high positions. The defensive works were also being rapidly strengthened; the perimeter walls were reinforced, and multiple barriers were erected at the entrance.

Bena’s quick reaction squad also trained intensely. They practiced rapid assembly drills and learned how to quickly locate and strike targets in the dark. A single belief was drilled into every member: protect our home, and never back down.

A few days later, on a moonless night, the invaders stealthily approached the shelter. They split into several groups, attempting to infiltrate without a sound. However, the moment they stepped into the designated trap zone, they triggered the alarms.

"Go!" Bena gave the order from the command room, his voice reaching every Guardian’s ears via radio.

In an instant, the shelter’s defense systems fully activated. Traps sprang, and spikes in the deep pits impaled the invaders. Snipers from the high ground opened fire, their bullets streaking across the night sky on deadly trajectories.

The quick reaction squad also deployed swiftly, charging toward the invaders with weapons raised. Caught completely off guard, the invaders’ formation instantly fell into disarray.

Some of the invaders attempted to fight back but were quickly suppressed by precise shooting and swift assaults. Bena’s squad moved like ghosts in the dark, silently reaping the lives of their enemies.

After a night of fierce fighting, the invading force was utterly crushed. Their bodies littered the wasteland, becoming nourishment for the soil.

The shelter’s defenders were exhausted, but their eyes gleamed with the light of victory. Bena emerged from the command room, standing on a high perch and surveying the aftermath.

He knew this victory wasn’t merely due to their thorough preparations, but more so to their love for their home and their respect for life.

"We did it," Bena said to his team members as they approached. "But we can’t let our guard down. The wasteland has more challenges waiting for us."

"We’re ready," the team members replied in unison, their gazes resolute. "Whatever challenges the future holds, we’ll face them together."

The residents of the shelter gathered to celebrate their victory.

They sang and danced, sharing their joy with one another.

Though they knew this was but one of countless battles to come, it strengthened their belief that as long as they stood united, there was no hardship they could not overcome.
