Inside the Glimmer District, tension hung heavily in the air, mixed with the foul scent of decay and blood that had spread through the streets.
The once-clean roads were now covered with blood, broken glass, discarded weapons, and bodies.
Cries for help and miserable screams permeated the air, rising from different directions as people desperately tried to escape the nightmare unfolding around them.
The police had established several temporary defensive positions throughout the district, but those positions were slowly collapsing.
Their weapons were still firing while their bullets were still striking the mysterious creatures.
Unfortunately, nothing seemed to work.
Several corpses were scattered across the street while the remaining officers continued shooting sporadically toward the mysterious creature in the distance.
Their faces were pale, and some of them were trembling so badly that they could barely keep their weapons pointed in the right direction.
"We can’t stay here...." One officer whispered as he looked toward the creature.
"I can’t take this any longer. This is beyond my paygrade." Another officer lowered his weapon slightly.
Nobody reprimanded him.
Nobody told him to raise his gun.
They were all thinking the same thing.
Earlier, each of them were all brimming with confidence and sense of justice. But now, all of it had all vanished into thin air.
These creatures were not like ordinary beasts they’ve ever seen.
They could not be killed with guns.
Bullets passed through their bodies, and even when their flesh was torn apart, the black substance simply pulled itself back together.
Worse still, the creatures were spreading.
The police had started the battle with dozens of officers but now, they could barely recognize who was still human.
"Keep firing!" The captain shouted.
His voice was strained.
"Don’t let them get close!"
The officers obeyed, but their formation was already breaking apart.
Ta! Ta! Ta! Ta!
Gunfire echoed through the district.
A black creature recoiled as bullets tore through its chest, but the holes immediately closed. Another creature crawled across the side of a building before dropping onto the street.
Several officers opened fire.
The creature twisted its body unnaturally, avoiding some of the bullets before rushing toward them.
"Fall back!" An officer shouted.
The group began retreating.
While the cops were desperately trying to hold back the unknown creature, they failed to noticed one person.
For a minute, he had stopped moving with his head lowered while his hands hung loosely beside his body.
A strange tremor passed through his shoulders.
"What happened to you?" A nearby cop noticed him and turned around.
The officer slowly raised his head.
"Why is your face red?" He asked with a deep frown on his face
The man’s face was indeed strangely red.
Blood vessels bulged beneath his skin, spreading from his neck toward his cheeks while his breathing was heavy.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
The other cop took a cautious step toward him and asked.
"Are you injured?"
The officer’s head twitched and his mouth opened slightly but no word came out. Instead, something moved beneath his skin.
Noticing his strange behaviour, the officer panicked.
"Captain, something’s wrong here."
He took another step backward and immediately reached for his radio.
"Captain, do you copy?"
Unfortunately for him, static answered him.
"Captain?"
He pressed the radio again. "Captain, something is wrong with—"
Before the captain could respond over the radio, the officer standing before him suddenly twisted.
His body bent at an impossible angle.
Crack!
The sound of breaking bones echoed through the street.
Seeing this, the officer froze.
He watched as his partner’s back arched unnaturally and his head snapped toward the side.
His face rapidly turned black.
The skin around his cheeks darkened before spreading across his entire face, while his uniform suddenly began ripping apart.
Riiip!
His chest expanded and his stomach split open. Black flesh pushed through the torn uniform as something moved violently inside his body.
The cop stumbled backward.
"What..." His voice trembled.
The thing standing before him was no longer his partner. It was the creature they had been fighting and now, it had appeared among them.
Its stomach remained open, revealing nothing resembling normal organs.
Instead, countless black strands twisted inside its body.
The creature slowly raised its head.
Its mouth opened and a wet, distorted screech escaped from its throat.
"Screeech!"
The cop’s face was drained of color.
"This..." He stumbled backward again.
His hands trembled violently as he raised his gun and his finger found the trigger.
Ta! Tat! Tat!
The bullets struck the creature’s chest and black fluid exploded from its body.
For a moment, it staggered backward and then it raised its head again.
Nothing had changed.
Just then, the creature disappeared.
The cop’s eyes widened as a shadow flashed before him. The turned cop moved at breathtaking speed and appeared directly before his former partner.
"Nooooooo!" The cop cried.
The creature’s stomach suddenly opened wider and a long black tendril burst from within.
Ssssh!
The tendril shot toward the officer and wrapped around his waist.
"Get off me!"
He pulled with all his strength.
The tendril did not move.
Instead, another black tendril emerged from the creature’s stomach and pierced into his side and his body jerked violently.
"AAAGHH!" His scream echoed through the street.
The tendrils tightened around him and something began flowing through them.
Instantly, the officer’s strength slowly left his body.
His muscles weakened.
His knees buckled and his vision blurred.
He could feel something being pulled out of him, something deeper than blood.
It was his life force
The creature was draining his lifeforce while simultaneously forcing the black substance into his body.
His veins began turning black and he tried to scream again, but only a weak gasp escaped his throat.
His weapon fell from his hand.
Clang!
The gun struck the ground and his eyes remained wide open as his body continued to convulse.
"Help..." The word barely escaped his mouth.
Nobody came.
The surrounding officers were already staring at the scene in horror. Waking up from his shock, an officer shouted.
"Open fire!"
Ta! Ta! Ta! Ta!
The nearby cops opened fire at them
Bullets ripped through their body and black liquid splattered across the pavement.
The creature released its victim and staggered backward.
"Keep shooting!"
The officers fired repeatedly and the creature’s body was torn apart by the barrage. For several seconds, the police believed they had finally managed to kill one.
Then the scattered black flesh began moving.
It crawled across the ground and the pieces slowly came together.
The officers stared in disbelief.
"No..."
The black substance flowed across its body until it stood upright once again. The officers’ remaining courage began to disappear.
"How are we supposed to kill that?"
Nobody answered.
Just then the officer who had been attacked suddenly moved. His body convulsed and his spine bent backward.
Black lines spread across his neck.
One officer noticed it.
"Wait."
He slowly lowered his weapon. "He’s turning."
The infected officer raised his head and his eyes had become completely black.
His mouth opened and a strange sound escaped from his throat.
"Screech..."
The officer standing closest to him took a step backward.
"Get away from him!"
But it was too late.
The infected cop lunged forward.
A black tendril burst from his stomach and wrapped around another officer.
"Help!" The second officer screamed.
At once, his companions immediately opened fire.
Ta! Tat! Tat!
