Kurg moved closer to Kong’gong and sat down attentively, his earlier frustration almost completely forgotten. His eyes remained fixed on the old kobold with an eagerness Kong’gong had rarely seen from him. It was almost amusing how quickly curiosity had managed to overpower the thoughts that had been weighing on him since Ka’z left.
Kong’gong smiled quietly to himself. If nothing else, teaching the boy would give him something productive to focus on.
"We will start with Tier Zero, or primary magic..." Kong’gong began.
He placed his palm against the ground and slowly pulled upward. A section of earth responded immediately, rising with his hand before settling back into place when he released it.
"Primary magic is simply the ability to manipulate the elements freely without restrictions. The power of a person’s primary magic is usually based on their mana output, which of course scales as your core gets stronger."
Kurg’s eyes widened comically, and his jaw dropped as he stared at the patch of earth.
"You mean what we have been using all this while is the lowest form of magic?"
Kong’gong chuckled and nodded. "Exactly. What you and the others have been using is only the most basic expression of elemental magic. It is useful, but it barely scratches the surface of what a properly trained magus can accomplish."
Kurg stared at his own hands as though they had suddenly become unfamiliar. All this time, he had considered himself fortunate simply because he could manipulate earth.
He had watched Lan’ka and Tong’a use their abilities and believed that was what magic looked like. Now Kong’gong was telling him that everything they had considered powerful was merely the beginning.
"People capable of using magic are extremely valuable in the outside world, and for good reason. The true strength of a magus who knows what he or she is doing can be worth a thousand soldiers. That’s why the human kingdom I joined during my expedition beyond the Evergreen Forest didn’t care about my identity as a kobold. As long as I could use magic, there were many noble families and adventurer associations pleading for me to join them." Kong’gong explained, his expression becoming slightly nostalgic as he remembered the years he had spent traveling beyond the forest.
Kurg’s eyes sparkled. He had always known magic was important within Vaal’kor. The leadership of the colony had repeatedly fallen to those capable of awakening magical abilities, and Kong’gong himself was living proof of how powerful a talented magic user could become. However, hearing that entire human organizations had been willing to overlook his race simply because he could use magic gave him a completely different perspective.
"So tell me about Tier One magic!" Kurg demanded excitedly, leaning closer.
Kong’gong smiled at his enthusiasm. "Well, the first tier of magic simply requires strong mana output. As long as your magic circuits are developed enough, a magus can expel enough mana to cast a Tier One spell. It is generally said that Tier One spells are roughly three times more powerful than Tier Zero spells."
Buzz!
Kurg immediately jumped to his feet, grabbed Kong’gong by the front of his clothes and began shaking him. "Three times? You are exaggerating, right?"
Kong’gong merely laughed while allowing the young kobold to shake him. "Of course not. Have I ever lied to you?"
Kurg slowly released his clothes and stared at him with disbelief before sitting back down. Three times. If he could eventually cast spells that powerful, the strength of his magic would skyrocket. He could already imagine himself standing beside Ka’z and the others rather than being forced to watch them fight. The thought filled him with renewed determination.
"What about Tier Two spells?" he asked, his voice already carrying the excitement of someone who had become addicted to learning.
Kong’gong’s smile widened. "Tier Two spells are much more complicated. They are usually created by combining two spells of the same element into one more complex spell. Sometimes the same spell is combined with itself, while other times two completely different spells are merged together. The result is something considerably more powerful than either spell by itself."
Kurg’s eyes practically glittered.
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"
His excitement echoed throughout the chamber as he leaned forward like a child being shown something forbidden.
"Show me! Show me!"
Kong’gong sighed, although the smile on his face betrayed how amused he was. "Alright, alright. Calm down."
The old kobold stood and casually waved his hand toward the wall. A section of stone immediately slid aside, revealing a narrow passage hidden behind it. Kurg blinked at the opening before looking back at Kong’gong.
"Where are we going?"
"Outside, of course. If I use a Tier Two spell here, this entire colony will crumble under its power." Kong’gong chuckled.
Kurg’s eyes became even wider.
Without waiting for further explanation, he immediately ran into the passage. Kong’gong shook his head and followed after him, closing the hidden entrance behind them as they passed through the narrow shortcut.
The passage eventually connected to the main tunnel leading toward the colony’s entrance. The further they traveled, the louder the sounds of the outside world became until the cool breeze of the forest finally reached them. Kurg emerged from the cave and stopped in the clearing, waiting for Kong’gong to catch up.
The old kobold walked past him and gently caressed his hair before continuing forward.
"Stay behind me."
Kurg nodded obediently.
Kong’gong walked several meters away from the cave entrance before stopping. He slowly stretched out his hand, and the relaxed expression he had worn moments earlier disappeared. His face became unusually stern as his eyes focused on the empty forest ahead.
Casting a Tier Two spell was not something he could treat casually.
As a Gold Core magic beast, Tier Two spells represented the current limit of his magical abilities. Even after decades of practice, casting one still placed considerable strain on his body and mana core. He could not simply throw one around during battle without consequences. Normally, he needed enough distance and protection to give himself the time required to complete the spell.
He inhaled deeply.
Buzz!
A sand colored magic array appeared behind him.
Kurg’s eyes immediately focused on it, but then his expression changed when another magic array began forming within the first. The second circle spiraled halfway out from the first, and the two formations began rotating in opposite directions. One turned clockwise while the other turned anticlockwise, their edges overlapping as intricate runes began appearing across both formations.
The air around them became heavy.
Buzz!
The ground trembled beneath Kurg’s feet.
Birds scattered from the distant forest, their sudden flight drawing Kurg’s attention for a moment. Dozens of them rose from the treetops and disappeared deeper into the forest, apparently frightened by something they could not understand.
Kurg quickly returned his attention to Kong’gong.
He stepped closer to his master and immediately noticed something that made his expression change.
Sweat was running down Kong’gong’s face.
The old kobold’s jaw was clenched, and the two magic arrays behind him were trembling violently. At times, parts of the formations seemed to flicker as though they might collapse before suddenly stabilizing again.
Kurg had never seen Kong’gong struggle like this.
The old kobold had always seemed relaxed whenever he demonstrated magic. Even the Tier One Earth Spike spell had been cast with such effortless precision that Kurg had almost forgotten how difficult magic was supposed to be. Now, however, he could see just how much concentration was required to manipulate this level of power.
Kong’gong’s breathing became heavier as the two magic arrays finally stabilized.
He raised his hand toward the forest.
"Tier Two Earth Magic: Gaia’s Embrace!"
Buzz!
The forest shook.
At first, Kurg thought the trees themselves were being pulled from the earth. Several massive trees rose into the air from both sides of the distant clearing, their roots tearing through the soil and dragging enormous amounts of earth with them.
Then he realized what he was actually seeing and his eyes widened in horror.
Two enormous palms made entirely from earth were rising from beneath the forest floor. They were not merely large. They were gigantic. Each finger was wider than Kurg’s entire body, and the palms themselves stretched across a vast section of the forest.
Kurg instinctively took several steps backward. Compared to those hands, he was nothing more than an insect.
The two colossal palms continued rising until they faced each other from opposite sides of the forest.
Then they moved.
BOOOOM!
The hands slammed together.
Trees were crushed instantly between them, while enormous amounts of soil and shattered stone erupted outward. A powerful shockwave tore through the clearing and sent dust racing toward the cave entrance.
Kurg stood completely petrified.
The force of the spell left his entire body trembling. The thought of being caught between those two massive hands sent a chill down his spine, and for the first time he understood why Kong’gong had refused to demonstrate the spell inside the colony.
"How the hell can someone escape that?" Kurg gasped, staring at the enormous devastation left behind.
