Molu, Loki and Crow stood upon the battlement of the southern wall, their gazes fixed upon the forest beyond the gates as at least a hundred goblins raced into the southern forest in teams of five. There were twenty teams in total, each tasked with bringing back as much livestock as possible.
Molu watched them disappear between the trees one group after another, his expression remaining firm despite knowing exactly what he had asked these goblins to do. They were desperate, and desperation had forced them to turn civilians into hunters simply because there were no longer enough trained warriors to shoulder the burden alone.
"Stand watch and stay on standby in case any returning team is being pursued." Molu said to Loki, and the young hobgoblin nodded without question.
Even if no one had asked him, he would have done that.
Loki’s eyes remained fixed upon the forest as he watched the last of the hunting teams disappear beneath the canopy, his hands resting against the battlement. He had spent most of his life believing strength alone was enough to protect Ashmork, but the past few days had forced him to confront how helpless even a strong warrior could become when facing an enemy he could neither understand nor defeat.
Molu shifted his gaze toward Crow, who was standing a short distance away with his arms folded across his chest.
"The rest who didn’t volunteer will have to take part in drills and training in preparation for the enemy attack. I’ll have the women prepare meals with the few grains we could salvage from the fire. Every living soul within these walls must contribute to its survival." Molu declared, and Crow nodded without question.
He understood what Molu was trying to accomplish. They had fewer than thirty proper warriors remaining, and there was no guarantee the enemy would wait for them to recover. If Ka’z and his people attacked before the hunting teams returned, then even those who had never held a weapon would have to know how to defend themselves.
Molu looked up and stared at the setting sun, watching its orange glow spread across the distant horizon. It had taken some time to organize the teams, especially since the majority of them were civilians with little to no experience in hunting.
Actual hunters had been placed at the head of each group so they could guide the others, teach them how to identify tracks and keep them from wandering too far into dangerous territory.
Even then, Molu knew the arrangement was far from ideal. Twenty teams meant twenty groups moving through the forest at the same time, and if the enemy was truly watching them, then there was a possibility that all of them could be exposed.
Yet there was no better option. The granaries had burned, the farms had been destroyed, and the livestock that remained within the settlement was nowhere near enough to sustain three hundred goblins. If they did not recover food soon, starvation would become a greater threat than any enemy standing outside their walls.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the southern forest, Ka’z stood upon a thick tree branch while everyone else remained low against the uneven earth below. They had been waiting there for hours, concealed among the sparse vegetation and scattered trees, leaving Ka’z wondering if they had come a little too early.
The southern region was not as dense as the deeper parts of the Evergreen Forest, and the scarcity of trees made hiding more difficult, but the uneven terrain provided enough natural cover for his group to remain concealed.
Ka’z glanced toward the horizon and found himself momentarily distracted by the setting sun. Amber light stretched across the earth and painted the sky in warm shades of orange and gold, making the forest look almost peaceful despite what was about to happen within it. He enjoyed the sight for a few moments before his attention returned to the forest ahead.
Buzz!
Ka’z’s eyes slowly opened wider before he turned his head toward the north. His Divine Perception had picked up several approaching presences, but something immediately felt strange about them.
They were weak. Very weak.
Their presence reminded him of the civilian kobolds back in Vaal’kor rather than warriors preparing for a confrontation.
Ka’z’s brows furrowed slightly as he stared into the distance, trying to determine exactly what Ashmork had sent out this time. He had expected hunting parties, but after feeling the strength of the approaching group, he began to wonder whether the goblins had deliberately sent their weakest people into the forest.
Bam!
Ka’z shot off the tree branch, snapping it beneath the force of his movement as red steam poured from the gaps between his scales. Blood Empowerment surged through his body, causing his muscles to tighten as his physical strength exploded upward.
His team immediately saw him move and rose to their feet without hesitation before charging after him. The goblin hunter leading the approaching group quickly noticed Ka’z flying in their direction.
His eyes widened when he saw the small crimson scaled figure moving toward them at terrifying speed, and his gaze immediately lowered toward the group charging behind him. His face paled as realization struck him.
"Run!!!" He screamed, but the warning came too late.
Bam!
The four goblins behind him were paralyzed with fear as their eyes widened in shock. Their leader’s head spun through the air before falling to the ground with a loud thud.
His head rolled across the dirt while his body staggered forward, then backward, seemingly unable to understand that its owner was already dead before finally tripping over its own head and collapsing with a heavy thud.
The four remaining goblins stared at the sight in complete horror before slowly raising their eyes toward Ka’z, who stood before them with Ashin Grim balanced comfortably upon his shoulder. Before any of them could muster the courage to run, the rest of Ka’z’s group had already surrounded them from every direction.
The four goblins dropped their weapons almost simultaneously and immediately hugged each other, their bodies trembling so violently that their teeth were beginning to chatter.
Their faces were twisted with terror, and the sight was so pitiful that even some of Ka’z’s group hesitated. These were not warriors. They had come into the forest expecting to chase livestock, and instead they had walked directly into an enemy that had already killed their leader before they could even react.
Mi’ya looked at them for several moments before her expression softened with realization.
"Civilians..." Mi’ya muttered before looking up at Ka’z. "They sent out civilians."
Her voice carried disbelief because even after everything they had learned about Ashmork, she had not expected them to send ordinary goblins into the forest knowing that Ka’z’s group was out here.
Drak’s face turned cold as he looked at the four trembling goblins.
"Those sly bastards. They are preserving their real fighting force and sending civilians to their deaths." His voice was filled with contempt, but Gruk shook his head slightly as he studied the goblins.
"Maybe it’s because they don’t have many trained soldiers left?" Gruk asked, and everyone turned to stare at him, including Ka’z, who had begun considering the possibility himself.
Gruk’s reasoning made sense.
The Ashmork army had suffered catastrophic losses during the attack on Vaal’kor, and even after that, Ka’z had already killed a significant number of their warriors during his attacks on their farms and defenses.
"They lost a hundred and thirty coming to our home, so it does make sense they don’t have many trained warriors left." Ka’z rubbed his chin thoughtfully as he considered the situation, and several members of the group nodded.
The realization changed the way they viewed the hunting teams. It was entirely possible that Ashmork was not trying to sacrifice civilians deliberately. They might simply have no choice. With so few warriors left, Molu had probably been forced to rely on whoever was capable of carrying a weapon.
From Ka’z’s perspective, they were getting desperate.
Bigi and Bruk stepped forward, their massive bodies casting shadows over the small group of goblins as their steel maces rested comfortably upon their shoulders.
The two exchanged a brief glance before raising their weapons. The four goblins immediately screamed and squeezed each other even tighter, believing they were about to die.
Ka’z simply looked away. He had no intention of watching them beg for their lives, and there was no point in dragging out something that had already been decided.
Bam!
With one swing, the cries died down and the forest fell silent around them.
Ding!
[Hunting Squads: 1/10]
Ka’z stared at the notification briefly before dismissing it and turning his attention back toward the forest. One team had already been eliminated, but there were still nineteen more moving through the southern region.
If his earlier assumption was correct, then most of those teams would be composed of civilians as well, which meant they would be moving slower, making more noise and relying heavily on the experienced hunters among them. That also meant they would be easier to track.
"If they are sending civilians, they are probably sending a lot of them to make sure a few come back with something. We need to split up and cover more ground." Ka’z said, and the team nodded firmly.
Ka’z looked across the group before continuing, "So this is how it’s going to happen. I’ll go alone east and you guys split into two groups and go west. I expect everyone to be back here by nightfall and most importantly, stay safe. We are not losing anyone else to these goblins!"
"Understood!" Everyone chorused, and Ka’z nodded with a small smile.
He turned and began walking eastward before slowly crouching down. His legs sank into the soft earth as Blood Empowerment took effect once more, while the blood scattered around the corpses began flowing into his body.
Crimson streams seeped into his scales and vanished beneath them, causing his muscles to bulge as his already crimson eyes burned much brighter.
Ka’z felt the familiar surge of strength spread throughout his body as his blood magic replenished what he had spent moments earlier.
"Vael Ryn!!!"
Buzz!
Wind exploded from his feet as Ka’z shot eastward, his body becoming a blur before vanishing completely from their sight within seconds.
The sudden acceleration left several of the others staring in the direction he had disappeared, but Mi’ya’s gaze lingered longer than everyone else’s.
Her expression became slightly heavy as an old memory resurfaced. She remembered the night she had finally mustered enough courage to ask Ka’z for a dance, only for him to reject her so coldly that she had spent the rest of the night pretending it did not bother her. She knew he had not meant to hurt her, but remembering it still made her chest tighten slightly.
"Have you all noticed his scales are turning a bit red and even his hair has more red in them?" Thrak blurted out of nowhere, causing everyone to look at him as though he had suddenly lost his mind.
For a moment, nobody said anything. Then they stopped and actually looked toward the direction Ka’z had gone. Thrak was not imagining it. It was subtle, but there was definitely more red mixed into Ka’z’s golden hair than before, and the golden color of his scales seemed to permanently carry a faint crimson tint now.
Nobody could explain what it meant, however, and after everything they had already witnessed Ka’z doing, it was difficult to say whether it was something they should be worried about.
Bam!
Drak knocked him on the back of the head. "That doesn’t matter. Let’s group up and split up. There is no time to waste. Gruk and I will lead different teams, make a choice who to follow!"
Drak said as he rubbed the side of his head where he had struck Thrak, and immediately everyone began moving and picking sides.
The joking atmosphere disappeared as soon as they started organizing themselves, with Gruk taking one group while Drak gathered the other. They had a simple objective, find the hunting teams before they found the livestock and prevent as many as possible from returning to Ashmork.
Meanwhile, the scanty forest with its few scattered trees had turned into a blur around Ka’z as he repeatedly unleashed Wind Rush, covering a tremendous distance in a short span of time. His feet barely touched the ground before another burst of wind propelled him forward, and the terrain that would have taken an ordinary hunter hours to cross disappeared beneath him within minutes.
His Divine Perception remained active throughout the journey, allowing him to sense the faint cores of creatures and people hidden beyond his normal field of vision. Every few seconds his gaze shifted, searching for the presence of another hunting team.
Then his eyes flashed.
Another group of hunters was moving through the forest so Ka’z immediately changed direction.
"Lightning Cutter!"
"Vael Ryn!!!"
Buzz!
The axe in his hand was consumed by blue light as he launched himself toward the unsuspecting group. The goblins had no idea that something was approaching them at terrifying speed.
They were focused on following tracks through the forest, occasionally glancing toward the surrounding trees but never looking far enough to notice the blur rapidly closing the distance. By the time they finally sensed something was wrong, Ka’z had already blitzed past them.
His lightning cutter blade rested casually over his shoulder as he continued moving forward, his expression completely calm.
Behind him, five goblins had been split apart so cleanly that their upper halves were already rising into the air while their legs remained rooted to the ground. Their eyes were still filled with shock because none of them had even understood what had happened.
Thud!
The bodies fell heavily against the earth one after another, while Ka’z finally slowed to a stop and stood upright. He inhaled deeply and flexed his free hand, feeling the strength coursing through his body. He had spent almost the entire previous night absorbing aether, yet strangely, he did not feel tired at all despite everything he had done that night and still not sleeping. The discovery genuinely puzzled him.
"I spent all night absorbing aether and strangely I don’t feel tired at all even after all the hard work I put in last night. I wonder if cultivation can replace sleep permanently or if this is just a temporary thing before the accumulated fatigue fucks me up." Ka’z mumbled while flexing his free hand, genuinely curious about the limits of his newly improved cultivation.
Swoosh!
Something cut through the air.
Bam!
Ka’z’s hand moved almost instinctively, catching the arrow just before it could reach his left eye. The force behind the projectile made his fingers tighten around the shaft, and his gaze slowly shifted toward the direction from which it had come.
Three goblin hunters stood several meters away, their bows still raised and their expressions caught somewhere between fear and disbelief. They had clearly expected the arrow to kill him or at least injure him, only to watch him casually catch it with his bare hand.
Ka’z slowly lowered the arrow and looked at them. A cold smile tugged at the edges of his lips as a murderous gleam flashed in his eyes.
