Huff!
Ka’z leaned forward and exhaled loudly, causing a thick stream of steam to pour from his mouth and spread through the cold midnight air. His fingers tightened around the battle axe in his hand as crimson fumes continued to seep from between his scales, and for a brief moment, the goblins stationed upon the northern battlement could only stare at the strange figure standing beyond their walls.
The moonlight reflected off his golden scales, but the glow of his eyes was far more noticeable, burning like two crimson flames in the darkness. Nobody on the wall knew exactly what he intended to do, but every instinct they possessed told them that allowing him any closer would be a terrible mistake.
Move!
Booom!
Ka’z shot forward like a missile, his feet tearing into the earth beneath him as an explosive burst of strength sent his body racing toward the village. The archers on the wall paled the moment they saw his speed. What had looked like a distant figure only an instant ago was suddenly closing the distance at a frightening pace, forcing several of them to instinctively draw their bows tighter. Even Crow’s expression twisted with rare surprise as recognition finally struck him. The kobold he was staring at was none other than the same creature that had defeated Loki. He had heard Loki’s description repeatedly, but hearing about Ka’z and actually watching him move were two entirely different things.
Crow’s eyes shifted beyond Ka’z and into the darkness behind him, expecting an army to come charging through the forest alongside the kobold. Surely this kid did not plan on attacking Ashmork alone?
Yet he saw nothing. The darkness beyond Ka’z remained completely still, with no marching figures, no torches and no movement that suggested a hidden army was approaching. Crow waited for two seconds, then another, but no one appeared. His brows furrowed as he lowered his gaze back toward Ka’z.
’Is he really alone?’ Crow wondered as he watched the approaching figure.
He was afraid that the Vaal’kor forces were attempting to draw their attention toward Ka’z before launching a surprise attack from somewhere else, and launching a suprise attack could leave the them vulnerable.
But regardless of what the enemy’s intentions were, he had no choice but to focus on the immediate threat. According to the reports Loki had given him, Ka’z possessed an exceptionally strong affinity with the blood element and became an absolute monster in close quarters. Loki had emphasized that allowing the kobold to get close was one of the greatest mistakes a warrior could make. Crow had no intention of making the same mistake.
"Fire!" Crow cried out, and the first wave of arrows was immediately unleashed.
Swoosh!
The arrows filled the air as they flew toward Ka’z, their sharp whistling sounds cutting through the darkness.
Several goblins instinctively held their breath as they watched the volley approach, hoping that sheer numbers would be enough to slow the charging kobold. Ka’z, however, did not even slow down. His hand reached behind his back and grabbed the wrapped weapon strapped there, pulling it free as he poured his mana into it. The cloth covering the weapon immediately began to tremble before bursting apart, revealing the familiar weapon beneath as blue lightning surged violently around its blade.
Haaaaaa!
Ka’z swung and Ashin Grim tore through the air with such force that the lightning surrounding it exploded outward. The incoming arrows were caught within the attack and burst apart almost simultaneously, their shafts and arrowheads scattering into fragments before they could reach him.
Several goblins on the battlement stared in shock at the sight, their expressions twisting with fear as they realized that the entire first volley had accomplished absolutely nothing.
"Again!" One of the archers shouted as they hurriedly reached for another arrow.
The goblins immediately began knocking their next arrows, refusing to let the sight of their first attack failing break their formation. They knew every second they wasted was another opportunity for the monster below to get closer, and the distance between Ka’z and the walls was already shrinking rapidly. But before they could unleash the second wave, Ka’z’s figure suddenly vanished from sight.
"Umbra Vel’kar!"
The shadows clung tightly to Ka’z’s figure as his body moved through the darkness, allowing him to disappear from the enemy’s vision without warning. The goblins released their arrows anyway, hoping that the sheer number of projectiles would catch him even if they could no longer see him.
Swoosh!
The arrows tore through the empty space where Ka’z had been standing moments earlier and struck the ground harmlessly. Several goblins stared downward in confusion before quickly looking around the surrounding area.
"What?"
"Where is he?"
Confusion tore across the ten archers on the battlement as they searched desperately for their target. Their eyes moved from one patch of darkness to another, but there was no sign of the kobold. The realization that he had disappeared without making a sound only made the situation worse. They could no longer determine where he was, yet they knew he was still somewhere nearby.
Swoosh!
Five arrows suddenly shot out from the darkness.
The goblins barely had time to react. The projectiles flew across the battlefield, whistling past several of the archers, but two found their targets. One arrow struck directly into a goblin’s eye while another buried itself in the throat of a second. Both gurgled and gasped as they staggered backward, their hands desperately reaching for the arrows before their bodies toppled over the edge of the battlement.
Thud!
The sight stunned the remaining goblins.
"They have archers!" One goblin screamed as he hurriedly nocked another arrow and aimed toward the distant shadows. His eyes darted across the battlefield in search of the hidden archers but he noticed Ka’z’s figure instead, now much closer to the battlement than before. The goblin’s heart nearly stopped as he quickly adjusted his aim toward the kobold, only for Ka’z’s body to become shrouded by darkness again.
He vanished.
"Wwwhhheree??!!!" The goblin screamed, his hands trembling around the bow as panic began consuming him. He looked left, then right, desperately searching for the creature that had disappeared in front of his eyes.
Swish!
An arrow shot straight into his mouth.
The projectile pierced through the back of his head with enough force to drag his body backward and off the battlement. The remaining archers immediately ducked beneath the protection of the wall, no longer willing to expose themselves to the unseen marksmen.
Crow’s face twisted into a deadly frown as he looked at the situation. Three of their people had already been killed during the brief exchange, and Ka’z was getting dangerously close.
"Get off the battlement, form the shield wall. We will defend the gates!" Crow decided in a heartbeat upon seeing how close Ka’z had gotten.
With the aid of those hidden marksmen, they had almost no chance of safely taking him down from the walls. Worse, the longer they remained exposed, the more people would die before Ka’z even reached the gate. The only reasonable choice was to pull everyone down and force the kobold into close combat where they could overwhelm him with numbers.
While Loki warned against this, this was the only possible path for him.
Without hesitation, the remaining goblins began jumping from the battlement, eager to escape the horrors of the kobold and his hidden team. Crow remained behind for a moment longer, alternating his gaze between Ka’z and the kobolds positioned farther away in the darkness. His suspicion about the enemy’s formation had only grown stronger. Loki had said that the others had attacked from a distance while Ka’z had focused on close combat, and now Crow was seeing the same pattern. It was becoming a clear and repeated tactic.
The main problem remained Ka’z. He was the real threat.
Crow narrowed his eyes as he watched the crimson figure approaching.
’It’s just like when Loki fought them. He also said the rest attacked from a distance. Seeing that it’s a recurring pattern, it’s safe to say he is the muscle of the group.’
His fingers tightened around his weapons.
’Cut him down and the rest will follow.’
Swish!
Crow tilted his head to the left, narrowly dodging an arrow aimed directly at his face. The projectile passed beside his cheek and disappeared behind him, yet his expression barely changed. There was no panic in his eyes, only the same dull focus that had remained on his face throughout the battle. He turned his attention back toward Ka’z before jumping from the battlement and landing heavily on the ground below.
Crow immediately saw the first set of reserves approaching. Twenty warriors were already moving toward the northern gate, weapons in hand and expressions tense as they prepared to face the enemy.
"Create a five man shield wall in front of the gates. Just create some distance so it doesn’t crush you when it falls." Crow directed as he pointed toward the entrance.
The warriors immediately began moving into position, raising their shields while their spearmen gathered behind them.
"Two five man teams should be positioned beside the gates to block and restrict his left and right movements, and then the archers at the back." He continued, quickly organizing the battlefield before Ka’z could reach them.
The warriors moved with surprising efficiency, each understanding that they could not afford confusion when facing an opponent capable of moving as quickly as Ka’z.
Once the formation began taking shape, Crow walked to the front of the defensive line and stood directly before the gate. He removed the wolf coat draped over his shoulder and tossed it aside before pulling out two short axes. He lowered his body and assumed a fighting stance, his feet planted firmly against the earth as he stared at the wooden gate before him.
All that was left to do now was wait. Thankfully, Ka’z did not leave them waiting for long.
Bang!
The wooden gate hinges exploded, shooting forward toward Crow and the shield wall behind him, and his face twisted into an ugly frown. The enormous door came crashing toward them with enough force to crush several people beneath its weight, but Crow did not retreat. He leaned forward, stamping his legs into the ground as his muscles bulged. With a roar, he swung both axes violently.
The blades tore through the wooden gate.
The massive door was cut apart before it could reach the defensive formation, and Crow immediately thrust his hands in opposite directions, using his strength to send the broken sections of the gate hurling toward two different corners of the battlefield.
The pieces crashed down with loud bangs, but nobody paid attention to them. Every eye was fixed upon the figure standing beyond the destroyed entrance.
Ka’z stood in the opening with his chest heaving up and down, red steam pouring from his mouth and crimson fumes still rolling from his body. His cold golden gaze remained fixed upon Crow. He had never met this goblin before, and yet he could not help but recognize the man’s Mana Burst.
Loki had flaunted the technique during their battle, so it was impossible for him not to recognize it. The fact that another goblin possessed such explosive physical strength immediately caught Ka’z’s attention, but that was not even the most concerning thing about the warrior standing before him.
His eyes slowly traveled over Crow’s body. Runes were carved across the goblin’s body and weapons.
Ka’z’s expression became more serious as he studied them. The sight made him feel as though he were standing before a goblin shaman as skilled as Varg while simultaneously facing a warrior as physically powerful as Loki. It was an unusual combination, and Ka’z immediately understood that this opponent was probably far more dangerous than the average Ashmork warrior.
His gaze shifted toward the sides.
The shield wall stood ready, spears protruding through the gaps between the shields and aimed directly toward him. More warriors had positioned themselves around the entrance, deliberately leaving enough space for the front formation to fight without getting in each other’s way. Behind them stood the archers, their bows already prepared. Ka’z’s eyes narrowed slightly as he took in the formation.
They had prepared for him.
Ka’z tightened his grip around Ashin Grim as the faint crackle of lightning began traveling across its edge. Crow noticed the movement immediately, but he did not retreat. Instead, the goblin stretched both hands out in opposite directions, his two short axes held firmly in his palms as his gaze remained locked onto Ka’z.
"Welcome to Ashmork Village." Crow said in a cold voice.
The words had barely left his mouth when a tremendous battle cry erupted from the goblins behind him, shaking the atmosphere itself as dozens of voices joined together with the confidence of warriors defending the last thing they had left.
