"FLANK HER! FLANK HER!" a second Juggernaut bellowed.
Whatever arrogance the Vanguard strike team had left evaporated into the toxic air.
They had believed they were fighting a broken, traumatized support unitβa former Paladin whose mind had been shattered and whose divine power had been corrupted beyond repair.
They had been catastrophically wrong.
They had walked straight into the jaws of an apex predator.
Two Juggernauts broke formation simultaneously.
Their nine-foot frames accelerated with startling speed, reinforced boots crushing the cracked station floor as they moved to either side of Seraphina.
One swept toward her left flank while the other circled wide around her right, exploiting the blind spots created by the greatsword still buried in the corpse at her feet.
The left-flanking Juggernaut raised his rotary cannon and leveled its glowing barrels at her chest.
The weapon's internal mana-core screamed as it charged, drawing enough power for a point-blank execution burst.
Seraphina couldn't dodge.
Her greatsword remained buried deep inside the first Juggernaut's ruined chest, its blazing edge wedged between shattered armor and molten flesh.
The Juggernaut saw the opening.
A cruel grin spread beneath his reinforced visor as his armored finger tightened around the trigger.
The cannon discharged.
"SHHHH-THOOOM!"
The sound was too deep to be called a gunshot. For one violent instant, it seemed as though the air itself had been punched out of existence.
Three miles away, Kaelen Cross stood motionless on the freezing rooftop of the Zenith Tower.
The wind tore at his black coat and silver hair, but the Panopticon remained perfectly steady against his shoulder.
Its smart-scope had already finished calculating.
It wasn't tracking where the Juggernaut was.
It was calculating where he would be when the shot arrived.
Distance, wind pressure, atmospheric density, structural obstructions, target velocity, and even the microscopic fluctuations within the round's mana-core were processed simultaneously. Every variable collapsed into a single predicted destination.
The Panopticon did not calculate a conventional ballistic trajectory.
It calculated where the projectile needed to arrive, then constructed a route capable of reaching that point.
The ammunition inside the chamber was designed for exactly that purpose.
A condensed void-core surrounded its physical center, allowing the dark-matter round to obey the Panopticon's spatial authority rather than remain completely bound by conventional motion.
Kael pulled the trigger.
The sniper rifle bucked once.
The dark-matter round erupted from the barrel, compressing the freezing air around it into a violent shockwave as it tore toward Sakura Station.
For a fraction of a second, it followed a conventional trajectory.
Then the Panopticon took control.
The void-core forced the projectile onto the route it had calculated, and the round snapped ninety degrees to the left without surrendering its momentum.
There was no gradual curve. No visible mechanism. No physical turn.
The projectile simply abandoned the path ordinary physics demanded and occupied the path the Panopticon had chosen.
The Juggernaut never saw it.
The dark-matter round struck the side of his right knee.
"SQUELCH!"
The ten-million-dollar siege plating held for less than a heartbeat before the void-core tore through it. The reinforced joint vanished, followed by everything below the knee, which erupted into a spray of blood, armor fragments, and vaporized flesh.
"GAAAAAAHHHHH!"
The Juggernaut's scream ripped through the station as the sudden loss of his leg sent his enormous frame violently off balance.
The round's remaining force tore through his armor and hurled him backward. His nine-foot body flipped completely upside down before crashing into the concrete hard enough to fracture the floor beneath him.
His rotary cannon discharged during the fall, a wild burst of red plasma tearing into the ceiling instead of Seraphina.
She didn't flinch.
She didn't even look toward the smoking hole above her.
She already knew the shot had landed exactly where Kael intended.
Her trust in him wasn't blind.
It had been earned.
Seraphina ripped her blazing greatsword free from the first Juggernaut's ruined chest and pivoted on her heel. The flaming blade came around with the momentum of her entire body.
The wounded Juggernaut barely raised his arms before the corrupted greatsword crashed across his neck.

"SCHWING!"
The enchanted helmet split beneath the burning edge.
The blade continued through the armor, the reinforced neck plating, and the flesh beneath it without losing momentum.
His armored head separated cleanly from his shoulders and struck the concrete with a heavy thud. It rolled across the cracked platform tiles, leaving a steaming trail of corrupted blood behind it.

"DON'T GIVE HER AN OPENING! FIRE AT WILL!" the remaining eight Juggernauts roared.
Whatever confidence they had left collapsed completely.
They raised their rotary cannons and unleashed everything they had.
The underground concourse vanished beneath a torrential storm of red plasma. Hundreds of blazing projectiles ripped through the darkness, turning the station into a furnace of heat, light, and pulverized concrete. Every impact blasted chunks of tile and masonry across the platform.
"AEGIS!"
Seraphina slammed her free hand against the cracked floor.
Her corrupted golden aura detonated outward.
A massive hard-light barrier erupted in front of her, forming a shimmering dome of golden energy threaded with violent black veins.
The corruption didn't weaken the holy light. It gave the barrier a vicious, predatory quality.
The first wave of plasma struck.
The station shook.
Ripples raced across the Aegis barrier with every impact as fractures of golden light spread through its surface.
Seraphina gritted her teeth and dug her boots into the shattered floor, but the sustained barrage still forced her backward.
She couldn't advance.
The eight Juggernauts had created a wall of fire too dense for even her corrupted aura to break through.
Three miles away, Kael watched the battlefield through the Panopticon's glowing scope.
The targeting runes shifted across his vision.
"They're clustered," he said through the comms.
Nyx's frantic breathing was audible beneath the roar of plasma.
Kael remained unnervingly calm.
"Drop the shield when I tell you."
Seraphina's arms began to tremble.
Aegis was devouring her mana faster than she could replenish it.
Corrupted energy crawled through her veins like molten glass, burning her from within as she struggled to keep the barrier intact.
"How long?" she asked through clenched teeth.
"Long enough."
Kael adjusted the Panopticon.
Its targeting array abandoned the Juggernauts and mapped the structure behind them.
The ruined section of Sakura Station unfolded inside his scope as a three-dimensional lattice of data: concrete density, reinforcement placement, structural stress, impact angles, and every surface capable of redirecting the round.
His gaze settled on a massive load-bearing pillar directly behind the Vanguard formation.
Kael didn't need to shoot the Juggernauts.
He only needed to give the Panopticon something to shoot through.
"Now, Sera."
Seraphina released Aegis.
The massive barrier vanished.
For one horrifying instant, nothing stood between her and the incoming storm.
The Juggernauts fired.
A wall of red plasma surged toward her.
At that exact moment, Kael pulled the trigger.
"SHHHH-THOOOM!"
The dark-matter round tore through the smoking opening above Sakura Station and plunged into the battlefield.
This time, Kael didn't designate a Juggernaut as its destination.
He designated the space behind them.
The Panopticon calculated the route through the battlefield and locked the reinforced concrete pillar into the projectile's path as its first spatial anchor.
The round struck.
"CRACK!"
Instead of losing momentum against the concrete, the void-core activated.
The projectile disappeared into the pillar for a fraction of a second before emerging from the opposite side at an impossible angle.
It tore through the rear armor of the first Juggernaut and shattered his knee.
Before the giant could even collapse, the Panopticon recalculated.
The round struck reinforced steel beneath the tracks and redirected upward.
It punched through the armored groin of a second Juggernaut.
The projectile continued without slowing.
It rebounded from a rusted train car, changed direction again, and drove straight through the helmet of a third.
"SQUELCH! SPLAT! CRUNCH!"
Three targets.
Three impossible angles.
One bullet.
The three Vanguard elites collapsed almost simultaneously, their armor rupturing as the void-core round continued through the battlefield.
The remaining Juggernauts froze.
Their firing formation had disintegrated so quickly that none of them understood what they had witnessed.
The rotary cannons fell silent.
Only the screams of the dying remained.
"HOW?!" one of the Juggernauts screamed.
"WHERE IS HE?!"
The others immediately began scanning the station.
Their targeting systems swept across the ruined trains, the tunnels, the shattered ceiling, and every dark corner where a sniper might have been hiding.
They searched for a muzzle flash.
They searched for movement.
They searched for anything that could explain the slaughter.
There was nothing.
Their enemy wasn't in the subway.
He was three miles away.
They were searching the darkness for a sniper who had already fired his shot.
Seraphina gave them no time to recover.
The instant their formation broke, she launched herself forward.
She crossed the distance before the nearest Juggernaut could raise his weapon.
He swung his massive gravity hammer downward.
Seraphina dropped beneath the attack as the weapon tore through the air above her head.
Her greatsword rose from beneath his guard.
The corrupted blade punched through the armored gap beneath his waist and continued upward.
The Juggernaut staggered.
Seraphina drove the blade deeper, tearing through his abdomen and chest as corrupted golden flames spread through the interior of his armor.
She kept pushing until the burning tip erupted through his collarbone.
The giant released a strangled gasp.
Then the corrupted flames consumed him from within.
"FOUR LEFT!" Nyx screamed over the comms, her voice exploding with excitement from inside the safe room.
"TEAR THEM APART, SERA!"
The remaining four Juggernauts abandoned their empty rotary cannons and drew their massive vibro-blades.
The weapons came alive with a violent electrical hum, their vibrating edges whining through the air.
Whatever remained of their military discipline had vanished.
They were no longer fighting like an elite strike team.
They were fighting like cornered beasts.
The four giants surrounded Seraphina and attacked simultaneously.
Their blades crashed against hers from every direction, filling the ruined station with blinding sparks.
Seraphina moved through the storm with terrifying precision.
She parried one strike, redirected another, caught a third against the flat of her greatsword, then twisted away from the fourth before the next blade could reach her.
But the Juggernauts possessed an overwhelming advantage in raw strength.
Each weighed nearly a ton, and every swing carried enough mechanical force to shatter concrete.
For several seconds, Seraphina held them all at bay.
Then one blade slipped through.
The vibrating edge carved a shallow, burning line across her bicep.
Seraphina hissed as blood immediately ran down her arm.
The Juggernaut saw the wound.
Behind his reinforced visor, he grinned.
He had finally found the opening he needed.
He stepped forward and raised his massive vibro-blade above his head.
The weapon screamed as its energized edge gathered momentum.
He brought it down with enough force to split Seraphina's skull in two.
